I need to look "Yachty"

CantStandMeow · 11/09/2017 11:33

S&B folks I need your help! Long story short is I'm working at a boat show for a yacht company and need to look "yachty" their words not mine.

I need clear soled trainers (or I'm not allowed on the boats!) A white blouse and some boaty type trousers in grey/black. Coat wise I need to be warm as it's outside and appropriately stylish.

They like all owners and clients to think all staff are avid sailors so I need to fake it without spending much money as I'm temping.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be hugely greatful!

Well this guy just got a new yacht and is sporting some style. Maybe you could take some tips from him? Grin

Buy some fabric, make a mast and strap it to your back??

LittleMissMankyPants · 11/09/2017 11:44

I would have thought a stripy Breton top would be more suitable than a white shirt. Just look at Duchess of Cambridge every time she goes to a boaty place!!

Capri pants, maybe a navy blazer if you have / can afford one.

Is this job actually going to be paying you enough to warrant buying an outfit?

CantStandMeow · 11/09/2017 11:51

Breton top is a no go it's white blouse. Which is weird.

I think the mast look would be preferable to the just got rich scally ensemble Grin

How much is this paying?

If they want clear shoes then they're looking for the actual yacht uniform; rather than a stylish take on it; so it'd be a sailing shirt, grey sailing trousers (usually, for women), maybe a scarf in the yacht colour and the special trainers. Mine cost me about £300 altogether I think, but I got some things in the sale - it's late season now so a lot of the sales are finished or the good stuff has gone.

If it's min wage; I'd ask if it's possible to wear smart clothes and borrow shoes.

SlugKiller · 11/09/2017 11:52

Have a look on Crewe website

rainbowjoy · 11/09/2017 11:55

Musto clothing, striped Breton / sweatshirt, blue chinos, deck shoes is the clone choice of clothing for any "boat" ladies I have seen in various marinas on the Solent. If you are working at Southampton it will be chilly as on the water obviously if you are outside. Depending on what you are actually doing I'm surprised you haven't been given or lent any promo clothing for whoever you are working for. I would ask. If you are working for the whole 2 weeks you are going to need a few changes of outfit.

CantStandMeow · 11/09/2017 11:57

The person who I'm working with wears sketchers that look like deck shoes apparently so it's just the first glance look that I need.

A general not sticking out like a sore thumb kind of outfit! I'm trying to blag a branded jacket but they only provide clothing for the men so can't wangle anything else sadly.

What?! How are they justifying that?!

timeisnotaline · 11/09/2017 11:58

If uniform is going to cost a substantial proportion of your wages you should think again about the job, and explain to them if it's not worth your time, rather than suck it up and take home a couple pounds an hour.

RTKangaMummy · 11/09/2017 11:59

I would go with navy & white with red highlights

But if you are to look like you go on Yacht for racing sort of thing then a bright yellow coat will keep you warm and dry, that is what my little bro wears when he is racing anyway, so more practical than stylist

Are you supposed to be dressed like a crew member or are you sort of leisure yacht where you don't do any manual work (iyswim) but have drinks and nibbles?

RTKangaMummy · 11/09/2017 12:01

Massive X posted

Could you look at photos from last year boat show to see what they wore last year?

scaryclown · 11/09/2017 12:03

Yellow rubbery mac from sports direct...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/09/2017 12:03

What are clear soled shoes?

BackieJerkhart · 11/09/2017 12:03

But he wears it so well, no? Grin

JaneJeffer · 11/09/2017 12:05

Grin Backie

Just had a google for yacht uniforms. Here's a couple of pictures. They seem to wear chinos and polo shirts mostly although there's a lot of thigh length skirts which don't seem very practical to me!

Only provide uniform for the men? Erm.. good luck defending that sexist policy Hmm

CantStandMeow · 11/09/2017 12:08

From what I've seen, the people who buy the yachts are the sort of people who employ full time staff to maintain them and crew them. Or they race them part of the year and swank around loving life.

So I just need to look like I'd know what to do if I went out for a jolly. I'm probably not explaining very well but I'm trying not to give too many details that might make the company identifiable.

I've worked for them before in the office and they're a great company. I just don't hang around in the marina in my free time and I work with mostly men. (Hence the providing for men not women)

TKmaxx has a lot of crew company gear. Hard to get more yachty than that.

Chestervase1 · 11/09/2017 12:11

I thought you meant a different kind of "yachting" 🙈

CantStandMeow · 11/09/2017 12:12

Thank you for all the links Flowers

I kept finding actual on the yacht in the sea look, think captain Birdseye Shock

CantStandMeow · 11/09/2017 12:13

Dare I ask what the other kind of "Yachting Is?!

timeisnotaline · 11/09/2017 12:13

I hadn't read the part where they only provide uniform for the men! Update your temp agency, and request a small mans uniform. If they say that's not cool, quit, then Tweet and Facebook them about their policy. Or ask your friends to. I will!

Oogle · 11/09/2017 12:16

Is it Southampton? If so, I'll see you there! Grin

Branded jacket should be provided, I provide all of my staff with branded clothing. Not that it surprises me that they are only providing for men, this industry is notorious for this type of sexist shit. I'm exhibiting on land but it will be flipping cold, even if it's a beautiful day to be honest so try for a fleece-lined jacket. I have a mix of jackets from Result, Regatta, Gill and Musto.

Sebago shoes are comfy and light-soled. So long as it's not a dark sole, you should be fine. They just don't want them decks marked.

Trousers, if they're not providing then I'd just go for trousers you like and will wear again. I will be in skinny black trousers but chinos are a popular choice.

When a company specify a "uniform" they should provide that uniform IMO.
