Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

The Bioderma Hydrabio serum is good; I used it for two or three years and rated it. But I am now 61 and it isn't quite man enough to keep the years at bay, so I am branching out a bit. My DSis didn't like it; her skin is less tolerant than mine.

I know you are all unconvinced about gadgets, but I bought the mini version of the NuSkin microcurrents massager about three weeks ago, ON SPECIAL OFFER, now ended, and I do think it is improving the wrinkles down to the jowls. On one side more than the other TBH. The promise is to stimulate collagen production, and it is one of very few gadgets certified by the USFDA as doing as stated. There's a 90 day money back so I am waiting to see whether I look better at the end of the trial. I should probably point out before posting that my parents are in rude good health in their 80s, and my whole family look young for whatever age they are.

botemp · 14/11/2017 20:23

I've had a look at the Clarins. Going by the INCI alone I wouldn't waste my money, all the magical plant ingredients are only there in teeny tiny amounts after the preservatives. I think in total all those magical extracts can't account for much more than 1% total. The rest is basically an (non-mineal oil) oily base made up of derivatives, some glycerin and water for hydration.

Thanks for taking the trouble to do that Bo.

Thank you user x

Interesting blog post on why vitamin C sometimes stains skin www.labmuffin.com/vitamin-c-can-stain-skin-avoid/

mintmagnummm · 15/11/2017 12:49

What products should I be looking at to help with texture irregularities of skin? I.e pores/slight orange peel look Confused and redness. Any product suggestions greatly appreciated preferably easily available from uk.
At the moment I’m using my dermalogica ultra calming cleanser, a hydrating mist (sukin) and a sukin day and night cream. Oh and my avene spf in the am.

mintmagnummm · 15/11/2017 13:34

Oh and has anyone used the indeed labs moisture jelly?

mintmagnummm · 15/11/2017 13:55

And what about Paula’s choice 2% bha gel??

botemp · 15/11/2017 14:40

mint, we've had this conversation before and it's usually something else that's prompting this need for something new. I know you mentioned being in the hospital a lot, hope all is well Flowers

My answer is the same as then, stay away from the actives and look at non-active alternatives like the NIOD non-acid thingy or the SkinCeuticals Retexturing Activator if you absolutely must, but proceed with caution and do question your genuine need for this.

banivani · 15/11/2017 14:41

Have not tried the indeed labs moisture jelly, but did many moons ago try the hydralorum whatsit moisture serum that Caroline Hirons raved about - was underwhelmed considering the price.

If you want to combat pores and texture you'd need to look at acids and niacinamide, surely?

JDSTER · 15/11/2017 15:14

mint as Bo said, usual things which would be your first port of call will be likely irritating for your skin. Have you/could you use a niacinamide product, for example in a moisturiser? Cerave is available on Amazon I think, but maybe there’s ingredients in there you can’t tolerate?

Pupsiecola · 15/11/2017 16:07

JDSTER, I posted the Vit C today :-)

JDSTER · 15/11/2017 17:34

Thanks pupsie Flowers. I’ve been away but home tonight so I’ll look out ANR

Pupsiecola · 15/11/2017 18:08

Honestly no rush. I was in Boots today and picked up one of their sachets so just send whenever you can. Thank you. And do let me know how you get on with the Vit C! I was keeping it in the fridge. I sent both bottles, as it was easiest to leave the dispenser in the one that I've been using. You can just wash and discard, atlhough it's never been in contact with my skin.

I'm out for a run later. I'm wondering whether to put something on my skin to protect it from the cold, now that the temperature has dropped?

EnidButton · 15/11/2017 20:40

Mint I was only in a hospital for 5 hours yesterday (and not for myself) and my skin felt dry and irritated afterwards. I think it’s the high temperatures and dry air. Plus the fact being in a hospital environment is never much fun and usually at least a bit stressful. I’d give it a couple of days (if you’re not in hospital then) and then ask yourself if you really do want some different things to try. Try not to think about it for a couple of days, eat well, drink plenty of water and get some sleep or at least some rest. Flowers Hope you feel better soon.

JDSTER · 15/11/2017 20:56

Enid and Mint- I hope you're doing ok and theses are routine appointments you're having to go to.
pupsie- it's a 7ml unopened sample bottle I've got. I'll post Friday.

Pupsiecola · 15/11/2017 23:29

Fab. Thanks JDSTER!.

mintmagnummm · 16/11/2017 06:44

Thanks for the kind words everyone Flowers. I know hospitals themselves on top of being so poorly has an effect on the skin however, I do feel I genuinely have this skin concern and need something to add to routine to address it. My skin doesn’t feel uncomfortable after cleansing at all any more so that’s an improvement and my routine has been very basic for a long time now.

mintmagnummm · 16/11/2017 06:45

Oh and meant to say whenever I’ve used a product with nia in (moisturisers, olay, lrp) they have irritated my skin (redness, itchy and a horrible residual feel)

mintmagnummm · 16/11/2017 07:37

Bo I may go for the niod naap but will wait a little longer as not entirely happy with the sukin moisturisers as my skin goes red for a bit and they tingle ever so slightly. Which is wh I was asking about the indeed labs moisture jelly, it seems plain and suitable for my concerns (for a moisturiser)
Which of the thermal waters do u rate most bo? I wasn’t keen on avene but haven’t tried lrp or Vichy, also is the new Vichy serum, is it mineral 89?? Any good?
I want to have a routine and products that actually make a difference to my skin and I actually feel content using, I hope to find this by 2018 which is why I’m starting now to look! I’m getting married 2019 so it’s very important for me.

botemp · 16/11/2017 07:51

Congratulations, mint! Cake Wine

I'll take a look at the indeed later today. If you're willing to take the risk with HA the Mineral 89 should potentially be a safe bet. The HA in it is very small in amount and a higher molecular weight so far less likely to irritate.

My skin likes the Vichy water best, LRP I like too. I never liked the Avene one. Currently still going through a giant Uriage one which is inoffensive, don't hate it but don't love it either but it may be just the right type of bland for someone else.

Have you ever tried the Urea 5% from Eucerin? That could potentially solve your need for gentle exfoliation (as the Urea functions as one, albeit very slowly) and a different moisturiser.

OP posts:
banivani · 16/11/2017 08:15

Well mint off the top of my head - I liked the serums from Estelle & Thild before, but I thought it was a bit expensive since I ran out quite fast.

mintmagnummm · 16/11/2017 09:27

Thank you bo. Ok I’ll wait until u report back about the indeed labs. No I’ve not tried that eucerin one is it in a jar or tube? Think there’s one for day and night?? So would that eliminate the need for something like naap? I’ll prob go for the Vichy water then thanks again. Do you the the sukin could potentially be troublesome with the tingling?

Thanks also bani I won’t bother looking at those if they aren’t particularly cost effective.

mintmagnummm · 16/11/2017 10:03

Just looked on boots website and eucerin have a 5% urea replenishing cream which is in a jar and another 5% cream in a tube. There’s also a night one in a tube. Is there a specific one which is more suitable?

mintmagnummm · 16/11/2017 10:27

Ok I’m taking over Enid now in the multiple posting!.....if I decide to continue with the sukin day and night cream (despite the tingle and slight redness I do really like them and this feeling only lasts seconds) would it be safe to use the niod naap with these?
I just feel like I’m missing something that could help with the shine/dehydration/redness/pores! It was definitely worse after being in the hospital.
