If you had £1k to spend on a piece of jewellery what would you get?

I have had a big promotion and I really want to treat myself. Was planning to spend about £1k - I would estimate that my next most expensive piece of jewellery (other than my wedding ring) was about £50 so this is new territory for me!

Probably a necklace I think but I'd love to see any suggestions!

I'd have something made just for me. I agree, don't go to a chain, you can get something personal made just for you that's special and personal

toledanosunshie · 19/07/2017 12:01

I'd also go for diamond studs, fond someone to source the stones in Hatton garden and have them made or go for a vintage Watch. I've a vintage Rolex, very simple, very stunning.

Whatever you do then don't buy from a shop, not DeBeers, not Tiffany, the mark is insane but agree, auctions or second hand is a great option

Arealhumanbeing · 19/07/2017 12:34

Exciting! Congratulations, OP.

What's your taste. It's hard to make suggestions without knowing. Do you love the idea of a blue box from Tiffany or finding a one off vintage piece?

0utForAWalkBitch · 19/07/2017 12:37

I have a few pieces from Rust Jewellery, based on the Isle of Wight (formerly Hatton garden where they may still have a workshop, not sure). I love them.

I'm also lusting after something from Loquet London, but it'd be closer to 3k.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/07/2017 12:38

I would commission something from Church house jewelers, I'll do a link...

The photos don't do his work justice, his stuff is gorgeous! He's very good about taking things back if it doesn't fit or suit.

A really nice watch as you could wear it loads.

Agree that you'll get better value in auction houses or non big names stores
Although Tiffany have some really beautiful watches and jewellery

alpacasandwich · 19/07/2017 16:25

Dame at first glance I thought you were recommending a DD's website :D

soulsearch1ng · 19/07/2017 17:14

not strictly jewellery - but I'd go for a watch.

user1498328475 · 19/07/2017 18:59

Personally I would buy a second hand art deco ring. Second hand jewellery is usually excellent quality and your money will go further.

LapinR0se · 19/07/2017 19:06

Diamond solitaire pendant or diamond studs, secondhand all the way

Ktown · 19/07/2017 19:08

Sorry to upset you two fingers. But I understood from my chemistry (from years ago) that white gold needs replating over time, whereas yellow gold, even as an alloy, doesn't.
I don't have a jewellery background!

scoobydooagain · 19/07/2017 19:09

What do you want? I got a beautiful sapphire and diamond necklace last year and plan to get a diamond necklace next year, both around the £1000 mark, if I had more I would get a tennis bracelet, looking at auctions is a good idea and I may look for a tennis bracelet myself on one. Get something you would be comfortable wearing.

Bluntness100 · 19/07/2017 19:11

I've done this and I got a good watch, so obviously that's what I would recommend, I bought a tag.

I'd personally be very worried about buying earrings in case I lost one and they are often indistinguishable from fakes. However a good watch will last a long time, won't get lost, and will retain a lot of its value also.

ladyyyglittersparkles · 19/07/2017 20:40

A fucking tiara 👸🏻😉

JaceLancs · 19/07/2017 20:59

If you really want new then I prefer jewellery quarter in Birmingham to Hatton garden - usually better value too
I nearly always buy second hand and would go for something classic and plain that won't date but concentrate on the quality
Failing that a watch - I love my second hand 18 carat gold omega watch and it goes with everything

SukiTheDog · 19/07/2017 21:00

A good watch.

Housewife2010 · 19/07/2017 22:46

You can get the stems of expensive earrings engraved so that you have to twist them in. They take longer to put in and remove but are very secure. Many years ago I lost a diamond stud which had sentimental value. My current pair were £5.5k and were engraved. I rarely take them out and they never get loose.

Housewife2010 · 19/07/2017 23:46

I've remembered that the term is "threaded" rather than engraved.

9GreenBottles · 19/07/2017 23:55

i bought myself a pair of diamond studs in 2004 and they have been out of my ears a handful of times apart from when they are being cleaned.

Those or a decent, simply styled watch.

whydotheygetawaywithit · 20/07/2017 08:01

Ktown my wedding and engagement rings are white gold. They look utter crap now. They look grey.
I would much rather have yellow gold. They look like fakes as they are such a dingy colour.

I am looking into having them put into yellow gold shanks. No way an I having the replating done
. It hasn't lasted well at all

splendide · 20/07/2017 08:22

Thanks for the suggestions. I think its definitely either something old or something from an interesting designer rather than a Tiffany type thing (although not knocking them!).

Watch I hadn't considered - that would be good but a cursory look suggests that I don't seem to be spending enough for that! I have some diamond studs already that were my mother's.

It's a lovely problem to have anyway!

John Lewis have a used jewellary line in their large stores. It's good value.

MeltorPeltor · 20/07/2017 08:42

For investment, a Tiffany piece
Worth their weight in silver, I wouldn't invest. I've heard a few queries on quality recently too.

I would go to my local independent antique jewellery shop, possibly getting pearls as they're so classic and I could replace my cheapy freshwater pearl earrings.

Bibs2014 · 20/07/2017 09:14

I'd go to Tiffanys Smile
