How much stuff do you own?

DH has a 2 door wardrobe with a drawer, i have a three door wardrobe and we have a small ish chest of drawers each, then a shoe rack downstairs (lots of mine live in the bottom of my wardrobe). Coats are hung in the hall. Sports gear is kept in a roll-away storage box.It seems crazy - how much do you have?!

I very much love decluttering so I have a small hanging rail and a chest of drawers. Neither are full. The sight of an overstuffed wardrobe looks awful to me!

rightknockered · 12/09/2017 00:00

I have two chests of drawers and two three door wardrobes. I live alone, although I do realise this is a shocking amount to have. I'm trying to declutter at the moment, but it's not going well. I like owning a lot of clothes and being prepared for what ever crops up.
I'm not very good with keeping up with laundry so need enough clothes to cover that. I'm also clumsy and always getting stains on myself. I don't now how people manage with such few clothes. I could never cope with just one hanging rail and a chest of drawers

SweetLuck · 12/09/2017 00:02

I like to have enough clothes for every eventuality too, but care more about how much I love them than the quantity. So I only have 2 dresses that could be classed as 'going out' dresses, but they are both perfect.

Would recommend Marie Kondo if you want to be better at decluttering.

rightknockered · 12/09/2017 00:06

I actually like all my clothes. How do you manage with just two dresses? I'd just get bored wearing the same two all the time.

rightknockered · 12/09/2017 00:07

It may be because I'm actually more of a creative/artistic person than my job allows.

SweetLuck · 12/09/2017 00:09

Only 2 going out dresses (maybe I just don't go out v much Grin) have about 6 dresses in total.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 12/09/2017 00:10

I have a large dressing room to myself. Marie Kondo would not be pleased Grin

rightknockered · 12/09/2017 00:13

A dressing room ... mmmm gosh I'd love that.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 12/09/2017 00:19

Best thing I ever spent money on rightknockered

I have a large round ottoman in the centre where I artistically lay out elegant outfits throw yesterday's dirty clothes

Theycalledmethewildrose · 12/09/2017 00:20

I have a four door wardrobe, it has a very inefficient use of space though.i have a large Ikea chest of drawers with four large drawers and four small drawers. I don't have anywhere to put my shoes so they collect dust cluttering up the space under my bed and thrown in the bottom of the wardrobe. I buy far too much yet don't wear many of the clothes I have and never seem to have the 'right' dress for the occasion.

I blame my excessive amount of clothes on weight gain and reluctance to throw out older clothes as dream of fitting into my pre baby clothes again.
I also have a love of coats and they take up a lot of space.

I buy to fill voids in my life. I buy and return a lot. I am trying to shop as I realise if I don't just stop, I will forever buy 'just one more top' and I can't afford to keep buying.

cleanasawhistle · 12/09/2017 00:26

I have a lot of stuff.....a lot less than usual as on a diet so had everything in lots of sizes , the big stuff has been bagged and gone.

I am lucky enough to have my own dressing room with walk in wardrobe...don't have to pack away summer/winter stuff away anymore.

I love clothes and handbags but have nothing expensive.

Openup41 · 12/09/2017 00:32

I have one double wardrobe. I store out of season clothes up in the loft. I own three winter coats, one of which I have had for 11/12 years and is for special occasions.

sweetluck I own about six to eight dresses - work, casual and going out.

bingohandjob · 12/09/2017 06:55

3 door wardrobe and big chest of drawers...I love clothes and since hitting 40 and earning what I feel is a good salary no longer really stress about indulging this..I have to look smart for work and attend a fair few functions. I think I'm a pretty canny shopper so have what I feel is good quality stuff but generally always bought in the sale or with some kind of discount. My best friend is by necessity far more frugal but I have an open wardrobe policy with her and she can pretty much borrow anything she needs if she has an event/party etc coming up and I often have a clear out and pass on stuff still in very good nick to her and other friends. I've probably got about 20+ pairs of shoes/boots but have several of these in work because of the above and have got them to cover every weather eventuality a I try to walk everywhere - and so also have "proper" waterproof and winter coats too. I've learnt from my husband and bitter soaked to the skin experienced to do my research when it comes to outerwear and try to get the best I can afford that will last a good several years.

I would love a dressing room - I'd even share it with my husband Grin I've always wanted one of those utterly ludicrous Hollywood lightbulbs-all-the-way-round mirrors.

chanie44 · 12/09/2017 08:11

I have the equivalent of a two door rail plus two chests of drawers and a drawer under the bed. Over the last few years, I have pretty much replaced my wardrobe and I regularly wear about 80% of it, because I buy stuff that suits me and i will enjoy wearing.

Floisme · 12/09/2017 08:42

I love having lots of clothes, love it. I had very few when I was growing up and most of what I did have were hand-downs from my sister. Capsule wardrobes hold no interest whatsoever.

I have a two-door wardrobe for everyday, another large one for very special vintage clothes and then two large overhead cupboards, one for anything that's out of season (cashmere in the summer etc) and a second for anything that I'm bored with but that still fits, suits and is in good condition. The things in there get recycled over time - at the moment I'm going through the velvet Smile

I also have a lot of books. No-one ever suggests I should declutter them.

Ponks · 12/09/2017 08:43

I have far too much stuff yet never have anything that seems right. I have a four door wardrobe plus chest of drawers plus coat cupboard but wear less than half of it after putting on weight. Even when I fit the clothes I never feel nicely dressed, I always feel that I get something wrong eg the shoes or coat.

Floisme · 12/09/2017 08:44

Oh and there's another cupboard downstairs for coats but we all share that.

Crispsheets · 12/09/2017 08:45

I'm planning to turn 4th bedroom into a dressing room...mainly because I like choosing what to wear in private.
I declutter regularly but still have over 100 tops and 30 pairs of trousers. And about 30 pairs of shoes. I never wear dresses or skirts.

AnnabelleLecter · 12/09/2017 09:30

Two wardrobes and two sets of drawers. Full enough to have choices for every eventuality but not bursting at the seems.
I want some new bits and pieces this Autumn so a mini clear out is imminent.

OCSockOrphanage · 12/09/2017 09:41

Firmly in the hoarders' corner. I have two (badly planned) two-door hanging wardrobes and a chest of drawers, plus a camphor chest where out-of-season/favour woollens are stored. One wardrobe is for things in current wear; the other is for more formal or dressy things that get worn less, and non-seasonal garments. There are small drawers for scarves and underwear, socks etc and large ones for T-shirts and jumpers. I wear or like all of it with a few oddments that are kept 'just in case'.

I, too, have a lot of books. Plus there's shared hall hanging space for miscellaneous jackets (most not mine) and men's outdoor shoes.

Dowser · 12/09/2017 11:07

I have floor to ceiling wardrobes in bedroom. About 11 feet by 7 that's full.
I have 2 pretty Vera Bradley duffle bags under the bed. Full of tops.
We share a walk in closet next door. That's 11.6feet by 7 and 5 by 7 .
Also full. Not all clothes.
Grandsons floor to ceiling wardrobe about 10 by 7 feet. Full. Holds a lot of my shoes. Again not all clothes.
End bedroom . l floor to ceiling wardrobe about 7 by 7 . Full not all clothes but has a rail of coats and a rail of good summer dresses.
In loft are most of my winter boots and winter dresses.

I declutter regularly.

Dowser · 12/09/2017 11:12

Last winter I donated 60 dresses to a charity shop, all in excellent condition. It honestly didnt make a dint in my collection.
I only seem to wear dresses now.
I have loads of tops and trousers that I just don't wear and jumpers too.
They need to go don't they.

I need to keep just 2-3 pairs and a couple of tops. Even if just when I go to the osteopath.

silkpyjamasallday · 12/09/2017 11:19

I have a double wardrobe with 4 drawers inside totally stuffed, a chest of drawers totally stuffed, three big boxes of handbags and scarves/hats on top of the wardrobe and loads of stuff floating around in various piles to be put away all over the house as I am not great at keeping up with the laundry. I also put six binbags of clothes that my parents brought from my old bedroom in the attic at the weekend as I was sick of the clutter and couldn't be bothered to sort through them Blush then I have several baskets and trunks of shoes although I share these with DP. He has even more clothes than I do, but we both still have things we've had since we were young teens. Neither of us are good at getting rid of stuff as I always end up regretting it. DPs knitwear has all been destroyed by moths this summer though, so that's 20 odd jumpers to go to the recycling.

I like having a rummage and pulling out something I haven't worn for a while, it's like shopping your own 'edit' of things everyday and I don't get bored so easily. I have multiple versions of things I like such as kimonos which really change up a plain jeans and tshirt outfit.

WomblingThree · 12/09/2017 12:12

I've got a double wardrobe, but that also houses DH and DS's suits and DD's "best" dresses. I've also got two tall, narrow 5 drawer chests, but I only half fill the drawers so things don't get squashed. Shoes and boots live in the bottom of the wardrobe.

I've lost weight recently so I had a massive clear out last week and sent two huge binliners stuffed with clothes to the clothing bank. I've streamlined my wardrobe to "things I actually like wearing" instead of things I take out the drawer and then put back unworn.

I also made a list of things I actually needed before I went shopping, rather than just buying another ten black tops and returning them Blush

TeaAddict235 · 12/09/2017 15:17

I have a 2 door wardrobe and one drawer from DH's chest of drawers. I need my own chest of drawers. Shoes are downstairs in the lobby or laundry room (wellies etc &boots that I'm hiding from DH )
I do have a brown boot weakness Blush got about 8 pairs but only 1 pair of legs

We have a family closet and sometimes it can get a bit hectic choosing clothes with DC running about between our legs ("playing rats mummy!" Hmm), but we go fed up of hearing DS 1 jumping down from his chest of drawers at bedtime, so we turned a guest room into a closet (no other furniture in there now) and now no one has a wardrobe or chest of drawers in their bedroom. Boys eh!
