Scrunchielass are you 14 in 1992?

50ShadesOfEarlGrey · 29/08/2017 16:51

I live in hope that banana clips will come back into fashion, my fine hair looked lovely in those, and it would hold every bit in place. Also the round plastic clips that had a hinge and went round a pony tail brilliantly. Oh well, that's progress.....

Mrscropley · 29/08/2017 16:55

Ethically farmed?? Doubtful there is such a thing. .

Fekko · 29/08/2017 16:55

Mink? Tortoise shell? No thanks!

I use the covered bands, clips or those long clips like scissors,". Usually it's a pen twisted around and shoved in the knot. I sometimes use a really fine Alice band.

Scrunched are a bit 80s

My hair drives me nuts!

Fekko · 29/08/2017 16:57

Scrunchielass is that your hair? I'm very jealous.

TakeAnadin · 29/08/2017 17:03

I use snow leopard and eland fur bobbles- ha-ha ! My slaves skin them for me.

Not really. I use hair grips.

scrunchielass · 29/08/2017 17:08
Grin I am most definitely nearly 47. I was doing bad things with Sun In and Henna when I was 14. Yes, that's my hair and that pic was taken this morning by my son as I reading this thread.
Flobulous · 29/08/2017 17:08

Scrunchies remind of that episode of SATC where Carrie and her boyfriend having a massive fallout because she claimed only hicks from Ohio (or somewhere) wore them and he claimed otherwise.

To me they're very dated indeed but maybe for teens who are full into the 90s revival they may have niche appeal.

And can I just add my 'Mink? WTF?' to the general chorus. Bloody foul.

Flobulous · 29/08/2017 17:11

Personally I use a plain black hair bobbin. Old school and unobtrusive.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/08/2017 17:17

I think it looks a bit naff to have your hair tied up with anything brightly coloured or obvious looking. Just a clear or hair coloured elastic for me.

I always think Scrunchies look like you've tied your hair up with a pair of knickers.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/08/2017 17:23

A bit off topic, but the trend last winter for woolly hats with a fur bobble on top? Most of those were real fur, a lot of people didn't even realise when they bought it as they weren't particularly expensive. Fur is actually tragically cheap.

It's definitely worth checking the label!

terrylene · 29/08/2017 17:24

Scruchielass - lovely hair.

I use a chenille scrunchy in mine to keep it up. It is wild and woolly and anything else looks ridiculous and likely to tear it all out.

Fekko · 29/08/2017 17:24

Wasn't there some actually sold as synthetic but were real fur (poor critters from China)?

Flobulous · 29/08/2017 17:26

Yes the trim of hoods etc. isn't always declared as fur. I just avoid it all.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/08/2017 17:36

I just Googled that Fekko. You're right, some garments with (what was claimed to be) faux fur trims were tested. The results showed real fur in most cases; rabbit, dog, raccoon and mink.Shock

These weren't just random online sellers either, they were found in high street stores.

TheHoundsofLove · 29/08/2017 17:51

Yes - I was horrified by a programme recently that tested 'fake fur' items and found a couple in big high street stores (I was truly shocked) - some fake fur gloves were found to be rabbit and the trim of a hood was actually fox. As a result, I would never buy even fake fur now. Horrific!

TheHoundsofLove · 29/08/2017 17:54

In fairness, they did say that the stores had been equally horrified and have since ceased dealing with those labels, but I just wouldn't want to risk it.

strawberryblondebint · 29/08/2017 17:57

These... I always have one around my wrist. Black blue brown beige and green cover all bases. They hold mu thick curly hair and I can do a quick bun with them or a messy up do. Probably not stylish. I care not. I was annoyed though that I had inadvertently forgotten to remove one in my wedding photos and no one noticed. Grrrrr. Lovely pic of our hands together and a whopping great brown one on my wrist.

MineKraftCheese · 29/08/2017 20:31

Scrunchies are definitely fashionable but I think you have to look quite young/stylish in the rest of your look to get away with it and not look dated.

I love scrunchies still wear them at 56 lol

Eminybob · 30/08/2017 09:35

I remember my favourite scrunchie from the 90's, it was a maroon velvet one from the body shop. When the body shop sold good stuff.
I used to put my hair up in a bun with the scrunchie, but my hair is so fine and barely there that all you could see was scrunchie!

Eminybob · 30/08/2017 09:38

Oh and when I first started working in my current job, you could order a corporate scrunchie from the uniform shop. It was in the same God awful patterned material of the shirts and even had the company logo on it.
This was only 14 years ago so no excuse! They don't do them anymore, but you can order a scarf if you want to tie that artfully around your hair.

MaybeDoctor · 30/08/2017 09:44

I was shopping for a ski-jacket last year and refused to consider one that had a real fur trim. Interestingly, the young shop staff seemed surprised that this was an issue for me. I wonder if the awareness of anti-fur feeling has gone away due to it not being around for so long?

shamoffour · 30/08/2017 09:51

Yep scrunchies are definitely having a revival buts as pp said you have to be quite cool and trendy to pull them off I think.
I use a black plain elastic hair bobble or a pair of knickers when I do my makeup in the morning.

WomblingThree · 30/08/2017 10:11

My 17 year old always wears scrunchies. She's got a set of velvet ones that are identical to the ones I wore in the 90s.

I use Primark popbands, Primark invisibobbles, or plain stretchy black elastic without the metal. When my hair was very long I used Linzi-clips. They were the only thing that would hold it all day.
