Are there 'rules' for shoe colour with a black evening dress?

I was wondering what colour shoes look better with a black dress. I like the idea of a primary colour shoe but would this make a dress look 'cheap'? Is it better to stick with silver sandals or shoes. Is it better to be like Kate Middleton and opt for nude. I know nude is a marmite colour but I like them, probably because they are easy to wear. Or are black shoes the only way to go. Bearing in mind that the shoe can be mid heeled at best, are black shoes with a black dress very frumpy unless they are killer heels?

What do you all think?

Did I?

I'm sorry I honestly don't even remember but I like them. Are they a little 'Wintery' looking.

I was also just looking at www.dunelondon.com/en-ie/aurrora-mid-heel-court-shoe-0085503940172218/ but I much prefer the price of the burgandy ones though I like the bright ones as they look a bit 'happier'.

BTW they are for a wedding. Unsure if that makes any difference.

Again, I personally would avoid primary red –I don't really think it looks like a 'Spanish dancer' Grin but do think black and red can make you look as if you're in vintage costume.

I like the burgundy ones because they're that bit darker; and the velvet adds interest. Is the wedding a) in the northern hemisphere and b) soon? If so then does it matter if they look 'wintery'? (NB I don't think they do anyway!)

I linked to the burgandy Dune heels above. Sorry for confusion, they came up in an ad and caught my eye as being simple but just a bit different with the heel and fabric. The aurora mid heel look nice too.

Peppermeant, YOU'RE Spartacus! Grin

The dune shoes are lovely.

You have your 50s,60,70s + to look classic (or funerals) I'd go and find an amazing coloured statement shoes and stand out.

Red and black go great you just need to find the right red that matches your tone of skin/hair.

An amazing pair of shoes detracts from parts of your outfit or your self your not keen on!

Hate burgundy reminds me of fils over all!

Google black dress red shoes, black dress gold shoes ect... and see what the images come up with then you can go from there

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 13:26

I like the red Dune too but I don't want to look like I'm wearing a costume iykwim?

I want to look, date I say it, fashionable without being flashy. The wedding is going to be a big affair, lots of 'creative' people. I want to look reasonably like I haven't gone to the wrong venue.

Yes, honestly, I think shiny red looks cheap.

I don't think you'll look like you're in costume in the burgundy Dune ones.

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 15:28

I thought the Asos Ines looked cheap too. Well they are I suppose.

Do the Dune red ones look cheap too?

The velvet burgundy ones? I don't think so, no. But then again I'm the one advocating for them. Grin

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 16:10

I quite like the Dune croc effect Aurora Ines. Cheap looking too?

These?

They're not bad. A bit red though, if that's not a stupid thing to say Grin and if you care about the red-and-black thing.

The leopard version are nice, and you can wear leopard with anything so they'd be a good investment.

I really like the dune aurrora heels. Either bright red (Iove the croc texture) or animal print. I know your dress has a full skirt but love the bright red shoes in this look

Rhiannon say what? Grin

RhiannonOHara · 12/10/2017 10:30

A weak joke about who it was who linked to that pair of shoes, Pepper.

Not very funny really, I know. Grin

Intomyarms · 12/10/2017 11:19

The pony print is more versatile but I associate animal print with older women either very glamorous or very cheap which I know is ridiculous, especially considering I'm in my forties! I'm torn because the pony print would dress up clothes I already own and I'm far more likely to wear them again but the red are calling me.

A lot of money (for me) for shoes I will only ever wear once along with the cost of the dress I will definitely never wear again. I've made that mistake too many times hence my reluctance I suppose.

I like the burgundy dune ones and love the animal print ones.

Not keen on any of the shiny/patent ones and in my experience they don't tend to be very comfy.
