Toenails - to paint or leave bare?

Are painted toes a bit brash? I'm considering going nail naked on holiday. Classier, right?

Painted toes all year round for me. I live in Florida and can't remember the last time I saw a woman with unpainted toes. Might be a law here.

Gah81 · 10/08/2017 15:17

Unpainted toes definitely require a lot of looking after. I rather like my feet and so it's no hardship to buff and moisturise and exfoliate. I like nail varnish too but there is something very satisfying about gazing down and seeing shell-like, pink, buffed, bare, fresh toes.

coldflange · 10/08/2017 15:40

Also I read that one should leave nails bare now and again so they don't grow fungus type things..

LockedOutOfMN · 10/08/2017 19:57

I like to paint my toes. I like matt polishes, especially the ones from the Body Shop. I tend to go for apricot, coral colours.

I do it because I live in a warm climate where my toes are out quite a lot (as well as in gym / pool changing rooms, and tend to be barefoot at home), it takes a few seconds and doesn't need to be re-done very often. It's also cheap.

Nothing wrong with unpolished toes as long as they are clean and not overgrown.

OCSockOrphanage · 10/08/2017 21:50

Usually I have colour on my pedi, but sometimes I have french pedi, but always with a contrast nail line so that it is un-natural. And it can be trimmed off. But usually colour... coral or orange generally.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 10/08/2017 21:54

I'm going to go against the grain and say that yes, OP, bare is classier.

Andcake · 10/08/2017 21:56

Painted definately. Bare many.
But go for a subtle shade.
I won't wear sandals without toe nails painted

Northernlass99 · 14/08/2017 13:34

Painted.

I'd be interested to know why do people find french polish on toenails gross?

BusterGonad · 14/08/2017 14:13

I don't like getting my feet out with bare toe nails, to me feet look far prettier with painted toes!

CakeNinja · 14/08/2017 17:46

Northern, to me they make your toes look like fingers! And also, they remind me of those tacky stick on toenails, really horrible!
I hate feet in general though, so I only just tolerate getting my own out because the nails are painted!

SunshineIndoors · 14/08/2017 22:16

With me it depends - if I'm going somewhere dressed up I'll go for an understated shade but I'm equally happy with them bare!

AvoidingCallenetics · 14/08/2017 22:18

Bare is not classier - imo bare looks like you've given up, unless your feet are perfectly buffed. It's less effort to paint your toenails and the colour helps to distract attention from less than perfect maintenance!

Ktown · 15/08/2017 07:08

Painted toenails definitely. But bare or clear polish on fingers. Painted fingers just don't look good on me though.
French manicures are grim.

MaQueen · 16/08/2017 21:11

Painted, of course. I have an OPI pedi every 3 weeks because I hate my feet not looking good.

I think unpolished looks like you've just given up...unless your feet are dainty, high arched and silky smooth with perfectly shaped nails. A foot model basically...

My MIL never, ever tends to her feet and they are vile to behold. I have been known to avoid visiting when I suspect she might be roaming barefoot [shudders]

Beauchapeau · 24/04/2022 08:46

After never baring my feet without painted toes for years, I notice the cool ( younger) ladies in the office aren’t painting theirs. It looks cool and French girl. Is it uncool to paint your toenails these days?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 24/04/2022 08:55

Bare definitely seems more fashionable at the moment. However I think you can only pull it off if you have young, smooth feet; and a faultless pedicure routine. I am both old and lazy, so slapping some is an easy win (neon coral today).

Iliveinacarboardbox · 24/04/2022 09:01

Always painted, but unlike other people I don’t like coral or pale colours on toes. I always go for deep burgundy.

Neverreturntoathread · 24/04/2022 09:02

Do what you like OP!

But for me I prefer unpainted fingernails and painted toenails (very pale shimmery pink). Better to go bare than have shabby toepolish though, that looks gross

brokengoalposts · 24/04/2022 09:14

Thread is from 2017, I think op may have already been on holiday.

Still interesting though. I’m team polish, mine are turquoise at the moment.

GettingStuffed · 24/04/2022 10:34

Never, can't afford to get them professionally done and it's too awkward to do my own

RewildingAmbridge · 24/04/2022 10:43

Bare during the winter or with a clear gel polish, unless for an event where yours night be in show in shoes, then painted all summer. Took my socks off a couple of weeks ago and DH laughed and said 'oh the season's changed' because my toes are now painted.

I've just had a peek at some French influencer insta pages and Jeanne Damas, Leia Sfez and Camille Charriere are all sporting painted toes, so it may just be a micro trend in your office.

Personally I like bare fingernails and painted toes. I just feel that bright red toenails lend a bit of elegance and gaiety to my bog standard trotters.

WildFlowerBees · 24/04/2022 16:03

Painted and not too long! Friend of mine grows her toenails like her fingers they look awful!

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 08/08/2017 21:03

Brash? No can't say that's something I have ever thought. I tend to get shellac on mine that lasts 6 weeks. Never noticed anyone without there toe nails done on holiday last month and I obviously don't look at everyone's but I do tend to look as I'm a beauty therapist and just like checking out different nail styles for inspiration.

By week 4 surely there is so much visible regrowth that it needs redoing no? 6 weeks I can't fathom. Wouldn't that be just mostly grown out?
