🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The Snailaversary and Winter is Coming, Luckily, we're Part Sheep 🐑

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

Talking of mirrors (I'm a bit behind), I've been rather shocked by the vastly better light levels in new house, compared to conservation-grade gloom of old one....not sure how much of my currently rather battered looking skin is from the stress of moving or just cos I can actually see it better. Eek!!

Ollivander84 · 19/10/2017 11:04

All beauty website has loads of new stuff on and Christmas gifts. Not that I'm wasting time browsing. Obviously Blush

Turns out my DDad drilled into metal not wood any way I now have pictures. When it's turned on it's very bright unlike the rather deceptive photo

That's lovely Tant my dear dad made me one when I was a teenager, they always remind me of him.

Ollivander84 · 19/10/2017 18:40

My dad has been fixing my wardrobe while muttering "it won't hold all the dresses in the world you know" Blush
The conversation went
"My wardrobe collapsed"
"And exactly how many dresses were hanging in it?"
He knows me SO well Grin

Apparently 70 dresses requires brackets, screws and gorilla glue for good measure

EnidButton · 19/10/2017 21:53

I want need more dresses! I'll buy gorilla glue first. Grin

Tant That's so good! Looks really professional.

I only own 4 dresses, thanks to my flat chest and parsnip legs I can rarely find any that fit me and I never feel comfortable in them.

Love the lights Tant they do look very Hollywood dressing room!

My FAB stuff has arrived and been tested. I really like the cleanser, very creamy but rinses off well, no film. I’m a bit wary of the ultra repair moisturiser as it’s very rich but sinks in quickly and doesn’t leave me looking oily so hoping it won’t cause breakouts. Both do have a scent (albeit mild) so I can’t see them being great for anyone who is very sensitive to fragrance.

botemp · 20/10/2017 10:57

Is it a masking fragrance, user? I thought I didn't see any fragrance in the INCIs but then was only doing a quick glance.

I saw on my search for the IKEA led panels that they have those strip bulb lights with led bulbs there too now. I wonder what those are like in terms of lightning as I remember the old fashioned wire bulbs were very flattering but you can't get those anymore.

70 dresses Shock Olli, how many times a day do you switch out clothing or more likely, how long can you go without doing laundry?

Btw, the mirror you bought isn't magnifying, right? I'm thinking I'd actually prefer a magnifying one and might just get the 'cheaper' simple human one. There seems to be a new one that mimics different types of light with an app, do those who have the older model have that function too or is it just one setting?

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 20/10/2017 11:11

I wear dresses a lot Grin in my defence a lot of them are for shoots only and so I need lots!
And no, it's just lit up, not magnifying

MustBeThin · 20/10/2017 12:14

I just have this one! It just turns on and off when you stick your face in front/move away. So one setting. You can on obviously use it without the light too if you turn it off by the button. Its height adjustable too, some reviews say it isn't but it Is, it's just stiff the first time you do it and obviously people haven't worked out how to do it.

I'd hate to see my face x10 zoomed, x5 is bad enough. 😂😂 I don't think x10 is necessary really though, I have no problems seeing stray eyebrows that need plucking even without my reading glasses on.

JDSTER · 20/10/2017 16:23

I had a good day shopping in London yesterday. I got into & other stories, Arket Anthropologie and Cos - none of which are stores we have at home. Lots of nice things in Cos. I got a top and trousers. I also found a nice bra in Selfridges, I can't remember the make off hand but it fits well, is comfortable and gives me a good shape. I always find bras difficult to buy. £55 though Shock. I also got biologique recherge. They recommended the P50W (as I thought). Bo what's the best way to incorporate this into my routine? They advised no other acids or retinoids to which I nodded in full agreement but does it mean I can never use retinoids again Confused? Am I ok to use Vit C in the morning? All advice appreciated

EnidButton · 20/10/2017 17:00

I have the mother of all colds. I feel like I have flu all the time anyway so the fact I can tell I have a cold means it's a big 'un.

I got a sample of sleepy lotion from Lush and the sales person scooped it from a tub that had been open and used in a very busy shopping centre. Can you catch a cold sharing a pot of cream? 🤔 It could be from anywhere tbh but it got me thinking.

Sleepy lotion is very nice btw. Sweet and spicy and kind of comforting. Not that I can smell it atm. Grin

Glad you had a good day JD. Share the bra name if you remember it please, I'm on a bra hunt permanently.

Ollivander84 · 20/10/2017 17:52

I've just bought some this works deep sleep spray to try... hoping it does work!

userallusedup · 20/10/2017 19:00

Bo I’ve just had another sniff at the FAB stuff, I’m not sure if it’s a masking fragrance or not but they have a mild slightly medicinal/clinical scent - nothing like as strong as the fragrance in the likes of Decleor, Emma Hardy, Elemis etc but they do have a smell in the way that my Eucerin and LRP stuff doesn’t. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it smells of though Confused The moisturiser contains eucalyptus (pretty far down the list) so could be a faint whiff of that I’m getting. It doesn’t last though, once rubbed in I can’t smell it on my face at all.

Sounds like a great shopping trip JDSTER

Hope you feel better soon Enid Flowers not sure if you can catch a cold from cream, I’m guessing if someone else with a cold had put their fingers in it or coughed or sneezed near it then maybe yes.

botemp · 20/10/2017 20:44

Flowers Enid, you're just going to have to pretend they smell amazing. That open jar policy is the sole reason I've never bought anything from Lush but they do use parabens in everything which are pretty germ and fungal resistant unlike most other preservatives. I do doubt the germs that cause colds would survive that long though.

That This Works deep sleep does really work provided it's not full on insomnia, Olli. I wish sleep was the issue with me, I've been having nightmares for about a week now and waking really early as a result. Will be away this weekend so hopefully a different environment will give some respite.

How was Arket JDSTER? The one in Brussels opened recently so I've been meaning to plan a trip ever since but the rest of Brussels really isn't all that exciting. The bra brand wasn't Simone Perele by any chance, I like them but they're the only bra brand that seems to fit me well and annoyingly I really need to size down a band now and they just don't do it, I have no idea anymore where to look. Chantelle is sometimes okay but not reliable and they don't do 28 backs either, most European brands don't seem to unless it's an A cup Angry

P50w just start with it diluted on a damp cotton pad twice a week, then build up gradually to 3x a week undiluted, or as needed. Vit C should be fine, retinoids too, it's predominantly prescription topicals that should avoid being used alongside it, just not in the same routine but you're already aware of that, I'm sure.

Thin, I actually quite like a 10x for doing a kitten flick because I'm shit at it, you end up with more delicate lines which suit me best as there isn't much visible lid space, but no, not really essential I suppose.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 20/10/2017 23:28

Thank you for the Flowers SmileI'll keep using the cream, I've got the cold now anyway. Hot water with half a lemon squeezed in it does wonders for sinuses btw if anyone else finds themselves with a cold. Terrible for teeth but at least I can breathe!

I have that spray Olli and the sleep balm. I prefer the balm out of the two. Interested to hear what you think of the spray. Fingers crossed.

bo Sorry you're having bad dreams. I've had that in the past after taking paracetamol just before bed or if I'm too hot. Presumably you've thought of things like that though. I hope it stops soon. Flowers

EnidButton · 22/10/2017 01:17

Actually, just seen the time you posted. Bet I'm too late and you've already bought it. Grin

JDSTER · 22/10/2017 10:20

Hope you're feeling better Enid. The bra I bought is maisonlejaby, a French brand. The style is called elixir. I got it in nude. I haven't worn it yet but i have high hopes I've found a new brand I like and is comfortable. I bought a new bra in John Lewis recently which is definitely the right size (based on all that bra intervention stuff) and I was checked by assistant but I want to rip it off after wearing it for an hour or so, it's so uncomfortable!
Bo thanks for advice on P50. I'll try it tonight for the first time. I hope you enjoy your weekend away. Arket had some nice stuff in but not really my style. There were a couple of jumpers I liked but too similar to what I've got.
olli I love dresses. Where do you tend to buy from or is there a particular style you like?

Ollivander84 · 22/10/2017 10:22

It's this one I like. Not too sure what shoes to go with it through the day. And in black
