Warm Waterproof Coat for Work

hollyisalovelyname · 01/10/2017 10:08

I am looking for a warm, waterproof coat for walking commute to work.
I don't want it to make me look like a barrel Smile.
Does it exist ?

Seasalt. Ugly, but cheap, warm, long and waterproof. I'm not really selling it am I? Grin Seriously, I bought one last year against my better judgement and I love/hate it.

loveka · 01/10/2017 10:11

Seasalt Janelle. Not ugly!

Shylo · 01/10/2017 10:13

Do you have a TK Maxx near you? They currently have in some French Connection waterproof, hooded coats which are waisted so make you (well me lol) look less barrel like

LittleWitch · 01/10/2017 10:14

loveka beauty is clearly in the eye of the beholder Wink.

Thank you

I have the Seasalt Janelle too - got it in a sale but not worn it yet. It certainly doesn't spark joy or whatever it is all your clothes are supposed to do but it's ok and who knows, if does its job properly then love may grow.

It has tabs at the waist which give it a bit of shaping.

Protected Species are worth a look if you have the budget.

MulhuddartDrive · 01/10/2017 11:52

I love my craghoppers coat, which I got last year.

SmashyCup · 01/10/2017 23:43

Those Protected Species coats are gorgeous, Floisme!

BluebellGal · 02/10/2017 19:43

Seasalt coats are neither ugly nor cheap

BluebellGal · 02/10/2017 19:44

I have a protected species coat. They are not particularly warm but good for my cycling commute

Judydreamsofhorses · 02/10/2017 19:57

Like flo I bought the Seasalt Janelle in the sales. It definitely does not spark joy for me. I wore it for the first time last week and while it was definitely waterproof I felt so unstylish I think it will go on eBay shortly.

I quite like the Next puffy raincoat. I bought it because it comes with a convenient maternity insert, but it looked quite nice even without it in early pregnancy. And it's warm with a nice hood!

hollyisalovelyname · 02/10/2017 20:58

Thank you.
It really has to be waterproof ( and warm for the winter) as I live in Ireland and walk to work. Needs to be smart for work so not a big puffa 'Michelin man' coat.

I have a black Didrikson coat, very waterproof and cosy too. I was going to get a Seasalt but was put off by the nautical hood tie things.

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2017 21:04

I have a Marmot Chelsea. Managed to get it slightly reduced at Go Outdoors. It's bum covering. Very warm. (I bought it for standing at the school gates on perishing cold days!) Not hugely padded though. Doesn't make me look too round! And I'm a size 16. Really good hood. Properly waterproof too.

CrabappleCake · 02/10/2017 21:25

North face triclimate Suzanne. Warm, waterproof, transformed my walking to work.

Millybingbong · 02/10/2017 21:27

this is quite the depressing thread. I was coveting a seasalt for this exact situation; but I am starting a new job in the city and it needs to be reasonably smart.

SmashyCup · 02/10/2017 21:41

Crabapple is right, North Face coats are amazing. Mine kept me toasty in minus 20 last year!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 02/10/2017 22:43

I love my Seasalt raincoat. It’s shorter so I can drive in it without sitting on it too much and I actually find it very flattering too. It’s a bit fitted and has a nice shape. Is very warm and totally waterproof.

I know you said not Mitchelin man but I love my Tog24 coat too. Really lightweight but really warm and dry.

What's the sizing like for that Patagonia coat @Notmybag?

Blogwoman · 03/10/2017 06:52

Keen to know if this exists too. Smart & warm OR waterproof but both - not seen that yet. I also walk to work. Have a seasalt raincoat, which I don't love, and a uniqlo big puffy duvet job which is fabulously warm but not smart & not really waterproof. I've been eyeing up those Protected Species coats but wouldn't be warm presumably & £££. Hobbs trench coats I like the look of, then read they're not waterproof Hmm.

CrabappleCake · 03/10/2017 07:17

NF one is fitted so looks smart and not too outdoorsy, the Patagonia looks similar.

It really is lovely having a proper warm waterproof coat.

hollyisalovelyname · 03/10/2017 07:43

Thank you all.
This coat is not for standing at matches or walking the dog or driving in a car.
It is for walking to work, so needs to look smart, be waterproof and warm. Office is warm so I won't have heavy jumper on underneath, just a suit/blouse or dress on.
Knee length.
