Another Castor Oil one but - WOW! If you're hair is on the thin side, try it!

I have been losing hair for a long time now due to my bloody thyroid issues. It was quite fine but there was a lot of it, but now I can see my parting is wider, my scalp is starting to show through at the front, and my hairbrush needs cleaning every three days or so. Small handfuls of hair seemed to come out with every shower and my hair was often flat and lifeless. It was stressing me out no end.

I had been Googling ways of possibly helping and so took the plunge and bought some Castor Oil.

Last night I looked like I had stuck my head in a chip pan, it was a bugger to apply (I have just bought some sweet almond oil so I can make it a bit easier to use in future) but once I had put it in a plait it was okay.

Washing it out this morning with my usual Aussie shampoo it felt different already. Soft and healthy (I am due a cut but want to wait till next week when it's my birthday) and, bizarrely, my parting already looks a lot less sparse. I presume the extra conditioning has made the hair already there a bit thicker, which is something I didn't think would be so obviously possible especially not without making it heavy or greasy. I am generally very sceptical of these things and find results are often not a patch on what I might have hoped from reading up first, but not this time!

I am over the moon! Not sure yet if it will encourage growth too but if the success of the first application is anything to go by I might be a rival for Rapunzel by Christmas! If you're in a similar position as me, try it!

Arghhhhhhhhhh, thought I had a bargain.

Yes I do recommend. I hate buying the 150ml bottles as it lasts me 2 and a bit times only.

I have recently started dyeing my hair due to grey bits and I had some highlights done. My virgin hair hated it and went like shredded wheat. I started using Elasticiser a few weeks ago and can see a difference already. I may add a few drops of essential oil (e.g. lavender or neroli) as I really like the essential oil version of Elasticiser but couldn't get it at the time in this size.

I am also a fan of taking a base oil and warming it (microwave for a few secs or oil burner) and adding essential oils then painting it on your hair, leave and wash out. When I used to do this I had the best hair of my life.

BanyanTree · 31/08/2017 15:29

Actually, I just checked and my Elasticiser is 1 litre. I definitely only paid 60 something for it in a JL shop. I remember as I went to buy the 150 ml and was gobsmacked I could buy the 1000ml for double. I think it was on offer.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 31/08/2017 15:35

1litre salon size of Elasticiser here on QVC for £64

Are you sure it was the 500ml you bought?

Bobbiepin · 31/08/2017 15:39

So do you just bung a handful on your scalp? Wash it out straight away or leave it for a while?

CallySinammon · 31/08/2017 15:52

Interesting that the second main ingredient in the Elasticiser after water is castor oil. But comes in at four times the price of unbranded castor oil.

Bobbins43 · 31/08/2017 19:25

How do you use it? How long does it stay on your hair? Is it easy to wash out?

NomDePlumeReloaded · 31/08/2017 19:36

Elasticiser works best if left on overnight but is described as a preshampoo treatment (bottle instructions say leave in midlengths & ends for 20mins and shampoo out).

I would suggest raw castor oil in overnight. You'd probably want to double shampoo in the morning. Looking at this thread, posters are recommending massaging into scalp too, not just lengths. You'd want to protect your pillow though.

So you leave it in overnight?

Anyone with rapidly thinning hair should really go and get checked by their GP though. It could be a sign of an underlying issue.

I know OP has said she has thyroid issues so I assume she has discussed the hair loss with her GP but just in case someone is reading this who is losing hair at an increased rate and is just thinking 'well, I'll whack some castor oil on it and it'll fix it". It may well do but get any underlying causes ruled out first.

Beadieeye · 31/08/2017 23:56

I'm curious about caster oil, as Elasticizer is hands down the best thing I've ever used on my hair.
Going to give it a go and hopefully save myself a lot of money

Time40 · 01/09/2017 00:06

Do you have to wear it all night? Does it go through the pillowcase and ruin the pillow?

Bringmewineandcake · 01/09/2017 00:26

Sold Grin
And thank you for the link olderandnowiser

WelshMoth · 01/09/2017 07:09

What ratio would you mix the oils?

LaCerbiatta · 01/09/2017 07:38

What's elasticizer good for?conditioning hair? Making it appear thicker?

BanyanTree · 01/09/2017 08:38

It does what it says on the tin. Infuses or boosts elastin which in turn makes hair stronger and thicker.

I am going to buy castor oil and mix it with a carrier oil and put a few drops of neroli or other oil in it and try this.

BanyanTree · 01/09/2017 08:39

That sounded terse sorry. I meant to say for once something does what it says on the tin.

IJustLostTheGame · 01/09/2017 08:46

I mix castor oil with olive oil and leave it on overnight.
I use head and shoulders conditioner on dry hair before I step in the shower.
And I have an old hair dye bottle to apply it with.
I have very fine hair.
I want a head full of heavy, swishy hair.
It's week 1, I shall update in a few weeks

CWG17 · 01/09/2017 09:00

For those who want to put some on eyelashes, I put a drop in my mascara which was starting to dry out a bit and after a week of using the mascara (you do need to be careful to let it dry after applying) I do think my lashes are longer. It wasn't the point of the exercise, I just wanted to thin out my mascara until I had time to buy a new one. Added benefit :)

CWG17 · 01/09/2017 09:04

One of the websites above also recommended putting a couple of drops of castor oil in your shampoo. Could be an interesting experiment.

Dowser · 01/09/2017 11:06

I've been taking ionic selenium for over a year now and my hair loss seems to have slowed down.
I also ytake silicolgel for stomach problems. I think that too may help
A drop of nascent iodine most days
Adrenal tablets which I did take religiously every day I just take a couple pile of times a week for maintenance.
My hair is not as thick as in my youth. I'm 65 have it highlighted every 2 months but I have no bald bits Oh and it's quite long.

Dowser · 01/09/2017 11:06

The silica in silicolgel is good for the body.
