Gap - what the heck?

Has anyone looked at Gap recently? They have jacked up their prices hugely (cardigans now £75, jumpers £50) and stopped using such nice materials: everything is nylon and polyester. I used to go there for 100% cotton sweaters, instead, the place is filled with nasty floral dresses and nylon mix tops.

The jeans are still good but expensive....the shop looks like a jumble sale, with various offers, showing their price point is wrong.

I think it's dying a death - so sad. it used to be one of my 'go to' shops.

I think Gap is dying a long protracted death - the world has moved on and their discounting does them no favours - why would I ever pay full price for any of their items?

squiz81 · 27/08/2017 08:49

I only ever shop in the outlet shop. I find the quality is a mixed bag. I got some dungarees which are fine but a cardigan and a t shirt for ds which haven't washed well.
I looked on their website for boys winter coats and was a bit Shock at the prices.

Floisme · 27/08/2017 08:54

They closed my branch a few years ago and I was so pissed off with them I refused to shop there online. It does sound like they're on their deathbed which is a shame. They used to be great for reasonably stylish, reasonably priced, reasonably well made basics in decent fabrics - and isn't that what we're all looking for?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/08/2017 08:56

I was just about to start a thread about this.
£ 54 for jeans?

They were £39 and then £44 a minute ago.

WTF?

Timefortea99 · 27/08/2017 08:57

Agree with the jumble sale vibe. They used to be a well set out store. I went in one a few weeks back and just walked straight out again. A total mess.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 27/08/2017 08:59

they do it and have more frequent sales that are normal gap prices

treaclesoda · 27/08/2017 08:59

I agree. Gap is a disaster these days. It used to be the best place for really good quality cotton t shirts, cardigans etc. Now it's all polyester mix stuff that's so thin you can see daylight through it.

And the full price items are extortionate, and it's baffling as to why they'd expect anyone to pay full price when they are always having sales and discounts. And their outlet shops have such a lot of stuff that is similar to the 'real' shop.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/08/2017 09:02

To be fair though that the polyester tend is all over the high street, it's just that GAP seem particularly badly affected.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 27/08/2017 09:04

Gradually more and more people have worked out that the real price for GAP stuff is 60% of the headline or "mugs' price". As they sell fewer and fewer items at the headline price they get stuck in a vicious circle In order to balance the books. It means they'll never get any new casual purchasers, and the discount purchasers are equally pissed off by the increase in the discounted price and may also desert.

treaclesoda · 27/08/2017 09:16

To be fair though that the polyester tend is all over the high street

Very true. I saw a T shirt in Superdry last week that was just a plain top with a pocket. It was 100% polyester (the soft type, if that makes sense, a T shirt rather than a top?) and it was £35.

If I want a bleached out looking polyester T shirt (and I can't quite understand why anybody would, since they go all bobbly after one wear) I'd buy it for £2 from Primark.

AlpacasPackOwls · 27/08/2017 09:20

I haven't bought anything from gap at full price for a very long time. I used to love their strong colours too but its all gone wishy washy.

beela · 27/08/2017 09:28

It used to be my favourite too, for decent quality basics.

It's all really weird shapes now. Some of their hoodies are ok, but I refuse on principle to buy anything with GAP written across it.

I like some of the baby stuff but it is very overpriced. I got some skinny jeans from M&S the other day that were almost identical to a GAP pair that I already have, except they cost £12, and fit better.

beela · 27/08/2017 09:29

Skinny jeans for me, not for a baby!

MrsChopper · 27/08/2017 09:30

I think GAP has been massively overrated for years, given the price they charge for the quality you get. It's on a downhill though, crappy on a whole new level!

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 27/08/2017 09:34

Hmm strangely I have been having a GAP renaissance after avoiding the place for years. I've recently found some really nice 100% cotton three quarter sleeve lace tops for about £27, a cotton long sleeved shirt for £12 ish down from £40 ish, cotton cropped trousers etc. My sister bought some jeans the other day that weren't marked down but came up as £9.99 at the till.
Their dresses are all too long for me but I've been able to find other things I like. Lots of lovely pajama type things.

VioletCharlotte · 27/08/2017 09:50

I don't get GAP. Their prices are so high, yet I get an email pretty much every day saying there's 30% off, 40% off, or whatever. Why not just price things realistically in the first place?

Having said that, GAP is the only place I buy my jeans (not at full price though!)

pigletpie29 · 27/08/2017 10:00

I only buy the trousers when they're reduced, they're good for work. I was in the Canary Wharf shop last week and had an odd experience with the assistants - one sidled up to me and asked if I got their emails and I said I did - he then asked me what the current offer was and I went - erm 30% off - and he said NO! It's 25% off if you spend £50 - I felt like I'd failed a test. Then a minute later a lady came over with an iPad and asked if I had shopped there before, I said yes (thinking please leave me alone!) and she asked if I had a receipt. I replied I didn't have one with me and she said 'oh well if you did you could have done our survey.' Despite that attractive prospect I wasn't tempted to dig through my bag to see if I had an old receipt.

I just bought the trousers I had in my hand and escaped after that although I intended to browse.

GeekyWombat · 27/08/2017 10:07

Gap is currently playing that stupid game of 30% / 40% / 50% off everything this weekend only yadda yadda yadda. I have their app and regularly get offers (ie every time I visit) for this plus then a 5% extra for having the app.

I'm convinced that's why they've jacked their prices up - they're expecting everyone to use the codes.

Much harder to find a bargain in there nowadays, although I did get two pairs of women's bootcut jeans reduced to £4.40 each in their outlet last time I was there. Definitely the exception rather than the rule though - and their kids clothes prices have got ridiculous!

haba · 27/08/2017 10:13

Gap used to be my staple shop for everything- work and leisure clothes, mainly because the had actual real cotton clothing. I have gap t-shirts from 20 years ago that are in better condition than the ones from two years ago! Proper thick cotton, lovely shirts, well-cut trousers, nice soft woollens. Grrrr.

haba · 27/08/2017 10:15

Ugh and the children's clothes have now succumbed to the usual British polarised pink frilly see through shit for girls, nasty slogan stuff for boys.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/08/2017 10:16

I buy quite a lot of dresses in Gap but I never pay full price. Every other day I get a code for X amount off. Last week I bought 3 dresses with 40% off.

I agree that they should just sell their clothes at a realistic price in the first place. It would make it a lot easier for everyone.

Spudlet · 27/08/2017 10:17

I find that their jeans go all saggy after you've worn them for five minutes, even sizing down to allow for 'relaxing'. I used to always buy jeans from there but I only have one pair now, and they depress me - they look great when I put them on but by lunchtime I look awful. I won't buy from there again.

NerrSnerr · 27/08/2017 10:20

I quite like the Gap outlet. I also like Baby Gap. I don't buy much new though so rarely shop there.

PowerPantsRule · 27/08/2017 13:09

Does anyone remember when a sweatshirt with 'GAP' written on it was cool? I think it was the early 1990s...yet they still do them.

My local store has turned into an 'Outlet'....it's all downhill from here.
