Another Castor Oil one but - WOW! If you're hair is on the thin side, try it!

I have been losing hair for a long time now due to my bloody thyroid issues. It was quite fine but there was a lot of it, but now I can see my parting is wider, my scalp is starting to show through at the front, and my hairbrush needs cleaning every three days or so. Small handfuls of hair seemed to come out with every shower and my hair was often flat and lifeless. It was stressing me out no end.

I had been Googling ways of possibly helping and so took the plunge and bought some Castor Oil.

Last night I looked like I had stuck my head in a chip pan, it was a bugger to apply (I have just bought some sweet almond oil so I can make it a bit easier to use in future) but once I had put it in a plait it was okay.

Washing it out this morning with my usual Aussie shampoo it felt different already. Soft and healthy (I am due a cut but want to wait till next week when it's my birthday) and, bizarrely, my parting already looks a lot less sparse. I presume the extra conditioning has made the hair already there a bit thicker, which is something I didn't think would be so obviously possible especially not without making it heavy or greasy. I am generally very sceptical of these things and find results are often not a patch on what I might have hoped from reading up first, but not this time!

I am over the moon! Not sure yet if it will encourage growth too but if the success of the first application is anything to go by I might be a rival for Rapunzel by Christmas! If you're in a similar position as me, try it!

Thanks for the post and the link. I bought the castor oil ages ago and didnt know what to do with it.

Keen to give this a go - and the CO in The mascara too - good call!

I think it's a great idea to keep
This thread for as long as poss as a feedback thread.

Small Update:
I applied a mix of sweet almond and castor oil to my hair last night. It was about 30/70 - the 70 being the sweet almond as otherwise the CO is too sticky and won't spread. Today my hair is bouncy and feels healthy, although the effect of the castor oil doesn't seem as dramatic as last time. This may be as I now know what to expect, or due to the sweet almond - Im not sure!

I've used castor oil for the last two days overnight, I can't see any change in thickness or bounce. I had to double wash today and then condition to get rid of the slick - yesterday I only washed once and I had greasy hair half the day.

I did condition liberally today and it has left my hair very soft but not sure if the two are related.

I bought a smaller bottle of shampoo and am going to add some castor oil to it and see how I go. If it doesn't work only a small bottle wasted. Not sure if it will make a difference since you're meant to massage the oil into your scalp and let it soak in to work.

Will report back later in the week.

I bought a bottle of it from Holland and Barrett the other day. Was planning to slap it on and leave it on overnight like I do with PK elasticizer. But as soon as I poured some out onto my hand, I decided to just use it as a treatment whilst in the bath, as it's so sticky. My heart sank a bit as I attempted to smooth it onto my hair- it felt like chewing gum or glue. I carried on regardless then put a plastic carrier bag on (no shower cap 😂) then before I got out of the bath, I washed once with a 10p sized amount of shampoo, rinsed then washed again, leaving the shampoo on for a minute this time, before conditioning.
I didn't have high hopes but I've just dried my hair and it feels amazing: unbelievably soft and swishy, shiny. Same result as when I leave elasticizer on overnight.
Going to experiment mixing some with coconut oil soon, to see if it makes the texture nicer to apply.

It's going well mixed into my shampoo so far. My hair is soft after washing. I put a decent squirt, maybe 30-40ml (?) in my 400ml bottle of shampoo.

It will be interesting to see if I notice a difference in thickness in the next month.

LaCerbiatta · 05/09/2017 09:47

I've just tried this as well. Got castor oil from Holland and Barrett and diluted maybe 80:20 with argan oil (mostly castor oil).

As it's so thick I decided to apply with a brush (the one I use for dying hair). It was very easy to put on the scalp but not so much on the lengths.

Hair today definitely looks thicker near the roots but not so much conditioned all over. Maybe I need to spread better to the ends.

Can castor oil, coconut oil and almond oil be used on hair that has semi permanent colour on it?

Auldspinster · 05/09/2017 14:59

You can get disposable mascara wands in Primark for about a quid.

Fleanne · 05/09/2017 16:25

Glad I found this thread. My hair has been falling out in clumps :( Those who use elasticiser, do you rub it into your scalp?

LaCerbiatta · 05/09/2017 17:13

Fleanne, if your hair is falling out in clumps the oil won't help. :(
Have you had your thyroid and ferritin checked?
Could it be stress?

Fleanne · 05/09/2017 17:21

I'm seeing my GP tomorrow so will ask for blood tests. Was just hoping something else might help in the mean time! X

Just wondering how the effects were going after a few months? Just taken the plunge and ordered some castor oil so am curious to know how you’ve all got on.
