Where does one purchase stylish, but REALLY COMFY clothing?

I'm not quite ready for Hotter shoes and elasticated waistbands, but I am tired of wearing stiff, restrictive clothes that are never really warm enough. I want to be comfy and cosy, without looking like I've completely given up on style. I want forgiving fits and soft, snuggly fabrics in neutral colours without patterns (as this seems to tip such clothing into the realm of Frumpsville.

Does anyone have suggestions or am I searching for the Holy Grail? Don't mind spending a bit but budget is more high-end high street than designer.

I seem to be buying from kit and kaboodle online. There stuff is easy to wear and I don't feel too frumpy in it

colouringinagain · 14/09/2017 16:09

Watching with interest, I am looking for double jersey mini skirts as at 5'2 everything else looks ridiculous!

LoniceraJaponica · 14/09/2017 16:46

What is double jersey?

MoGhileMear · 14/09/2017 16:47

Admittedly, some Cos stuff looks weird and billowy on I would never buy anything from them online, because it's impossible to judge without trying on and Oska has some godawful dowdy stuff. (Actually this season looks dire now that I look, but I've had some beautiful coats and jumpers from there, admittedly a while ago -- but what is with the penchant for three-quarter-length trousers???)

minipie · 14/09/2017 16:57

Reading and watching. I live in jeans and cashmere jumpers (the same 3 worn over and over!) so need some other ideas.

Dress and tights is appealing but what comfy shoes would look ok with that given I have short fat legs??

Pestilentialone · 14/09/2017 17:40

If you want to be warm and comfy, layer up. silk cotton mix t-shirt a bit expensive but the wash well and last. Team with matching thick tights and bung a dress over the top.

Buy boots that fit, with tights and a thin pair of socks underneath. Nobody looks stylish with cold or uncomfortable feet.

Pestilentialone · 14/09/2017 17:51

Mini how would your short fat legs look in these Red or Dead Maths boots?
Or wear some brogues, they are very acceptable for smart wear with dresses now.

I really like Cos, but if you just look at their website, it will put you *right8 off. The models are a very 'unusual' shape

NotAgainYoda · 14/09/2017 19:04

I think a lot of looking stylish is about material. I am a big fan of cotton silk. It can make a simple top look classy

MissWilmottsGhost · 14/09/2017 19:14

Just had a look at mint velvet. Fuck me that's expensive Shock Why is it so hard to find nice, comfy clothes at a reasonable price?

I live in Jersey dresses with cardigan, tights and boots in winter, or sandals in summer. Comfy and no ironing required. Winner.

minipie · 14/09/2017 19:19

Pretty dreadful Pestilent unfortunately! They'd cut off my calves at their widest point. Also I find any heel makes my back ache these days (pathetic really!)

I think I need knee high boots, flat and ideally as comfy as trainers... do they exist?

Synecdoche · 14/09/2017 19:20

I like Gap for jersey dresses, layering tops and knitwear

MissWilmottsGhost · 14/09/2017 19:23

Hush and toast out of my price range too, though I like some of the styles.

Anyone suggest similar but cheaper? No way can I spend more than £100 on a dress for everyday wear Sad

museumum · 14/09/2017 19:24

I forgot me you need to shop around - one (plain!) dress from Boden, one from new look, one from hush (and I'm also an hourglass 14) and a couple of tops from cos.

SukiTheDog · 14/09/2017 19:25

I've just ordered these to wear with skinny jeans and long knits. going "comfy" all the way this year and I couldn't care less if not particularly stylish. But them, I'm im my 50's and agree with you OP, stiff material, too tight waistbands and and being uncomfortable is just not what I want.

I really like the Pure Collection tube skirt.

I have an amazing stretchy comfy dress from m&s too - always gets compliments.

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2017 19:25

Sorry nothing to add but watching. I'm a size 16 and live in jeans and tshirt. Really want to make more of an effort.

You are definitely me!!!

My additional problem is that I have a really long body and tops, jumpers etc are always too short, and the waists of dresses are always too high.

Pastacube · 14/09/2017 19:25

def uniqlo they have a snuggly looking collection atm will find...

Pastacube · 14/09/2017 19:28

LoniceraJaponica · 14/09/2017 19:33

minipie have you looked at Rieker for footwear?

needtimewithwineandlesswhine · 14/09/2017 19:37

Gap - leggings, tunic dresses and nice scarf is my go to Autumn look and they have a sale on the now

minipie · 14/09/2017 19:39

Nope will have a look, thanks

LoniceraJaponica · 14/09/2017 19:42

I don't buy clothes online as sizes are just to unreliable and variable these days, so Gap is out as we don't have a Gap store any more. I sometimes go to a retail outlet that has a Gap store, but have never found anything I want to buy there. To quote an earlier poster - you could read a newspaper through so many of their clothes these days.

We don't have Uniqlo either.

minipie · 14/09/2017 19:45

Some of the Rieker ones look promising Lonicera though unfortunately no knee length black ones, though I like some tan knee ones and a couple of ankle black ones. Are they known for beimg comfy?

millifiori · 14/09/2017 19:46

There's no single place that does these clothes. Why not? Someone could make a fortune! You just need to look everywhere with those goals in mind and buy as soon as you find stuff that fits the bill. I want exactly the same sort of style as you. I find it in H&M, & Other Stories, Benetton, Jaeger online and small independent boutiques locally. Also, if you can sift through the acres of unbelievably hideous stuff, M&S do still have some classic basics tucked away. I've got the occasional lovely cashmere sweater from them, and good, silky, plain black palazzo pants.
