Is Bobbi Brown worth the ££££??

Just had a mini makeover at a Bobbi Brown counter. They used the stick foundation, some kind of white plumping cream, an ace powder bronzer thing and a gorgeous moisturiser. I look about 20 years younger... BUT... could an expert make up artist on any brand work that magic?? Or is it solely down to the Bobbi brown make up? What I mean is, could I get the same results using boots no. 7 if I applied it correctly or is BB really worth all that extra money??

I have converting my skincare and make up over to Bobbi Brown over the last six months, I love it, the skincare has made a noticeable difference to my skin, my repurchases have been cleansing oil, treatment lotion, hydrating eye cream and the illuminating balm.
I love the skin foundation and the nude finish powder, as well as the retouching wand. I used to have dehydrated acne prone skin and now I finally use the less is more approach after having a mini makeover done in York. I don't regret any of my purchases, it's the only brand I've used where I've been totally happy with the results... so I say yes Smile

I use just bobbi brown bb and lipstick all expertly applied with my fingers lol - looks make up free and makes me look years younger. That’s it. For me it’s worth it as my entire make up kit for a year costs just £40!

bakewelltarte · 25/09/2017 16:56

I would say it's worth the £££ I have switched to Bobbi Brown (had a makeover after 16 months of no sleep since my baby arrived and it has made me look so much fresher!) In particular, their base and face makeup is superb. I use the serum foundation applied with the full coverage brush and my skin just glows! I also love the corrector and full coverage concealer and the long wear shadow, and the lip crush balms and the bronzer and brow kit. Argh I love it all!

fivefour3twoone · 25/09/2017 17:07

I know someone who uses Bobbi brown makeup and their face is literally transformed by it, it's amazing. I keep meaning to buy it myself...

PollyPerky · 25/09/2017 17:23

I like the make up but not the skincare. If you read Paula's Choice/Beautypedia, she gives a damning report on most BB skincare, due to irritating ingredients. I've got various samples of their moisturiser and serum both of which are highly perfumed.

I think there is a temptation to think high end = results when it may come down to paying more attention to your skin having forked out.

HOWEVER, I do like their make up but think it's overpriced. The reason I buy it is for the colour range.

I have
eyeshadows (matte shades)
concealers
lippies
blusher
nude finish powder
gel eyeliner

I'm not convinced that they are much better quality than low end ranges but the shades they do suit my mature skin (no glitter, pale blusher etc.)

For example, I can't get my head round £20 ish for an eyeliner pencil when you can buy one for £7.

I'm coming to the end of some of the products and may well look for cheaper options.

Leicesterpiggott · 25/09/2017 17:25

This is all good! Thank you.. sounds like I might have to grit my teeth and fork out... keep the thoughts coming please!!

I love BB makeup! The concealers (the serum one and the pots with powder) and peach corrector are great so is the cream blush, the tinted moisturizer and the little pots of gel eyeliner.

You've just reminded me how lovely the eye cream is... hmmm.. might treat myself to some.

PollyPerky · 25/09/2017 17:29

I have yet to find one of their foundations that I love. I've used the stick one (nice but not much coverage since they reformulated, so use it for touch ups on top of another foundation), Skin Foundation - very watery. Moisture Rich- too oily. Longwear- very matte and cakey. There are others I've not tried.

I use Dior Star foundation.

I like their Luxe lippy but it's £27. I only buy when there is 10% off or more via John Lewis or of BB online has a good offer where they give free samples.

moreismore · 25/09/2017 18:45

Definitely worth the money. A foundation stick lasts me almost a year (I don't do full face with it tho) Blusher has lasted me over a year, bronzer the same.
Eyeshadow palette still going strong after several years of fairly regular use! I have my eyebrow colour in there too.
The eyeshadow primers and under eye concealer are fab.
I love the long wear eyeshadow sticks also, so quick and easy and don't crease at all.
Not nuts about the lipstick but I'm not a lipstick person.
Invest in decent brushes for foundation, powder/blusher and shadow too. It'll make a difference to the finished 'look'

legolammb · 25/09/2017 18:57

I love their foundation (and that they actually make it in my skin tone). I've never bought anything else of theirs due to price - I'm interested to know if there's a huge difference between quality of their eyeshadow and a cheaper brand like MUA that has some lovely colours.

Squashit · 25/09/2017 19:30

I have had a couple of eyeshadow palettes and I have been underwhelmed with the pigment and staying power. I find Mac and Estée Lauder much better.

I think that they do do some lovely shades of lipstick which are hard to find elsewhere. The luxe ones are not worth the extra money though.

I like their lipsticks in Italian Rose and nude.

Judydreamsofhorses · 25/09/2017 19:54

Personal preference, I think there are some things BB do that I really like, and others that I prefer from other brands. Their cream blushers are fab, and I like some of their lipsticks, but I rate other brands more for the rest. I haven't rated the skincare I've tried from BB, and find the nail polish really chippy.

If of any interest, my choices are:

Foundation - YSL
Powder - By Terry
Glowy powder - Hourglass
Powder blush - Nars and Hourglass
Nails - Smith and Cult, Chanel

I don't really bother with eye makeup other than mascara, but lipsticks I have many, many, many. Particular favourites are Nars and MAC.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/09/2017 20:13

I used their eyeshadow palletew for years then bought an NYX one and was blown away by the pigment.

Years ago really spendy make up was worth it but the cheaper brands are catching up now

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/09/2017 20:15

I don't like the gel eye liners, they make my eyes itch.

I think it's all so bland and massively over priced.

Rightpivotturn · 25/09/2017 21:58

I think as with all make up ranges they have some excellent products and some not so. I'm 52 and really like several of their products including their lipsticks (great sheer colours in some fantastic berry shades), a BB cream which suits my skin nicely, cream blush (though I also like Clinique chubby sticks blush), and their long wear gel eyeliner which I love now. Foundation is OK but I prefer a Clarins one that suits my skin better, bronzer is OK but again prefer Guerlain, and though their mascaras are good, I've seen others which are just as. What they ARE good at (and their sales staff are brilliant at) is putting together a look for you that isn't overdone, which doesn't hard sell and demonstrates clearly how to use the products. It's a look that works very well for me - I look reasonably well presented but not as though I've spent 10 hours doing my face or as though I'm just heading to a nightclub. And I've just bought their illuminating primer and it's great! Beautifully moisturising but still a really good base for other makeup.

PollyPerky · 25/09/2017 22:06

I think equivalent brands like Dior, Chanel and Laura Mercier have good lipsticks.

I like their range of eye shadows- cement and grey are my go-to shades.
Love the creamy concealer and the new one in the tube with the sponge applicator. Like the nude finish powder.

DON'T like the pot rouge- they are so greasy- make my skin look wet / shiny -(I've normal- dry skin) and they don't last.

Not fussed by mascara- prefer Lancome.

Gel eyeliner pencil- it's okay but not sure now about the colours- the violet black and chocolate shades still look very 'black'! But they are very soft and don't drag the skin.

DO rate the powder blusher. Also like their brushes- built up quite a collection.

Ktown · 25/09/2017 22:37

The eye sticks are crap, as are all the talc powders.
The concealers and foundation are nice though.
I think they are very expensive and Mac does the same thing but better.

Housewife2010 · 26/09/2017 06:51

Watch Hannah Martin, BB's pro artist on Youtube. She is very watchable and shows how to get the BB look. - I still can't get my eyeliner right though. I really like the Bb look and their eyeshadow sticks, but have too many of their gorgeous palettes which I've decided now that they don't have the pigment of MAC.

bakewelltarte · 26/09/2017 16:20

Another vote for Hannah Martin's tutorials here- the looks are so easy to recreate and she is lovely!

SPARKS17 · 26/09/2017 16:26

I just spunked £125 on five things for my "bridal" makeup from BB after having a bridal makeover.

A powder foundation, corrector, concealer, eye shadow and weird tinted lip balm stick that made my lips look fab.

I was really impressed with the foundation and lip thing, first time I have shopped there since early twenties.

Agree there are lots of other comparable brands around now, Tarte is my favourite for eyeshadows and their Shape Tape concealer.

Missionocrity · 27/09/2017 11:44

I like their foundation and concealers but am now looking for alternatives as BB sell in China which means they animal test (as China stipulates cosmetics must be animal tested)

Ditto Benefit and MAC. So far I've found NYX for concealers which I really like, Urban decay for shadow/eye liner and most of my skincare is Elemis or REN. Struggling a bit for foundation but determined to keep at it!

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 27/09/2017 11:51

I'm a Winter. Their shades don't suit me. Even the foundations are too warm.

EraArils · 27/09/2017 12:55

I hated their gel eye liner, the Maybelline one is far superior. It seems every time I buy something from Bobbi Brown I end up underwhelmed. I always feel ripped off.
BB cream good by Rimmel BB cream is better and £15 cheaper. I bought the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick and used it once, its now relegated to my bad purchases makeup drawer.

CruzRamirez · 27/09/2017 13:06

Yes I think so. I'm turning to BB increasingly as the quality is great.

Deathraystare · 27/09/2017 16:52

Well I have tried the eye shadows, some of the gel liners, a mascara and some lipsticks, cream rouge and foundation stick. I liked them all. Not tried the skin care.
