Thanks Dowager I'm also a cool toned winter and would have thought that the jacket is a lovely colour. Glad it's wrong!

goatsdontshave · 17/08/2017 12:39

I disagree with MartinRhodes' chart too.

I'm a 'winter' colouring and would wear the blues described as warm in that chart but not those described as cool.

I think TheDowager has it right.

CheckingMyPrivilege · 17/08/2017 12:42

I waited too long - the jacket is out of stock now.

I'm confused.
If something is a "warm blue" what colour jewellery do you wear with it?

Or if it is a "cool red"?

Eg: warm colours (red) I wear gold, cool colours I wear silver.

Oh first world problems!!

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/08/2017 16:43

Martin - I'm a deep winter, which means I suit cool tones, too.

The clear blues on your chart (and the OP's jacket) would look great on me, but the muted blues would wash me out.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 17/08/2017 20:26

I've had a lovely afternoon skiving off housework checking out cool toned greens, reds etc. Probably have a couple of items in my wardrobe that are the wrong tone.

Sorry about the chart CheckingMyPrivilege, I hope it didn't confuse things. Somebody somewhere posted it and lots of people (like me) just took it at face value.

CheckingMyPrivilege · 17/08/2017 21:16

No worries MartinRohdes :)

I'm not tempted to get the 12 -- I have the same jacket in a 14 and it's the right size but I'm going to lose weight (need to - doctor's order!)

Ummm I think there's an underlying issue in this thread that's causing disagreements.

There are different colour wheels (and therefore cool & warm colour lists) for different purposes. I can think of 4 professions that use different colour 'wheels', and they are all correct for those purposes.

If you asked me, a watercolour painter, I'd say as it leans towards violet that the jacket is a warm blue. Cooler blues for us lean towards green (turquoise, Teal, etc).

There's also a case for saying 'I love this jacket and want to wear it. It will make me happy. I can always ramp up the 'right' makeup or add a scarf near my face to make it more flattering.'

Hairq · 20/08/2017 09:10

In terms of clothing colour seasons (e.g. CMB and HOC) it is a cool toned blue and would be on the winter palette. It's a gorgeous jacket but actually looks a bit shit on the model because her skin is slightly warm toned. See how yellow it makes her skin look in comparison?

Jmangel · 20/08/2017 09:15

I can't believe I'm engaging in this HOC talk, but that jacket would suit either a Winter or Autumn not a Spring or Summer. If I had to lean though, I would say it would suit an Autumn the best so I think it's a warm blue.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/08/2017 09:16

Again, just because a blue tends towards purple, does not make it warm-toned.

A purple that is more blue than red is cool-toned.

I still can't see the blue in the photo in the OP as anything other than cool toned.

QueenoftheAndals · 20/08/2017 09:19

It's definitely cool-toned.

The more I look at it the more it looks like a neutral, primary blue.

Karmapolicearrestthisman · 20/08/2017 09:45

Blue can't ever be warm. It's either bright or pastel.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 20/08/2017 10:06

I'm a painter as well and I was trying to compose something in my head along the lines of what Skittles said - only she said it better.
There are so many colour theories but that's exactly what they are - theories. So according to one theory all blues are cold, but according to another (which tends to be followed by artists) there are warmer and cooler vesions of each colour. So a red that is closer to blue on the colour wheel is considered cool, whereas the red which falls next to yellow is warm. Likewise proximity to red on the wheel is what defines a blue as warm, even though, yes, blue is generally cool.
Clear as mud! But I'd say that blue is definitely a warm version as there's no yellow in it.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/08/2017 10:08

But I'd say that blue is definitely a warm version as there's no yellow in it.

LOL, it's because there no yellow in it, that I'd class it as cool.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/08/2017 10:24

Of course there are some blues that are warmer and some are colder.
Same with red, there are blue -ish reds and orange toned reds, do they can colder and warmer as well.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 20/08/2017 10:44
Grin I should have said because it's not close to yellow on the wheel. A red that's closer to yellow would be warm, but not a blue.
Paintbox · 20/08/2017 11:04

For hoc, it's def a cool winter blue

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/08/2017 19:15

A red that's closer to yellow would be warm, but not a blue.

The same rule applies. The blue in the OP is devoid of any yellow, so, when I look at it, it's completely cool, and clear.

Yellow (and red and orange, etc) add warmth. It doesn't mean you can't get cool yellows, oranges and reds, but those are the colours that add warmth.

This is a clear, cool blue to me.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 20/08/2017 20:38

I'm going by one of the artist's colour theories, as illustrated here. But it's all semantics, as colour isn't teally fully understood - hence so many theories!
Anyway, going by the hoc system, I'd say that blue was the right tone for a summer or winter.

CheckingMyPrivilege · 20/08/2017 21:18

So if a blue has yellow in it, that's warm. But what color makes blue cool? Or just straight up blue?

OP posts:
neveradullmoment99 · 20/08/2017 21:33

I would have also said it was a warm blue. Cool imo is an icey blue with white in it.
