Dermalogica

I recently went to a skin therapist as (in my late 20s) I've been experiencing some bad breakouts by my chin and along the bottom half of my face. She said she thought my breakouts were mainly hormonal/stress related. I walked away with nearly £200 worth of dermalogica products - yikes!

It's a pretty basic routine - precleanse oil, cleanser, exfoliating powder every other day and moisturiser which I guess is better then my previous routine of a vigorous wet wiping before bed.

Has anyone else found dermalogica to be any good? Is there any truth in the 'dairy causes breakouts' tale...? Anyone else got bad skin in their 20's - what's helped you?

I'm a dermalogica therapist and I highly rate the products. The routine would of been tailor made for your skin and you should see improvements within two weeks. Don't be alarmed if your skin gets worse before getting better though...it will take a while for the skin to adjust to its new routine

Flashinggreen · 29/08/2017 21:39

I use dermalogica face wash, moisturiser and eye cream, I like it.

moreismore · 29/08/2017 21:41

I used deemalogica for a few years at a similar age to you. I really liked the products and the routine made a positive difference to my skin. I stopped using them as tbh they just got too expensive now I have a mortgage and a family and much less disposable income (not meaning to make assumptions about you btw this was just my situation!) I miss the cleansers more than the moisturisers. The targeted spot-clearing stuff is really good. Enjoy your lovely products!

Love Dermatologica. Just wish I could afford to use all of the products!!

Caprianna · 29/08/2017 21:42

I have used Dermalogica products for many years and love it. I have good skin. I love dermalogica because it feels nice on my skin not sure it makes a difference to how my skin looks to be honest. I think good skin is diet, sleep/ lack of stress and genetics.

coffeecow · 29/08/2017 21:43

@Barbie1 I've been using the products for nearly a month now and it definitely got worse before it got better!! It seems to have improved a bit since though. I went back the other day for another appointment and had an express facial and some extraction and I've now broken out a bit again - but that could also be related to time of the month etc!

I'm 42, always had acne problems from teenage years, had all the systemic treatments including roaccutane. The resurfacing cleanser I use is really good, but I only use it once a day. But it is amazingly pricey.

coffeecow · 29/08/2017 21:46

@Flashinggreen Do you use the cleanser at night? The cynic in me does wonder if using it in the morning is just a ploy to make you use it up twice as fast!

I use Dermalogica, have done for about 12 years. The pre cleanse oil doesn't suit me, I use special cleansing gel, skin prep rub and either active moist or skin smoothing moisturiser. I LOVE their hydroblur and there was a lovely one I used on my lips but they changed its name!

Definitely worth the extra expense, as I get stressy and hormonal spots too.

pp2017 · 29/08/2017 21:51

I love dermalogica but I find that every day is just too much for my skin....

Never had bad skin as a kid/teenager, all only started in my 30s 😏

I use precleanse wipes to remove makeup every day that I wear it, special cleansing gel once a week (ish) and alternate thermoexfoliate and clay mask each week.

I LOVE overnight repair serum but only once every 3/4 weeks immediately following dermal rolling

I swear by drinking 1-2 litres of water a day - I've just been on holiday and my water intake fell by the wayside, que hairline and chin breakout 😡

OhHolyJesus · 29/08/2017 21:52

Long term dermalogica user and I love the microfoliant cleanser but can't afford it now I'm a SAHP.

You can buy from Pure Beauty and get samples for free when you order so a good way to try out the products as a one off.

If I had the cash I'd buy the lot. It's the best stuff I've ever used as I'm a product whore Grin

pp2017 · 29/08/2017 21:52

But I do use skin perfect primer every day instead of foundation!! 🙈

Ok I probably keep Dermalogica in business 😂

coffeecow · 29/08/2017 21:55

@pp2017 Haha seems you might do 🙈 I got some samples of the hydroblur and it felt amazing but didn't give me much cover (maybe when my current breakout dies down I'll try again!)

@Olivo Oooh interesting - did you find the pre cleanse oil was too ...oily? Or just didn't fit into the routine? It does feel strange rubbing oil directly onto my already over oily face!

Flashinggreen · 29/08/2017 21:58

I use the face wash in the shower in the morning. I'm very naughty and don't cleanse at night usually. But I don't wear make up daily.

I had a sample of the special cleansing gel and that is gentler and I could use that if I cleansed twice a day.

I'm too scared to have the full face mapping and how damaged my skin really is..

And how much I would need to spend to get everything they suggest.

coffeecow · 29/08/2017 22:04

@Flashinggreen Yes I definitely wonder if ignorance is bliss! I figure if I went the full whack this once and got everything she recommended that I would commit to it for as long as it takes to run out of product (apparently the cleanser should last me six months which actually makes it a bit of a bargain really if it does what it says on the tin!) and see if I've had any improvement then choose which products I want to keep going with from there.

@coffeecow

Hydra blur wasn't enough for me, but skin perfect primer finished with a light/translucent pressed powder is good enough for work....

(I layer up with M.A.C on special occasions 😆)

Ditsy1980 · 29/08/2017 23:43

I love it! And would recommend. I use the special cleansing gel, daily microfoliant (although I only use twice a week not daily), skin smoothing moisturiser and active moist. I didn't like the toner I tried.
I liked it as when I had the face mapping the consultant said I had good skin humble brag and didn't try to over-sell to me.

Flashinggreen · 30/08/2017 05:11

I'm very freckles blessed Hmm, so I've always thought the skin mapping does that showing up how sun damaged you are. Making your whole face look like a freckle...but I'm now not sure that's right. Please advise.

As well as being prone to oily skin and spots as I've got older my skin is getting more sensitive. I think I've used so much salicilic acid on my face I only have to use a product with it in once and my chin goes bright red and sore.

Tempted to enquirer at my local salon re mapping. @Barbie1 what does it entail?

troodiedoo · 30/08/2017 05:19

Love their products, their vitamin masque is amazing. They are very rich though, I wouldn't use them everyday. I don't think fancy cleansers are necessary. It's only on your face for 20 seconds.

Incidentally soap and glory peaches and clean is the best cleanser I have ever used.

Flashinggreen · 30/08/2017 05:59

I think it totally depends on your skin type what brand suits. I think how it feels and smells is important.

I used an environ moisturiser after recommendation from a therapist and it smelt revolting and wasn't moisturising enough. I needed to put oil with it as well she said. I need a simple regime or it's just a waste of money, I won't use it.

mintmagnummm · 30/08/2017 08:01

I have used their ultracalming cleanser for years and I swear by it! I couldn't use the precleanse or microfoliant though as my skin is highly reactive. I like active moist too but can't use it all the time.

Olivo · 30/08/2017 10:18

Yes coffeecow, it felt too oily. I have traditional oily t- zone, and I found it gave me pimples around my nose.

Only started with the skin smoothing when I hit 40, as my skin felt a bit drier.

Olivo · 30/08/2017 10:20

Interesting troodie, I tried some peaches and clean but it felt much too heavy.

It took me years and years to settle on something that suited me. I don't wear make up, so don't mind paying a bit more for decent skin products at the moment.

troodiedoo · 30/08/2017 10:29

Fair play Olivo. It's definitely worth any price if you find a product that suits. Your face is on display all the time so worth investing in.

This has reminded me how much I loved the micro foliant, think a splurge is in order.
