How do I become someone who doesn't need to wash my hair everyday?

I'd love not to have to do this but I really really can't see a way out.....

I have thick hair which has an annoying wave. Currently in a sort of layered bob with fringe (probably mumsy according to the bob thread).

Every morning I wash, blow dry and sometimes run straighteners through if I cba. Sometimes I scrunch and it goes curly. I did do curly girl for a bit but then gave up.

If I leave it for 2 days between washes then it looks like an oil slick and I have to shampoo it twice to cut through the grease.

Not sure what to do? Dry shampoo? Brazilian blow dry?? I'm back at work this week and would love to save time in the morning but also look groomed. Is this possible?

I will try to attach a pic

I do every 2 days and it's never quite as nice on day 2 but tbh I just can't be bothered. Bit of talc (cheat's dry shampoo) to matt any shiny bits if needed and maybe a quick re-run through with the straighteners if it's kinked again.

Or the classic day 2 up-do but that's harder with a bob...

Queenofthedrivensnow · 02/09/2017 18:15

Marking place because I am the same though my hair is much longer.

Dry shampoo works much better if you blitz your hair with it before you go to bed. You will wake up to dry hair but the tell take white powder has gone

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/09/2017 18:18

I shall try that tip Queen Smile

Bluebiscuits · 02/09/2017 18:20

I find I can go longer between washes if I shampoo, condition, and then shampoo the roots again at the end. Also rinsing really well and using a cleansing shampoo which doesn't leave a residue helps. Currently using treseme cleanse and replenish.

EllaHen · 02/09/2017 18:24

I stopped using conditioner. Now I can go about 4 days. So liberating.

ChickenBhuna · 02/09/2017 18:24

Use tgel shampoo. It's expensive but worth it.

sevillecrush · 02/09/2017 18:25

I have long thick hair which I wash once a week. When I wash it, I do a really thorough washing, lots of scalp massage and three separate lathers. I let it air dry and tie it back into an updo every day (I keep it in a loose ponytail in bed as well). Sometimes I rinse just the front section to freshen it up, but I don't bother doing a full hair wash as it doesn't show when I've clipped it up.

Skyllo30 · 02/09/2017 18:28

Can you tie it back the second day? That's the only way I get 2 days out of my hair. Mine is very fine and falls out easily so washing less has really helped it.

lionsleepstonight · 02/09/2017 19:57

I try and get a week out of a hair wash. I find I can only do this if I've used pantene classic as other shampoos mean I get greasy roots quicker. I then use a dry shampoo after day 3 for a couple of days and then ponytail for the last day.

felicitychambers · 02/09/2017 20:03

I only wash my hair twice a week, I used to wash it every other day but since having DC I haven't often got the time for washing/drying/styling so just give it a good wash and blowdry that sees me through.

My hair normally is too clean on the first day, fine by the second, third day I use dry shampoo then wash on the 4th normally.

I swear by Batiste but wouldn't use it more than 2 days running or it will dry out your scalp. I always do two shampoos before conditioning.

Pizzaexpressreview · 02/09/2017 20:05

I only wash once a week and sometimes conditioner in between but that's because my hair is the opposite type. V dry and frizzy - it has literally never been greasy. I buy products to add "shine"!!

Escapepeas · 02/09/2017 20:07

I have very thick wavy hair and I wash every other day then use dry shampoo on the non-washing day. Tying it back at night minimises the need for too much styling on the second day.

Passthecake30 · 02/09/2017 20:08

Different shampoo and no conditioner?
I wash my hair every 2 or 3 (or 4 if I'm not going anywhere), I use Tresemme. Don't touch your hair too much, grease from your hands doesn't help.

Urglewurgle · 02/09/2017 20:29

I have to condition my hair but then it's so fine it gets greasy by the end of the day.

Another vote for shampoo, condition then shampoo again.

Then maybe dry shampoo but put it on the night before so it gets well rubbed in.

I do usually wash every day anyway but go without at the weekends now. I can't ever get it to look as good when it's not been freshly washed but it'll do if I'm not really going anywhere.

Gillybobs · 02/09/2017 20:37

I wet and shampoo my fringe only on day 2 (under the tap)...works a treat

Mamia15 · 02/09/2017 20:44

Conditioner is a culprit - either use at the very ends and rinse quickly or shampoo again afterwards....

I use dry shampoo and also having a wavy bob helps as you get away with not washing it.

sadmonkey1 · 02/09/2017 21:21

Since I stopped using rinse out conditioner I can get away with longer between washes plus my hair has been growing much faster from washing less! I just comb a bit of leave in conditioner through the lengths and ends (avoiding roots) and blow dry.

Escapepeas · 02/09/2017 21:28

I couldn't not use conditioner - my hair would be like wire wool. I use B&B sulphate free shampoo and B&B super-rich conditioner. You don't need loads and make sure you rinse it out properly by giving your scalp a good massage with your fingers as you rinse.

After washing, I use a heat protector spray and a tiny blob of styling cream, rough dry then style. As someone else said, try not to touch your hair too much during the day as this will make it greasy. Tie back loosely overnight, then a very small spray of dry conditioner along the roots at the parting and the sides, brush out and a quick restyle.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 02/09/2017 21:40

I agree with pp, I wash my hair every other day and wash my fringe in between.

NotTheCoolMum · 02/09/2017 21:45
  1. Stop using all hair products for 6 weeks - let your hair rebalance itself
  2. Rinse your hair in plain water every day for the 6 weeks to stop it going totally scary
  3. Start using shampoo again. A gentle one is best. Alberto Balsalm coconut shampoo has never let me down. Moisturising and gentle. The conditioner is fab, gentle and light.
  4. Maintain by washing once a week or so.
mineofuselessinformation · 02/09/2017 21:54

another one here who doesn't use conditioner - but I do use Argan oil shampoo, plus batiste on the days in between. I wash my hair every other day.

I tried Batiste and found it left a lot of residue and made my hair feel quite heavy. Klorane is pricier but a lot better, IMO.

Cakescakescakes · 02/09/2017 22:07

I have similar haircut. Day one I wash and blow dry and straighten. Day two I wet my fringe then blow dry it again. Then apply dry shampoo round the front hairline and fringe (I love the Klorane one) and brush through. Then run straighteners through front and front bits of hair to tidy it up.

I use the herbal essences shine shampoo in a green bottle and a good conditioner and serum on day one and a drop of serum through the ends on day two as well. I use a good clarifying shampoo every third wash which helps get rid of greasy product build up. The Redken Cleansing Cream is by far the best clarifying shampoo. Lasts forever as you use a tiny amount.
