Necklines for the large of nork

NC4now · 27/08/2017 10:53

I'm seeing lots of skirts and culottes with polo neck jumpers around for Autumn. I love the look but as a booby size 14, I've always thought high necklines are out as they create a vast plane of bosom.
I think I saw that on Trinny and Susannah 20 years ago

Thoughts?

Would a long necklace to break it up work? Or is there another type of top that looks smart with short skirts and tights for autumn? I don't really want to go down the cardi route as it's a bit casual for work.

I am (very!!) large of nork and for decades embraced T&S advice re showing skin. Unfortunately the skin is rather less attractive now so I've started to wear higher necks in autum/winter. In warmer months I do still tend to wear more open necks. I wear very long necklaces - a chain with a single pendant so it hangs in a v, rather than a decorative chain. But it must properly clear the chest ime. If it wafts about in the air as it hangs over the ledge, it looks weird. I have to watch the length of visitor lanyards for the same reason. I also wear longish scarves sometimes, again knotted quite low.

MulhuddartDrive · 27/08/2017 19:28

I am the proud owner of gg's so I fear the polo neck. I find boat or slash necks or a lowish but not scooped round neck much more flattering than v-necks. I've never got the hang of long necklaces but they can look great.

Laiste · 27/08/2017 19:34

GGs here too. The depth of the neckline is the first thing i look at on a top and wont buy anything which falls more than a cm or two above to top of the cup of my bra.

Acres and acres of boob shelf look matronly in the extreme IMO and are so aging. Visually gives the look that your boobs are round your navel as well. Long necklaces bouncing around on there ditto i'm afraid. (usually with said necklace separating after 10 seconds of wear and spending the day falling over the outside of one boob).

I would LOVE to wear a high round neck shift dress or a chic polo neck :( It's useless.

BretonCat · 27/08/2017 20:23

Drapery boat neck, cowl neck or a shirt with a few buttons open to give a deep, narrow v (F Cup).

Although I think polo necks look fine too, with a bra with a good shape.

With necklines, I think it's more about how long your neck is than how big your bust is.

squoosh · 27/08/2017 20:29

I wouldn't go near a polo neck. They are no friend to those who are big of tit or stumpy of neck. Same goes for skater dresses, they're beloved by so many but create an expanse of Hattie Jacques bosom that is just so unflattering.

NC4now · 27/08/2017 20:32

I do have a very long neck and defined jawline, thankfully. It's quite forgiving.
I think you're right though - stick to scoop, v or cowl necks. I struggle with shirts because I'm a 34FF so they either gape at the front or have acres of spare fabric flapping round the back.
Has anyone found a good make?
Sometimes I just sew the front up behind the buttons if the shirt has a bit of stretch.

Boat, cowl or shallow v neck for me.

Polo necks give me a boob-shelf.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/08/2017 21:27

I, too, have a pair of GG/H. I wear whatever I like, that's comfy. If I had to choose, a V-neck looks the best. If I want to wear a high neck, I bloody well will.

The only decent shirts are loose or M and S with the no-gape buttons.

PookieSnackenberger · 27/08/2017 21:55

E cup here and I flip the bird at all the T&S 'rules'

I wear very fine polo necks under fitted suits and simple sleeveless knitwear and my favourite neckline is a slash/boat neck. I detest scoop necks - I think they're really unflattering but do wear longline t-shirts with deep v's.

I think the most important thing is a really well fitting bra with a good shape. Also, straps adjusted short enough not left long and droopy.

Fakingit36 · 28/08/2017 02:39

G cup here and haven't worn a shirt with buttons for years despite liking them - because of the dreaded gape and tug. Recently discovered a shirt that Hugo boss does - no buttons, flat in the front but with discreet zippers up the sides. Genius . Comes in a bunch of colors. Pricey in shops but I think they make them every season so my husband scored me one on eBay (yes he's the best). I read that the characters in the Good Wife often wear these particular shirts on the show. Also, very good quality and no need to iron.

Elledorado · 28/08/2017 04:18

I have a short neck, wide shoulders and medium sized boobs. I look terrible in high necklines. To the point where if I find a great dress or top with a high neck, I will have the neckline lowered to a wide scoop, slash neck or deep vee. I agree that it's less about the size of boob tbh.

Petalflowers · 28/08/2017 04:39

Nc4 - I remember that Advice from T and S also. Being more flat chest d, I also learnt I should coverup, and v necks make me look frumpy..

Perhaps adopt the colours of the seasons in the styles that suit you to look fashionable.

KatharinaRosalie · 28/08/2017 07:16

I find cowl necks very flattering and have to agree with the style rules - I look horrible in high cut necks. Every now and then I get lured in by some gorgeous dress or top, but then never wear it, as I look all boob.

BiuBiu.pl has some buttoned shirts, and I can also wear Esprit when they do a certain model with gathering at bust line

countyhall · 28/08/2017 07:46

Fakingit could you give a link to the current version on the Hugo Boss site please? I have looked and can't find it and I am sure we are all furiously googling it! x

KatharinaRosalie · 28/08/2017 09:54

That's what I often wonder, why don't they make shirts with zips? Would totally solve the gaping problem.

NC4now · 28/08/2017 10:04

This one maybe?

This looks great, I won'der why other shops don't do similar. Hm, also wondering how expensive it would be to have a regular shirt altered ..

Fakingit36 · 28/08/2017 12:39

Hi guys. It's called the bashina - m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/boss-bashina-stretch-poplin-shirt-regular-petite/4014307?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=VANILLA%20LIGHT I'm in the US but isn't HB German? Surely they have it in UK? I'm just getting up - think I'll wear mine today :)

woodhill · 28/08/2017 13:57

Pain isn't it. Scoop necks ok but I have narrow shoulders. Had Boden wrap top dress on with stripes and high waist which made me look busty in photo. Have a long neck though. 30E/F cup.

Anyone managed to reduce their bust size naturally. I used to be 32b/c not so long ago but maybe an age thing

Orangebird69 · 28/08/2017 13:59

32JJ/34H here. Never high necks, apart from slash necks. They look quite good. Scoop or v neck for me.

KatharinaRosalie · 28/08/2017 15:35

Necklines are a minefield. Too high and you look matronly and all boob. But go half an inch too low and you're flashing your cleavage in a top that would look totally work-appropriate on other people..

I think I'll take one of my gapey-button shirts to tailor and ask them to put a side zip on, will report back

tentative3 · 28/08/2017 16:43

Elledorado are there any rules about the design/construction of things to have the necklines lowered? It's a fab idea and one I'd not really considered - to be honest I don't know where I'd find a decent tailor but before I risk it I wondered if there's anything to consider in seams etc?

I'd like to put out a plea for coat help! I can get away with slash necks and am a fan of an autumn/winter outfit of slash neck dress, tights and boots but struggle with a coat over the top. Undone coats, no problem but as great as I look wafting around the changing rooms it's not practical when it's freezing cold and pissing with rain. A v neck coat looks a bit odd done up over a slash neck though... I can't remember the last time I had a proper winter coat. Sigh.

woodhill · 28/08/2017 16:51

Those shirts with the mandarin collar then opening don't flatter me either

Petalflowers · 28/08/2017 17:12

www.marksandspencer.com/l/women/fuller-bust

M and S do a range of shirt for the fuller bust. Not being well endowed. (Quite the opposite), not actually tried them my self.
