Show me your glasses

My glasses are so boring. I've had them for years. Plain brown oval type. Now the DC have sat on them so often it's really time for new ones and I'd love some tips on what's fashionable.

I've got quite a thin pointy face and long blonde hair if that helps.

I like the miu miu style in this link but possible a bit too out there??

Are you in or near London, OP? The Eye Company on Wardour St is incredible for when you want a change of style. The guy who owns it has a real gift for finding specs that are perfect for your face. I've been going there for almost ten years and loved every pair. Had plenty of people stop me to ask where I got my frames, too.

Sevendaysinaweek · 22/08/2017 19:54

Near London although do have an appointment with my local vision express this week already, for an eye test. Although I suppose I could just get their prescription and buy the frames elsewhere. Thanks for the tip

I love those Miu Miu ones - give them to me now! Grin

I think these are mine although in real life they're a darker grey than they look on here: www.cutlerandgross.com/shop/details/1013-humble-potato I spend a lot on my specs cos I wear them all the time - that's my excuse anyway.

I do like a cat's eye shape and I think it's very flattering as it gives your cheekbones a lift - arguably a bit Dame Edna but I'm fine with that. But next time I get some (probably next year) I'll probably look for something different as I've been wearing that shape for a few years now.

I think the fashion is drifting back towards wire frames - or wire with a strip of plastic on top (sorry can't remember the name for it). But trends change pretty slowly in glasses so I expect it'll be a few years before that really takes a grip.

BestIsWest · 22/08/2017 20:16

Love those Flo. Cat's eyes don't suit me (too square a jaw). I have these Specsavers and these purple which are maybe a bit TOO purple.

KeiraH · 22/08/2017 20:29

I LOVE the Illesteva and Chloe one from the link you ve posted! Mine are by Eye Respect.

Yes me too Flo - quite happy to spend a bit on glasses as I wear them all the time. I really like the ones you linked to.

Some other good ones on this thread. Yours are gorgeous Keira, I wonder if they would suit me. So hard to work out what works for my face, and I have no one to go glasses shopping with me! If you don't count the DC who like heart shaped glasses Hmm

Happy to help, sevendays. These are mine, they're Michel Henau.

I tend to take the approach of "this face needs glasses, I'm in your hands". I'd never before had a glasses salesperson talk about where my pupils need to be in the lens for the frames to look right, or say "that catseye shape works, but the curve needs to more closely follow your eyebrows", before coming back with a pair that does just that.

I'm a bit evangelical about the shop because it's completely changed how I look in glasses. I've had some pretty outlandish ones over the last decade, but always felt like I'm wearing them, not the other way around, if that makes sense?

I so wish I lived near London - the Eye Company looks fab. I've just spent ages looking at their website and there are so many frames I'd like to try.
I hate buying glasses because I can never find any I really like that suit me. I've got a pair of Rayban frames at the moment which are just about OK but I don't wear them with any confidence. I did get help from the assistant when I bought them but in the end there wasn't really a lot to choose from as I have a small face and a lot of frames don't seem to sit straight on my face.

NobodyKnowsMeAtAll · 23/08/2017 11:01

The manager at the opticians I go to (just a bog standard Allders) is amazing. She lets your browse, works out what you are drawn to and then gently, gently steers you towards something that suits you. She will do a "No, too square". "Not quite wide enough." "Hmm. Need something that mirrors your eyebrows - those are too flat across the top". And each time comes up with something that demonstrates what she means. I luffs her. The last 3 pairs of glasses I have bought have been from her and I have been soooo happy with them. And not got bored with them which I used to with previous opticians/my frames.

So, what I am saying is maybe you need to do like they say with haircuts. Have a look around at people, see who looks fab in their glasses and ask them where they go?

Sevendaysinaweek · 24/08/2017 10:56

deploy I've made an appointment at the eye company. Very excited.

It's not for another couple of weeks as that's the soonest I can get into central London without DC so I'll have to make my scratched squashed glasses last until then, but it'll be good to get some proper advice on what suits!

Deploycharitygoats · 25/08/2017 18:05

Fingers crossed that you find something, @Sevendaysinaweek! If you have a small/thin face, you could have a play in their vintage collection. I'm deceptively large of head (look normal until I try to find a hat Grin) so I've always had to make do with the modern collections.

Good luck!

Glitteryfrog · 25/08/2017 20:14

I've got Ted Baker finely framed ones.

Like these.

OCSockOrphanage · 25/08/2017 20:22

To keep your specs current as long as possible. you need to enlist the most stylish person in the practice and saY, QUITE FIRMLY BUT NICELY, i plan to be wearing these in 8 years. Glasses fashions don't change overnight. You will spend a bundle up front, but if you are brave, you will have two years fashion forward, plus 3 years normal mainstream and some time looking dated.

neveradullmoment99 · 25/08/2017 20:25

My glasses are by superdry. Sometimes i like them and sometimes i dont think i suit them!

I'm in the industry but have to say my favourites right now are Neubau. Stylish, light weight and eco-friendly the whole ethos is great and the style is current but will stick I think ! Btw I don't work for them. I also like vinyl factory and coco song

veneeroftheweek · 25/08/2017 20:37

Great thread. Following as I need new glasses. I'm also incredibly short sighted so my lenses are really thick which means I can't have light weight or large frames without looking like Olive from On the buses.

SallyOMalley · 25/08/2017 20:40

These are mine - French Connection from Boots about 6 months ago. They are quite large but not super-sized, and are a lovely warm tortoiseshell colour. I tried on loads of frames from top designers, but kept coming back to these. V happy with them! ignoring the fact that I had to go for varifocals because I'm an ancient bint

I've got these Cath Kidston and I love them!

Veneer - it's all about making sure you match the centres of the lenses with your pupil centre to minimise the thickness. Use a bi-aspheric lens as well, I would recommend bevel, tom Davies, paul and Joe, ck and epsrit.

IWantABlueBanana · 25/08/2017 21:04

Those miu miu ones made me instantly think of that presenter from 10 years younger. She would rock them!

I have quite boring cheap bronzy coloured kangol glasses atm. I didn't like any of the other frames and refuse to spend over 50 quid on a pair Blush

My old optician was amazing for picking out my frames, he knew just the shape and colour, was brilliant. I miss that man

Thanks goodeggs. Will check them out.

specialsubject · 26/08/2017 10:24

You can get all those patterns and colours at specsavers for considerably less.

And for the likes of me that hate patterns and colours , they have a bloke side where I can get glasses that I wear, not ones that wear me.

hmmwhatatodo · 26/08/2017 10:37

So what sort of price are we talking about for glasses from this amazing shop in London? I tried to look on their website but didn't get very far.
