🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The Snailaversary and Winter is Coming, Luckily, we're Part Sheep 🐑

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

Hmmmm is the answer to that! I'm appealing the decision

botemp · 18/11/2017 22:32

CakeBrewChocolateGin and in that order then. Sounds very frustrating, sorry to hear you're going through that.

Oh no Olli Sad I am sorry. Fuckers.

Mint You’ll be a happy, excited and loved up bride that’s all that matters.

I keep seeing lots of similar nicknames on MN and hoping people don’t get us mixed up so think I might have to name change soon. We’ll see.

Have horrendous foot pain atm so I’m frowning like heck and thinking it’s a good job I never had Botox as screwing your face up really seems to help. 😖

mintmagnummm · 19/11/2017 07:02

Aww thanks bo and Enid. It’s not the getting married that’s making me all excited (don’t get me wrong I’m very happy and looking forward to it) I’ve been with my fiancé coming up for 12 years and been engaged almost 9 years 😂. The wedding date was actually set about a year ago now so it’s not a new thing. I’m just excited about bloody skincare and products lol and it’s nearly Christmas so feeling festive, my son is almost 6 now so is at that very excitable age about it being nearly time for Santa 😊

mintmagnummm · 19/11/2017 07:03

Oh and olli I’m sorry to hear about your job loss 💐

BagelGoesWalking · 19/11/2017 09:52

Ollivander I’m sorry for the bad news, hopefully you’ll get a redundancy package to tide you over?

Well, I tried the Scinic All in One Ampoulee* yesterday. My skin’s been feeling very unsettled and irritated recently. The skin above my lips is particularly rough, looks red and dry all the time, and another rough not just under my chin, even though I’ve been slathering on a rich emollient multiple times (it’s something I’ve had for years).

Tried some of the Ampoule on my forehead, then cheek, then put on all over my face before going to bed. To my immense surprise, my skin feels soft and just a whole lot calmer and less irritated, even on the worst bits! I’m so used to things not really working, I’m a bit gobsmacked. Looking forward to seeing what happens if I continue to use over a longer period of time.

botemp · 19/11/2017 10:13

Ah the giant jar of ampoule, was wondering when you'd get to that, Bagel. Honey and propolis extract are great hydrators and anti-inflammatories. In that vein, it's a bit pricey for a Korean skincare product, but the I'm From Honey facemask is much loved, although I suspect it will be a while before you get through the giant jar of ampoule you have now. Equally, a DIY mask of live yoghurt (lactic acid in low concentrations) and honey make for a great irritated and parched skin saviour.

MilfordFound · 19/11/2017 16:38

Thanks Botemp, I'll have a look at those wipes and pads. My skin definitely wants me to be doing something as its getting spottier and generally looking dull and texture is terrible.
I saw that Dr Sam says to avoid BHA while pregnant, it doesn't seem to be a universal recommendation. I've seen a few reputable medical sites say its not a problem. On that basis I've tried TO salicylic acid a couple of times but not liking the formula. I've stopped for now and I'll go back to the Paula's Choice version once baby is born.
I'm certainly not glowing, and I didn't with my last pregnancy either. It's a terrible lie they tell pregnant women!

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2017 22:15

Milford, I found being pg and having a toddler one of the most exhausting things I've ever done. I was sick both times, for the entire pgs; couldn't even brush my teeth without throwing up. Hope you feel better soon.

Bo I would have to disagree with this:-

I know it's the Black Friday extravaganza coming up but if they can sell it at half off and still turn a profit that's saying something.

For example some companies selling on Amazon will reduce products for Black Friday/Lightening Deals etc., deliberately making a loss. It will be part of their strategy to a) increase sales to improve organic ranking for keyword search terms and b) introduce their products to new customers. So it may not be that they are making a profit at half price. (I know bricks and mortar stores don't have the keyword rankings thing going on, but they may use it to hook new customers.

I work for a start up who sell their own brand on Amazon; I tell you, it has really opened my eyes to shopping online!!

botemp · 19/11/2017 22:27

I did mean that in reference to EL specifically, cosmetics have a massive markup and the ANR is such a cult product that really knows no true rival in the western market that it makes it a fair assessment to say they're still making a profit.

Other offers are genuinely sold at cost or less merely for promotional purposes although I have to say outside of the US I haven't really seen much of that. I know the UK is more BF focused so perhaps it occurs more frequently there but I've yet to see anything on par with the American markdowns. In startups it definitely seems to be par for the course to offer these type of deals that are probably cutting their margins fine. Face Theory is always on offer and I think they will continue to do so until the business really lifts itself from the Amazon/Shopify realm, though perhaps they never intend to and that's just their business model. It's rather frightening to see the accounts on startups in the first years and the casual acceptance running at a loss is.

OP posts:
GoGoGazelle · 20/11/2017 06:40

I really wanted to like ANR - thought it would be a treat for bad nights while the DC were younger, but I reacted to something in it. Oh well, saves some £££.
I'm looking for a night cream as my body shop vit e one is running out. Any recommendations for 40yo skin, dehydrated, some lines, some sensitivity, some oiliness. I react to Shea butter and anything by Kiehl's.

Pupsiecola · 20/11/2017 08:13

Our start up is doing very well, thankfully :) I'm employee number two and it's fascinating. I'm learning so much and using a lot of the business degree I completed two years ago. Our business model is to sell online, but we don't enter the sales now.

Gogo I really like the EltaMD night cream.

Pupsiecola · 20/11/2017 08:16

My skin is feeling so much better after just a week of a more layered approach and using a couple more products. And I'm enjoying doing it again whereas I'd lost the joy in it.

banivani · 20/11/2017 16:09

Bagel, glad you like the Scinic ampoule! I've been working my way through mine for ages, it does last. Good basic layering product!

GoGoGazelle · 20/11/2017 16:52

pupsie sounds like we have a similar job and I agree about the skincare too - I'm only a couple of days in and already feel so much better

EnidButton · 20/11/2017 17:35

I’m drinking cherry juice (the concentrated sour cherry kind) to help my foot pain and weirdly my skin looks a bit glowy after drinking it. Confused Could just be that it’s helping me sleep a bit better.

Nothing to report skincare wise. I’ve switched my attention to my wardrobe. I definitely need to stop indulging in sweet treats and hot chocolates though. More green veg.

JDSTER · 20/11/2017 18:53

Must be all those antioxidants Enid making your skin look good. Hope it’s helping with the pain. Sorry to hear about your job olli.
Not much to report here skinwise either. I haven’t made any major changes. Continuing with alternating PC BHA and TO retinoid at night (using up and won’t rp). Oddly liking the oily texture of TO reversatrol mixed in with Vit C in the morning. I’ve yet to try my medik 8 Vit C kindly sent by pupsie (ANR in the post today btw).

userallusedup · 20/11/2017 19:18

I’ve not made any changes to my routine either, I’m still lurgy-fied so between that and work travel I haven’t even got round to trying the Vichy Vit c yet. Really must do (it’s sitting out ready for tomorrow, just need to remember to use it!) as my skin definitely needs a boost, it’s looking very dull and a bit dehydrated.

Congratulations Mint 🎉🎉🎉 and I’m sorry to hear about your job Olli Flowers

botemp · 20/11/2017 20:04

Pestle & Mortar have launched a new eye cream, the promo pic is very avocado-ey. I'm left wondering if it's anything like the Kiehl's avocado eye cream. Pricier than the Kiehl's though.

Bani I’m just so relieved it’s not irritating my skin - it will last for ages! Also like the Pyunkang Essence Toner. What else do you use?

I’m just annoyed that I had also ordered the Dr Jart (sample size duo for approx £20) as well. I don’t think I like them as much but I can always have them in my bag and use them as hand cream, I suppose!

miffy2 · 20/11/2017 20:53

I have amended my routine slightly due to the arrival of my DE Vitamin C and the removal of the night-time Nivea C serum.

AM I cleanse, use glycolic toner (a couple of times a week) and follow with Vichy 89 or Pestle & Mortar HA, DE serum, Kiehl's super multi corrective cream and SPF. Lovely hydrated skin gets me through the day!

I have two nightly routines 3 times a week each with Sunday being reserved for extra hydration (Blithe 8-beans toner or a sheet mask).

I am alternating nights of BR P50W and Differin gel, followed by a serum and cream.

I will move on to the regular P50 next month and will probably buy Pestle & Mortar's Superstar retinol oil when the Differin runs out as I have used a bunch of samples and my skin loves it.

Swollen under-eye area is still an issue with me; I am sleeping fine, drinking lots of water and cutting down on caffeine and sugar. They are not permanent as there are days when the swelling is minimal or hardly noticeable and days when it is terrible. I don't know what else to do. I am reducing eye cream as I think it makes it worse. I still dab a little hydrating cream in the morning (to avoid the area being cakey once I have applied my makeup) but I use the tiniest amount at night now and nowhere above the orbital bone.

botemp · 20/11/2017 20:57

Could it be down to makeup, miffy? I recently had a light bulb moment with the Essen mascara being the cause of slight irritation and suddenly dealing with swollen undereyes. Could be something out of date too?

OP posts:
Pupsiecola · 20/11/2017 20:59

Enid what's the cherry juice please?

Thanks JDSTER

Who bought the new LRP Double Repair? I'm sure a couple of people did... How you getting on?

userallusedup · 20/11/2017 21:07

What eye cream do you use Miffy? I had to give up on LRP redermic eyes as it was irritating, even if just used round the orbital area it seemed to migrate and make my eyes sore and a bit puffy, like hay fever eyes.

Or like Bo says it could be mascara or other eye makeup. Boots no 7 eye makeup (both mascara and eyeshadows) irritates my eyes and I’ve had issues with a few other mascaras too, Rimmel and Maybelline were definitely culprits.
