The holy grail - comfortable, stylish shoes?

YogiYoni · 29/08/2017 21:09

Please help! Back to work (teaching) next week and I'm having my annual 'WTF do I wear on my feet?' crisis.

My hand is hovering worryingly close to these but I know (I KNOW!) they're not stylish really. Can anyone help? I need shoes that are comfy enough to wear all day (standing for most of it, walking across a large site for the rest), stylish enough to make me smile and ideally under £75. I'm thinking navy, ruby or black, but could be swayed...

Funny, MrsS, I find Geox shoes last for ages ( just taken a pair of their sandals on their fourth hard-walking holiday) but M and S don't last me well at all. I guess we all have different gaits or something!

jennielou75 · 30/08/2017 21:15

I'm in primary so can get away with different styles as long as they are flat! I bought these as my back to school boots for this year! They are incredibly comfy unlike a pair of more sensible Dr Martens I have that are too tight. We have a very relaxed dress code!

I second the recommendation for Gabor shoes. John Lewis stocks them.

WildwestWind · 30/08/2017 21:38

I work in a secondary school and have worn hamble oaks for a couple of years. Last year I bought a pair of Gabor shoes and my feet were definitely less achy at the end of the day. They will definitely last another winter but I've just bought a pair of brogues from M&S that caught my eye. They are more chunky than the Clarks ones

If you were to ask me to select a pair of shoes for a 50-something, spinster English teacher, I would have picked those Hotter shoes, OP!

I assume that is not the look for which you are going! Grin

BluebellGal · 30/08/2017 21:55

Wildwestwind- I love those brogues! Did you got for oxblood? Gorgeous and stylish

WildwestWind · 30/08/2017 22:06

bluebellgal yes got the oxblood and they are gorgeous!

traviata · 30/08/2017 22:07

ChickenVindaloo2 wtf?
do unmarried women wear different shoes?
and what do you mean about 50-something? if you aren't already over 50, don't you want to get there one day?

Confitdecanard · 30/08/2017 22:18

Another secondary school teacher here. I have just bought these (probably considered frumpy by many) but I tend to wear black or navy so I thought these would go with both. Still awaiting delivery so no idea if they are comfy! www.shoeaholics.com/brands/women/carvela-kurt-geiger/anthony-wine-patent-carvela-kurt-geiger

If you're into broguey shoes, I would highly recommend the Doc Martin take-offs by Shoezone. Cheap as chips, and the most comfortable and practical shoes ever! I walk miles in mine. I've got a pair of Hamble Oaks and they don't come close for comfort to the Shoezones.

dementedma · 30/08/2017 22:30

Love those M and S oxblood brogues but they say wide fit and I have very narrow feet...

weasle · 31/08/2017 00:54

Ooo this the the thread for me!
I'm on my feet all day, wear dresses and have had several pairs of Hotters which I think are fabulous. However in the last year they seem to have dropped all their stylish heels and be just frumpy. I really like the Hotters in the OP and I might buy them!

Last year I had some nude heeled Clark's which were wonderful but discontinued.
I have some Clark's brogues but don't feel smart enough in them in a dress.

MaisyPops · 31/08/2017 08:50

I teach secondary in a school with a pretty strict dress code. They need to be proper shoes. No open toes, sandals, etc
And some people think uniforms don't apply to teachers Grin

No sandals seems harsh to me. I wear pencil skirts and tops / cropped trousers and tops (blazer most days) but in the summer love trading my closed shoes for sandals.

olderandnowiser · 31/08/2017 08:58

Another vote for russell and bromley. They are dear but their shoes are the only ones I have ever worn and have been perfectly comfortable from day 1.

I too am on my feet all day at work.

YogiYoni · 31/08/2017 09:28

Yes, @Maisy, I can't say I agree with the policy, but I need to stick to it Grin

Of course yogi

I wear a blazer almost every day but feel a bit Hmm at some schools near me who insist that staff wear a jacket.

Does your school insist on business dress for staff by any chance?

Carnt · 31/08/2017 09:42

Orla Kiely for Clarks shoes. She only did 2 years of collaboration with Clarks - finishing 2 years ago, but there's loads of her shoes (new) available on eBay. So comfy - lovely Clarks cushioning - but also retro-cool. I've a secret wardrobe with a little stash that my partner has not found yet Hmm

NotMeNoNo · 31/08/2017 09:48

They aren't cheap but Ecco (while we're talking comfort) brought out a range of smart shoes with "hidden comfort" apparently.

Thegiantofillinois · 31/08/2017 09:56

I love my hambles, as do my teenagers, but for me, they don't go with all my outfit t s. I'm heading g towards 40, so what looked quirky ten years ago is now starting to look a bit frumpy, so I need to ve careful. Every year i tell myself I'll buy lower shoes, but still end up with impracticable highness that cripple my knees.

I like Hamble Oaks and they ARE great for coming in a range of widths and colours BUT they make me walk like a duck!

I don't think I could walk miles in them.

Thegiantofillinois · 31/08/2017 12:40

M and s footglove can be comfy too. weeps for the skyscrapers from trendy shops I used to wear

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2017 16:25

I really like the Taylor Palm shoes but I want them in tan, and they don't exist. :(

dementedma · 31/08/2017 19:30

OMG..I was just talking to myself about this thread and mentioned "Doc Martens" and DS (15) said "What are Doc Martens?" Shock

When i was suitably horrified he said "mum, I don't anything about fashion. My style is George at Asda!"
