Facial oil

I just discovered that dehydrated skin is different from dry skin. 😊

I've been using a wee free sample bottle (overnight) from Clarins and the difference immediately, especially on the skin above my top lip is amazing. Would bio-oil do the same job or does it have to be specifically facial oil, anyone know?

I love the Ordinary's squalene oil. Makes my oily, yet dehydrated skin velvety soft, and plumped up. Also smooths out the fine lines.

ThierryEnnui · 12/09/2017 20:46

Clarins' Blue Orchid is specifically for dehydrated skins. It is the best one I know of. They also do Lotus (for oily skins) and Santal (for dry/more mature skin).

The only time I'd recommend putting Bio Oil on your face is to spot-treat scarring or sun spots.

Beautifullymixed · 12/09/2017 20:49

I also love natural oils, grapeseed, argan and olive oil are my favourites.

BusterGonad · 12/09/2017 22:11

I have Clarins Santal too! It smells amazing!

FiddleFigs · 12/09/2017 22:24

I've been using organic Argan oil, which has improved my skin. I used to use the Clarins blue orchid oil, and my skin is noticeably better since I switched in April.

Tantpoke · 12/09/2017 23:59

I use Clarins Lotus oil but I used huille prodigieuse over the summer and my skin just loved it. Both smell lush.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 13/09/2017 06:38

Could somebody advise please how to use the facial oil? On the clean skin, over serum or moisturiser? Better in the morning or evening?

mayhew · 13/09/2017 07:49

I do a version of hot cloth cleansing at night (massage in aqueous cream, clean off thoroughly with fresh facecloth) and then massage in small amount of oil at bedtime. Feels great in the morning.

ThierryEnnui · 13/09/2017 07:59

Mandala I use mine only in the evening but there's nothing to stop you using it in the morning (maybe just apply a bit less, as it's quite visibly oily).

I would cleanse, tone, serum, oil, moisturise. If your skin is fairly well behaved you don't necessarily need to use a serum before the oil, and certainly it would only need to be a light hydrating serum.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 13/09/2017 08:01

I've used squillions of oils in my time from massively expensive ones to cheap as chips non-branded almond/avocado/argan.

They are all very good- I'd say with the exception (for me) of rosehip which was totally emperor's new clothes.

Of the branded ones, I've loved Neal's Yard rose and NY Frankincense. Currently using L'Occitane Divine. Too soon to tell if it will make me look 25 again Grin

Interestingly, I've always understood from threads on here by people who really seem to know their stuff, that an oil goes on last, over the top of your moisturiser (something to do with size of molecules) but the L'Occitane woman was horrified and said no, no, no, oil first. So I don't know which order is correct, or indeed if any order is!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 13/09/2017 08:04

I love love love the pixi facial oil (m&s stock it).

MorrisZapp · 13/09/2017 08:06

I got one from waitrose, it was half price at £2.50. It smells lovely and has a cute dropper. It contains a mixture of natural oils.

TheHamptons · 13/09/2017 08:07

As a spot prone person I love MooGo's pure Tamanu oil. It smells a bit odd but it's great for helping acne scars, acne prevention and calming down skin like mine that struggles to find a balance. And it's only £8.

TheHamptons · 13/09/2017 08:08

Sorry, MooGoo! Find it at www.moogooskincare.co.uk

PeaceAndLove1 · 13/09/2017 08:10

I'm another almond oil user.

Timefortea99 · 13/09/2017 08:48

Nude Rescue Oil. Lightweight so you can use morning too. Just started using it again after stopping and wondered why I stopped.

Floisme · 13/09/2017 08:51

Another almond oil fan, from the grocery counter. I have sensitive skin and if it's ok to put in my mouth, I reckon it's safe to put on my face.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/09/2017 09:14

I cleanse with jojoba oil using the hot cloth method and I like the basic, standard rosehip from The Ordinary as a moisturiser. I don't tend to use moisturisers over the top, the oil is enough for me. It isn't a miracle worker (anything that claims to be makes me suspicious), it just leaves my skin smooth, soft and seems to help with pigmentation, texture and general 'glow'. I've been using pure rosehip for about 2yrs and I notice a difference in my skin if I skip it or swap it for a few days.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/09/2017 09:15

Blue Orchid Oil is one of the best for dehydrated skin.

You can try the Ordinary Maryland, but it's thinner and dryer.

Best way of using a facial oil is on slightly damp skin, so almost immediately after a toner.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/09/2017 09:23

As for the AM or PM question, mandala, I generally use in the evening but if my skin is especially dry or lacklustre I use it in the morning too. I probably wouldn't use it if I was wearing foundation though as I'd be concerned that the oil would cause the foundation to split or go weird in my skin. Although, I suppose textural changes would be less noticeable if the foundation was oil based rather than water based.

Oils wise, I'd look at the ingredients. A lot of the 'commercial' beauty oils you buy on the high street contain a load of fillers (silicone, mineral oil etc) before you get to the decent stuff. They can also be highly fragranced and/or artificially coloured, increasingly the likelihood of reaction (hello Clarins). Read the labels. Expensive doesn't always mean high quality.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/09/2017 09:28

I'm dubious about this 'damp skin' business. It feels like another way to sell us another stage in beauty.

Damp skin will either dilute the ingredients you've paid hard earned money for, or in the case of oils will do what exactly? Oil and water repel each other. What is the benefit of damp skin to oil application/absorption? Other than 'the beauty company press release / blogger /Caroline hirons said it, so it must be true' ?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/09/2017 09:34

I've been using it like this for years and so for me it's experience, rather then the gospel from a beauty blogger.

It sinks in quicker, you actuality need less oil, so it's more reasonable price wise. You can use foundation on top of oil if you put the oil on slightly damp skin. It don't have to be a toner, your skin can be damp from the cleansing.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/09/2017 09:34

It doesn't, not don't.

Faz2015 · 13/09/2017 09:40

I have tried trilogy rosehip which is good... I love pure argan oil.. so now I mix both and use at night... amazing !!!
