Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

It's the extra pressure Bagel it makes everything seem like a bigger deal than it might do usually. Flowers I downloaded an app called Calm earlier, you have to pay for a lot of the content but it has some nice soothing background sounds on it, like raindrops, the sea, birds tweeting etc. Also some soothing audio stories. It's quite nice. Sorry you've had a stressful day. It isn't fair how it often falls to one person (usually the woman lets be honest) to do all the mental carrying of organising and planning. No wonder you got fangry. I hope tomorrow and Christmas Day is happier for you. Wine

Tantpoke · 24/12/2017 03:06

My poor DM had my DD10 calling her the other week to ask if we could have Christmas at theirs again Xmas Hmm and I quote 'because mummy is always so tired after work I don't want her to fall asleep and forget to cook on Christmas Day' Xmas Blush

And I am very grateful to them both esp as I've been ill the last couple of weeks and really would have been too exhausted to host Christmas.

Tantpoke · 24/12/2017 03:09

bagel it is so stressful this time of year esp managing other peoples expectations.

Do what I did this morning and have a long browse on the internet (lock yourself in the loo if you have to) and order some lovely pieces of jewellery for yourself as treat once you get through the ordeal of it all Xmas Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 24/12/2017 16:00

Thank you all. Bit calmer today and have finished hoovering, DD finished icing the biscuits. Made the crumble and bought some profiteroles instead of making a cake, as we already have mince pies etc. Sorry for derailing the thread!

It's been so interesting to read about your skincare likes and dislikes - and I've learnt a lot. Best wishes for 2018 Grin

userallusedup · 24/12/2017 20:01

I always feel a bit guilty at Christmas as I do so little for/about it Blush it’s mainly just a nice break from work interspersed with a few nights out for me.

I hope everyone manages to have a lovely (and hopefully stress free) day tomorrow Xmas Smile

Has anyone asked Santa for skin care or makeup??

EnidButton · 24/12/2017 21:30

I strongly hinted towards the Bobbi Broen counter in Selfridges. Grin DH is very good at gifts so you never know.

I've taken to my bed as I feel ill. Same old same old but felt awkward af excusing myself at 9pm to our houseguest.

Tantpoke · 25/12/2017 02:24

I haven't asked for any this year. I am currently very irritated and awake due to son coming into my room and promptly knocking water onto my MacBook which is now currently lying upside down on a towel covered cushion Xmas Angry fangry

EnidButton · 25/12/2017 02:59

Noooo! Xmas Shock Hopefully you grabbed it in time.

I'm awake because I'm worried I'll not get enough sleep. 🤔 Ridiculous.

mintmagnummm · 25/12/2017 06:27

Merry Christmas 🎄 xx

botemp · 25/12/2017 14:47

Merry Christmas everyone, hope all the ups an downs are long forgotten and I no longer need to be 'fangry' on anyone's behalf, just a bit 'fenvy' surely Rihanna will have a green lipstick named just that coming out soon of all your gifts [santa]

Merry Christmas you lovely lovely people. 🎄💗 This is my favourite corner of MN. Flowers

I've hidden upstairs for a bit. Trying on my new lippy. It's a cheery brightish red. Bobbi Brown Cherry.

I have an Elemis frangipani salt scrub to try tomorrow. Love the smell of it. The oil is a fave.

userallusedup · 25/12/2017 18:36

Merry Christmas everyone 🎄🎉🍾 I love our little corner of Mumsnet too ❤️

No presents here apart from consumables as we decided we all have too much ‘stuff’ - especially me Blush - so we don’t exchange. Had a nice relaxing (very lazy!) day though.

Tantpoke · 25/12/2017 19:01

Merry Christmas 🎄 🍾🥂 you lovely beauties, ''tis indeed a cherished corner 💓 of MN

I got a Caudalie cracker with 3 small bits in it and some loccitaine body lotion. I keep disappearing to the guest room for naps. I think my laptop will be fine, yay.

JDSTER · 25/12/2017 21:25

Merry Christmas from me too. Thanks to you all for your support, exchanging of ideas, expertise and general musings WineFlowers.

I got gift vouchers from DH for lovely beauty salon I go to so I’ll treat myself to a facial in the new year, which I haven’t done for ages.

Also got a jo malone candle, various lip balms and the eucerin moisturiser you recommended (poor DH checking the aisles of Boots for the exact one Grin)

Off to watch ‘call the midwife’ now the kids are in bed Xmas Smile

cad186 · 25/12/2017 23:23

Merry Christmas everyone!

Ollivander84 · 25/12/2017 23:49

Merry Christmas! I got a makeup organised which is fab
My present to myself I have just ordered Blush hourglass powder in ethereal light and hourglass blush in ethereal glow

BagelGoesWalking · 26/12/2017 10:32

All went v well! Potatoes weren't quite as crispy as desired as so much in the oven but all delicious.

I got a lovely body scrub from &Other Stories from DD, bought myself the Nuxe lip balms in a pot, some Almond, Milk and Honey Shower Gel from the Body Shop. Two lovely books (DS) and also bought myself a lovely plaid scarf from eBay (following inspiration on Mamansnet Advent thread Grin). Huge box of chocs and Silent Pool gin from DB.

Gave DS's girlfriend Nixe Huile Prodigieuse among other things. I had bought in France in the summer and hadn't opened, was a bit stuck on things for her, and probably wouldn't have used it as I've got a few oils from the Ordinary, I hope she likes it!

botemp · 26/12/2017 10:39

Oh dear, when the language pedants do some forensic research years from now on how plaid got its bastardised meaning in the UK, they'll come and blame me and the calendar for that Xmas Shock

Merry belated Christmas to us all! Another thank you for all the advice and general camaraderie... I got massively stressed out by all the madness surrounding Xmas this year. We've already reduced gift-giving this year but I think next time it will be really paired back - it does my head in.

However, I'm very grateful for the Lush shower gel and Ultrabland DD got me (with DHs help :))

Olli so glad you like the Stila - I hate products going to waste! Love my Hourglass blush (Mood exposure) - they are beautiful, enjoy!

And thank you JDSTER for the Call the Midwife reminder - we spent yesterday with my husband's large Jewish family (more of a Chrismukkah really!) and didn't watch TV so will be catching up on favourites over the next couple of days...

EnidButton · 26/12/2017 19:01

I'm guest free now! So I'm going to have a long bath with some Elemis bits I got, a film and some chocolate truffles. So lovely opening fresh products. It makes a bath feel more indulgent somehow and I am all about indulgence atm. There's also a bag of something called unicorn bath dust which looks pink and edible and has chunks of glitter in it, most definitely not suitable for this thread but looks fun!

Have a new bottle of Coco Mademoiselle which I'm pleased about as I'm sure my bottle, although a third full still, has turned a bit. I smell a lot of metallic alcohol in it now. Will keep this one in the box to see if keeping the light off prevents that. DH also got me a much longed for kitchen aid! Planning lots of baking for this next week. Finally my Kitchenaid ideas Pinterest board can actually be of use. Xmas Blush

Was it on this board we were fancying the unicorn and mermaid brushes? Look what I got! Grin It's huge and ridiculous! Love it.

So relieved to be able to relax and get the pjs on that I forgot to say I hope you all have had a good couple of days and it all went well and your fridge has lovely leftovers in it.

🍗🧀💗🎄

botemp · 26/12/2017 21:01

Yes, yes it was this thread where you all continued to torture me with pictures of mermaid brushes. And I horrified you, Enid, by fessing up that my KitchenAid mostly stands idle gathering dust. What are you planning on cooking with it? I used to use it for bread doughs but I've totally converted to the Magimix for that (miraculously good and super quick). Might make some savoury biscuits and gougères for New Year's which really don't require the KitchenAid but at least it gets used.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 27/12/2017 14:15

Cakes and biscuits mainly bo I do a lot of baking but not as much recent because my arms get tired and achy too quickly. (For example, my right arm is agony today because I threw some bread to the ducks yesterday Hmm ffs) Always wanted one. Really looking forward to getting all the baking books out.

botemp · 27/12/2017 20:29

You'll get a lot of use out of it then, Enid. I usually don't bother with setting it up for the things I can easily do by hand (which is most of the time), the low speed perfectly mimics a nice hand stir. Also, should be good since you're avoiding wheat altogether now, right? I have a baking book that I quite like, 'Good to the Grain' by Kim Boyce, it's all about baking with whole grains, focusing on all the different varieties with lots of interesting recipes.

Since we're nearing the end of the month, and year, I'm thinking should we alter the empties posts slightly and include our favourite finds/discoveries/gamechangers of 2017 as well?

enid I was looking at Kitchenaids in the JL sale, there's one thats a slightly older model soon to be made redundant which I very nearly bought, but hesitated and bought jewellery instead from elsewhwere Grin I'll be interested to know if it revolutionises your cooking
