If you had £1k to spend on a piece of jewellery what would you get?

I have had a big promotion and I really want to treat myself. Was planning to spend about £1k - I would estimate that my next most expensive piece of jewellery (other than my wedding ring) was about £50 so this is new territory for me!

Probably a necklace I think but I'd love to see any suggestions!

I'd probably get some nice diamond stud earrings to replace my Heavenly Necklaces cheapies.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/07/2017 08:04

Whatever item you spend it on if you want to get your money's worth join Sotheby's and christies auction site - Ive seen diamond rings that you'd pay 5k plus for go for £800 on there.

There's at least a 400% mark up on retail jewellery so if you spent 1k you might only get a piece 'worth' £200.

Local auction houses too have viewing days

splendide · 19/07/2017 08:07

That's a good idea, would be certainly up for something second hand.

I'd definitely go for diamond studs.

whydotheygetawaywithit · 19/07/2017 08:10

A bracelet. Then you aren't limited by necklines etc.
Or a lovely ring.

Agree with others - go to an auction.

Floisme · 19/07/2017 08:11

It depends on your taste but, if it was me, I'd look at up-and-coming contemporary jewellers and possibly try and get something made bespoke. I'd want wearable but a little bit 'out there'.

Lovewatchingrainfall · 19/07/2017 08:14

I would look at maybe antique jewellery necklace etc. As you are more then likely get more for your money. Just don't forget if you go to an auction you have fees

Rshard · 19/07/2017 08:14

Something that you will wear and love forever. I'd get a watch or diamond studs.

When I had to replace my jewellery due to a burglary, they were two of the things I got.

FinallyHere · 19/07/2017 08:24

Earrings probably.

What I would not do, is buy jewellery through any high street shop. Look out for a 'designer' whose work you like, so you are paying for their effort, rather than just the rent on a prime location shop. Or contact one of the firms who operate out of Hatton Gardens, they will provide you will options to pick the stones and have them made into whatever works for you.

mysteryfairy · 19/07/2017 08:24

Another vote for diamond studs. I'm not a big jewellery person but I wear the same diamond studs all the time. Recently mentioned being buried in them and DH who bought them said we may have to take them out and pass on to DD as they cost four figures...So I now know they are around your budget!

Would suggest screw in back ones if possible.

Ktown · 19/07/2017 08:48

A ring, gold silver or platinum but not white gold which is just Rodium plated silver
Agree go to Hatton garden or get something made but avoid high st

Ktown · 19/07/2017 08:49

Sorry white gold is rodium played gold!

Groupie123 · 19/07/2017 09:10

Go to De Beers on Bond St. Even their basic pieces will only grow in value.

splendide · 19/07/2017 09:15

I find Hatton Garden slightly intimidating but I haven;t been for years, will give it a go! Maybe a ring would be nice, I could wear it all the time.

OP posts:
burnishedsilver · 19/07/2017 09:24

Diamond studs.

spankhurst · 19/07/2017 09:26

A bespoke ring.

Miaoriely2017 · 19/07/2017 09:36

Diamond studs for me too.
I know I would wear the all the time.
Never go "out of style"

WillowWeeping · 19/07/2017 09:40

I doubt that very much. Per laurie auctions are definitely the way forward.

Although I'd be tempted by the Tiffany bone bracelet.

StarHeartDiamond · 19/07/2017 09:43

For pleasure of design, a Tiffany piece, definitely.

For investment, a Tiffany piece, a diamond or something in gold.

find Hatton Garden slightly intimidating

PM me, if you would like contact details for the lady (met on a yoga holiday) who has done lovey, lovely things in jewellery for me, oh and dh, come to think of it. The first time I 'tried' her, I was looking for earrings with a stone of a particular colour. She started by sending pictures of suitable stones in the right colour range from £10 to upward of £500 (plus, of course, the fixed cost for the simple setting into earrings so i knew what the end cost would be).

I was very glad that i felt absolutely no pressure to pick the more expensive stones. And of course, precisely because we felt no pressure, we have been back several times since.

silkpyjamasallday · 19/07/2017 10:48

Don't go to a branded jewellers, you are paying for a name and when you wear the jewellery no one will know its Cartier or Tiffany unless you are a knob and go around like a right knob telling everyone where it's from.

I think Hatton garden is your best bet as you will be getting value for money on the stones and metal you chose and can have anything you want made specially for you.

At the moment I am saving for a lock from Marla Aaron with DD and DPs birthstones. I found her on Instagram and I am obsessed with the locks. They are around £1000-2000 depending on the style and can be worn with necklaces or bracelets. Instagram is really good for looking up indie jewellers, there is a big community so have a browse to see what catches your eye, then at the very least you have some inspiration to take with you to Hatton garden.

Melissa Joy Manning has some lovely ethical pieces. For 1k I'd probably get a gold bangle.

They ship to the UK or you can buy via www.reveenvert.com.

sweetheart · 19/07/2017 11:00

I would of said something classic like diamond studs or pearls.

twofingerstoEverything · 19/07/2017 11:55

It most certainly isn't. Unless you're buying pure (24 ct), all gold is alloyed with other metals. White gold is GOLD alloyed with silver-coloured metals, hence the colour. Rose gold is GOLD alloyed with copper etc etc.

Honestly, I love the way people come and spout things as if they were facts without bothering to check.
