Are there 'rules' for shoe colour with a black evening dress?

I was wondering what colour shoes look better with a black dress. I like the idea of a primary colour shoe but would this make a dress look 'cheap'? Is it better to stick with silver sandals or shoes. Is it better to be like Kate Middleton and opt for nude. I know nude is a marmite colour but I like them, probably because they are easy to wear. Or are black shoes the only way to go. Bearing in mind that the shoe can be mid heeled at best, are black shoes with a black dress very frumpy unless they are killer heels?

What do you all think?

I think red shoes with a black dress looks like you're doing 50s vintage. Fine if you are, but not if you're not!

I'd go metallic, but not a really shiny silver like the ones in your links; a soft gold or pewter, or sort of 'aged' silver.

Something like this?

Intomyarms · 10/10/2017 20:02

I'm a little afraid that red is very cliche tbh. I am drawn to making the dress me younger looking. I am in my early forties but a little younger looking (so I'm told). The blue appeals more or even mustard but the shoes I find are cheap looking or four inches high and there isn't a hope I will last in shoes that high.

The M&S ones look ok but is there really a big difference between them and nude?

I am beginning to think my taste is 'red shoes, fur coat and no knickers'. Red shoes make me feel good I may have a few pairs whatever makes you happy on the end of your pinkies. Shocking pink? Fushia?

Peppermeant · 10/10/2017 23:52

I think the metallic m&s ones linked above could border on frumpy - I think it's a combo of mid heel and round toe and "soft metallic". They scream "bridesmaid" to me.

I really like the style of the angled block heels, just not the shiny silver. Something like this would be easy to wear and on trend but I'm not sure about the colour with black

BubblesBuddy · 10/10/2017 23:57

Look at Mode in Pelle mid heel shoes. A classic pump is always a good choice and I love their purple suede ones. Mid heels will be more comfortable.

Black but interesting, grey, silver, or a muted colour look great. Nude is a daytime colour. Red can be difficult. No to ankle straps. Heeled Pumps will elongate your legs. This is why lots of people wear them! There are some great brocade or velvet shoes around at the moment. DD bought a pair of mustard satin ones from Zara.

BubblesBuddy · 11/10/2017 00:00

I would wear the modern rarity shoes to work, not to an evening do. They are not on trend for evening and they show them with coats and trousers when I've seen them advertised. The style of dress needs classic shoes.

BubblesBuddy · 11/10/2017 00:06

Vivacious by Russell and Bromley may suit. Several colourways and all look suitable for evenings or smart daywear. I want a pair!

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 00:09

Thank you to all of you for helping me. I'm at my wits end tbh and am seriously thinking of dropping out of going as I'm getting so stressed about what I'm wearing.

This is what I'd choose if I had the money but my budget isn't anywhere near it.

I will look at Zara although Zara shoes are hard on my feet but within budget.

I really like the burgandy shoes linked above but not for the dress. Too heavy.

I like these www.zara.com/ie/en/velvet-high-heel-shoes-p16224201.html?v1=4739016&v2=269195 but they are very high for me.

What do you think of these ones? www.zara.com/ie/en/satin-high-heel-court-shoes-p16218201.html?v1=4620620&v2=269195

I've worn black and red a couple of times.
One time: plain red dress, back jacket, black shoes and black bag.
2nd time: red and black dress, black jacket, black shoes and black bag.
As long as it's not too much I think it's fine.
I can't comment on accessories as I only ever wear my proper yellow gold jewellery.

Freyanna · 11/10/2017 00:17

I really like the red ones.

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 00:17

I've just bought shoes from Zara

www.zara.com/ie/en/mid-heel-faux-patent-court-shoes-p17220201.html?v1=4742007&v2=269195 but I think they look too cheap and it might have been better to have bought these

www.zara.com/ie/en/velvet-high-heel-court-shoes-p16244201.html?v1=4959012&v2=269195

and I bought the blue ones I linked above.

Getting quite desperate now.

Which red ones Freyanna? The burgandy ones are too heavy and although beautiful, they are shoes I'd associate with work. I am just not fashionable to be able to pull them off outside an office environment.

The R&B shoes are beyond my budget although beautiful. If they were shoes I'd wear often, I'd pay that money but for a once off pair of shoes, I can't justify it.

The shoes you bought are perfect. If you can, add a very thin red belt and matching lipstick and a black clutch bag and you are good to go.

When accessorising less is best, so I would go further than a red and black ring and natural nail (just a shiny varnish , no color, too much)

Peppermeant · 11/10/2017 02:12

I love the blue ones! I hope the satin looks nice and that they are comfortable.

The red patent ones look stiff and not all that comfortable (and personally think the style is a bit ordinary although you'd prob get lots of wear out of them!).

Those R&B shoes are hideous sorry!!

Peppermeant · 11/10/2017 02:31

Now I'm being inundated with ads for red shoes! Grin These did catch my eye however!

RhiannonOHara · 11/10/2017 10:13

The M&S ones look ok but is there really a big difference between them and nude?

I think there is, yes, personally. I don't think they're frumpy or 'bridesmaidy' either; but I do think satin is both.

I think the red patent ones look stiff too.

RhiannonOHara · 11/10/2017 10:14

PS those Dune ones you link to are fine. High though! I couldn't wear them.

Ttbb · 11/10/2017 10:30

Either use or black are safe options. A more adventurous option would be a suede/velvet bright colour like emerald green, burnt umber or, raspberry (but not basic like pillar box red or royal blue). No leather/shiny/glittery coloured shoes-it looks cheap.
Same goes for Metallics. Black with metallic colours also looks cheap.

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 10:38

Either black or which colour Tibbs?

OP posts:
Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 10:43

Ok I've just cancelled the Zara order.

Back to square one!

OP posts:
RhiannonOHara · 11/10/2017 10:56

How about the Dune ones you liked?

By the way, black with metallics doesn't look cheap! Well, maybe if the shoes themselves look cheap, which I think very shiny metallics do.

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 11:19

Which Dune shoes? I'm getting so confused. 😀

OP posts:
NearlyChristmasNow · 11/10/2017 11:19

Have you looked at Irregular Choice? Your link to the mytheresa shoes made me think of them:

Intomyarms · 11/10/2017 11:47

No not irregular choice. I really dislike that brand though fifteen years ago I thought it was great :).

RhiannonOHara · 11/10/2017 11:52

Was it not you who linked to the Dune ones? I'm confused too Grin
