Skirt advice for person who never wears skirts but wants to

I am size 12 top and bottom, short, and with disappointingly small boobs. I live in jeans, all day every day, but want to be more feminine. I don't have a clue where to start with skirts.

I have finally seen one I like this one in Leaf Hazy Daze but wonder if it would make me look even shorter?

I like the shape of their shirt-dress too, but think the colours are a bit garish.

And what on earth do you wear on your legs and feet with a skirt until it is warm enough for flip-flops? Help!

What about a longer skirt to start with? I live in jeans for most of the time, but I really like quite long, thick skirts for work - cord or heavy cotton - long, so that you can wear boots with them - it's as close as wearing trousers as you can get!

Recently I've started wearing shorter skirts - like the one you linked to - feels very different and also requires more girly shoes!!

Tutter · 24/03/2007 14:14

lol at disappointingly small boobs

i too am not agreat skirt wearer, but often don one in the summer - usually just below knees and swishy

i would say that anything fussy, printed or swushy should always be worn with a simple top - plain fitted vest top or t-shirt - othersie you get too much going on

think the boden one could be good - printed without being girly pretty ikywim

as for shoes, i tend to wait til it's warm enough for ballerina shoes or flip flops

deaconblue · 24/03/2007 14:14

LOL was about to suggest this exact skirt before I'd clicked on your link. Am quite short too and skirts like these are fab for the summer and can be dressed up a bit with high heeled sandals for evening. Gap do some in a similar shape when the weather gets warmer. I would onlyi wear it with bare legs and flip flops or ballet pumps though - def not for cold weather. I only do skirts in summer or in the evening though

fortyplus · 24/03/2007 14:15

Have you seen that the latest thing seems to be a 'mini' lenghth tunic type dress with leggings worn underneath? Maybe that would be a bit of a compromise to get you used to the idea of wearing a skirt, but keep the pins reasonably warm.

MuffinMclay · 24/03/2007 14:27

I think the tunic/leggings thing looks good on really skinny people, but I've not got the legs for it (and I'd probably look pg wearing a tunic).

I have some ballet pumps (never worn) but they're black, so would they look odd with this? I don't think I could wear heels (I've never actually tried ) and I don't really go out in the evenings. It is more for wearing to the supermarket etc in the daytime.

I think I will get the Boden one and see what it is like. I can always send it back if I don't like it.

Where else could I find a suitable skirt (I don't live anywhere near a Gap - I wish they did online shopping)?

Was watching Richard & Judy the other day - deeply embarrassing, I know - but I was just passing the time whilst pounding away on my friend's cross trainer!

They showed some of the latest high st fashions, inc the tunics. They suggested the slightly rounder ones amongst us should go for bootleg trousers under the tunic instead.

MuffinMclay · 24/03/2007 14:35

I have a feeling that I would get it very wrong if I attempted the tunic and anything look.

Just noticed that the Boden skirt is out of stock in my size. I need a Plan B.

OP posts:
fortyplus · 24/03/2007 14:39

I wouldn't suit me, either, frankly

Boden clothes are usually good quality - but if you order then don't forget to say you don't want your name passed to 3rd parties - they shamelessly sell your details to all & sundry.

MuffinMclay · 24/03/2007 14:46

I've had a few tops from them before (I can do tops), but never plucked up the courage to buy a skirt.

Assume you're shopping in petite sections? That Boden one might be too long on you, how about \link{http://www.dorothyperkins.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=20552&storeId=12552&categoryId=51567&parent_category_rn=51561&productId=306667&langId=-1\this) one?
I second the below-the-knee skirt with heeled boots, could be straight or bias/swishy. If you have particularly short legs you need to have your waistline clearly defined, would not recommend tunic tops. A fitted/stretchy longsleeved top - with small boobs a highish slash/boat neck or bardot style would look good - get that collarbone working for you.

brimfull · 24/03/2007 14:51

I think as you're short and a nice slim size the a-line shape that goes to the knee is very flattering. You have to be careful that long skirts don't swamp you.So if they are long they'd need to be quite slimline and skimming the body, bias cut would work.
Anyway with that skirt you linked I would think ballet shoes or sandals for day and heels for evening.
In the winter I live in knee length a-line skirts and flat boots.

fortyplus · 24/03/2007 14:51

You just have to try on things and see if they suit you - take an honest friend!

I sometimes buy fairly expensive clothes, but I once had a pair of jeans and every time I wore them someone would ask me if I'd lost weight - they cost 10 quid in Primark! They must have just been very flattering to my shape - tending towards pear shaped.

brimfull · 24/03/2007 14:53

I saw some lovely skirts in wallis and principles yesterday.
Principles have a great petite section.

brimfull · 24/03/2007 14:54

this is lovely ,much nicer in rl

fortyplus · 24/03/2007 14:57

I think that would be too scary for someone who has never worn a skirt!

brimfull · 24/03/2007 14:59

why ...too patterned?

brimfull · 24/03/2007 15:00

hopefully not too scary

Gess · 24/03/2007 15:01

Agree with Dottydot- exactly my style too- wear thick cord like skirts with boots quite a lot now and don't feel uncomfortable. Rest of the time its jeans/trousers.

Gess · 24/03/2007 15:03

I like the Boden one (and their skirts tend to be well made). Also like ggirls second one.

deaconblue · 24/03/2007 15:06

that not too scary one is nice and summer sporty looking too

fortyplus · 24/03/2007 15:14

ggirl - first one had so many leaves & it looked like one my Granny wore in about 1965!

Not sure about the other one for a first time skirt wearer with a complex about not having slim legs! Tho if she's size 12 it should be fine. I think something A-line would be better for a skirt virgin!

MuffinMclay · 24/03/2007 15:42

I prefer the first one (Principles) to the second (Fat Face). The FF one is far too short and, I think, too young for me (35 years).

Bucketsofdynomite · 24/03/2007 16:08

This was the link I was trying to do! You could dress it down with a denim jacket and brown leather sandals (wedgy heeled mules?) in the summer.

Bucketsofdynomite · 24/03/2007 16:09

Wrong link again! Right skirt but there is a petite version, same price just diff cat no.
