Lank, horrible, vile hair that gets greasy so quickly, any miracle products?

My hair is bra strap length, thick (slightly wavy but not in an attractive way) highlighted on top and uncoloured underneath. I really hoped that highlighting it would dry it out, but now the ends are really dry.
I washed it on Saturday and blow-dried, and within minutes the top was greasy and stuck to my forehead.
I've tried silicone free shampoos, shampoos for greasy hair, not washing it for a week at a time, only washing the top, but it's really getting me down.
I've tried loads of dry shampoos as well but they make my face really itchy.
I can wear it down for a day and after that the grease takes over and it's both lank and vile.
I know there's so many more important things to be upset about, and I'm being ridiculous about nothing, but I can't bear to see myself on pictures or look in the mirror.
I'm pre-menopausal as well I think.

Mines' a bit the same. Colouring helps and sometimes I wonder if the greasy shampoo makes it worse. Lush Big is excellent

Polkadot1974 · 24/07/2017 22:21

*mine's sorry

MabelFurball · 24/07/2017 22:25

I've found dry shampoo doesn't work on my greasy hair. I have sprinkled talc on it before which has made a tiny bit of difference. Apart from that I am stuck with the same problem.

pinkrocker · 24/07/2017 22:35

Lush Big, is that a shampoo?
I will try everything! Thanks for the recommendation!

I second using lush big on the roots and mid lengths of the hair, then only condition the very ends that need it.

Also bumble and bumble surfs up shapoo is also great.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/07/2017 22:45

My hair tends to get greasy around the roots especially as I am advancing towards menopause and get sweaty - I use an Argan oil shampoo now, with no conditioner (you might want to use some on the ends of your hair).
I wash my hair every other day, and have a spray round with dry shampoo on the days in between.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 24/07/2017 22:51

I just accept mine needs to be washed everyday.

Citrus shampoos help a bit.

Smallangryplanet · 24/07/2017 22:56

I use dry shampoo on clean hair straight after drying and straightening. I also use volumising powder and both help enormously. It took a while to get use to the texture but it's well worth it.

Leaving hair to dry naturally makes it look greasy immediately.

Lemond1fficult · 24/07/2017 23:31

My hair is just like yours OP.

The only product I've found that works - and this is a bit counterintuitive - is a hair oil. I use a light shampoo, just on the roots. I towel dry my hair and use a light conditioner on the ends to detangle with a wide-tooth comb, then rinse. Once I'm out of the shower I work in a few pumps of Aussie Miracle Oil on the dry ends of my hair, while my hair's still wet.

I find the oil is better than conditioner at preventing breakage, and doesn't weigh it down like a heavy conditioner. I also don't have to blow dry my hair, which stops extra dryness. At night, I tie my hair on top of my head with an old pair of tights, which stops the lengths becoming greasy. I put a bit of dry shampoo in my fringe but don't rub it out. This means I usually get 2 days out of a wash, and a third if I wear it in a topknot. (I look a treat at night, I promise you). Wink

TartanDMs · 24/07/2017 23:36

My hair is like yours. The Elvive Extraordinary Clay shampoo is a miracle worker. I use that for every wash, and then rub a bit of Moroccanoil into my lengths before drying. I don't blow dry every time either, just once a week - the rest of the time I just plait it and let it dry naturally, or put it in foam rollers.

pinkrocker · 24/07/2017 23:40

Leaving it to dry naturally you would think is better for your hair wouldn't you? But you're right, to minimise drying the ends, I wash at night and tie back with a pair of socks, it needs 2 mins next day with dryer and then I straighten. This is perhaps the problem?
I will definitely try dry shampoo straight after blow drying and washing, will put up with itchy face if it's worth it and it works!!

Which light shampoo do you use Lemon?

Off to Lush tomorrow, and will try that Aussie oil too, anything's worth a bash Smile
Thanks all!

As well as the Extraodinary Clay (Elvive Shampoo) the Elvive Phytoclear for dandruff works well. It feels very refreshing.
I also shampoo twice and also use dry shampoo and hair powder. I recommend the dry shampoo for your hair colour

pinkrocker · 25/07/2017 09:23

Hi Sarah, I tried the extraordinary clay range but the rest of my hair felt like cotton wool!

Wells SP. I use the colour save shampoo and also the liquid hair treatment once a week. Expensive but worth it. Usually I have dry ends and greasy roots and need to wash daily, but I can now wash every 2-3 days only. Life changer!!

CatsCantFlyFast · 25/07/2017 09:49

Have you ensured you've got all of the silicones out of your hair? Using silicone free shampoo only works if you're not using silicones in products and haven't got residue of silicones on your hair as they're not water soluble.
You need to thoroughly clean your hair with a shampoo or product that will get all of the silicones out. Those who do curly girl and go silicone free often use washing up liquid for that first wash (I've done it and my hair felt so clean afterwards)
There's a chance it's a silicone build up causing the grease

Heebejeebees · 25/07/2017 09:55

Alberto tea tree shampoo! No conditioner. It's the only thing that works for me

pinkrocker · 25/07/2017 10:27

Will look at those products, thank you.
What do you do to tame and calm down frizzy hair without silicones? I swear I only apply serum to the ends!

OP posts:
fatfingeredfran · 25/07/2017 10:42

Wella, not wells.

Damn autocorrect!!

pinkrocker · 25/07/2017 10:43

fatfingeredfran I thought that's what you meant Wink

fatfingeredfran · 25/07/2017 10:43

The Wella SP liquid hair treatment really takes frizzy/flyaway/dry ends. I don't need any serum or styling products if i do the treatment weekly.

Enb76 · 25/07/2017 10:51

I use Salcura - it's been my saviour and now I buy it in bulk. Also, now have extremely shiny hair! My greasy hair was actually caused by my scalp being dry so overproducing to make up for stripping by normal shampoos.

I can't guarantee it will work for you but I love it.

pinkrocker · 25/07/2017 12:14

enb do you use anything on the lengths of your hair or just this?

OP posts:
guiltybystander · 25/07/2017 12:22

Has your hair always been like this?

Lemond1fficult · 25/07/2017 12:33

@pinkrocker the light shampoo i use is John Frieda Cool Dip. Then follow with the detangling conditioner. So it doesn't really leave a residue.

pinkrocker · 25/07/2017 12:52

@*guiltybystander off and on, yeah. It wasn't when I was in my twenties (was highlighted then, too) but now, at 42 it's awful.
