Just wondering about different people's view on what a particular size is in cm or inches. I chose size 10 as it's quite common so most peopke will be dairly familar with it.

So what bust, waist and hip measurements would you say are a size 10?

No reason for this other than the fact that twi colleagues were discussing it today and both had different measurements but both said they were a size 10.

I'm 30DD, 28, 38 and usually a 10 on top and 12 on the bottom. Depends slightly on the shop and style of the garment, though.

BusterGonad · 07/07/2017 19:47

A size 10 is generally a 28 inch waist I believe, I'm wearing size 10 Levi's, I am no way a size 10, I'm a size 14, I have a large waist and slim hips and bottom so I can squeeze into a 12. The actual sizing of clothes varies so much so it's a pointless debate really. If a top is 100% cotton with no give I can't usually even fit a 16 but a size 16 dress with five looks like a sack on me as it's too big.

BusterGonad · 07/07/2017 19:48

With give NOT with five!

28" waist. My waist never really goes much thinner than that even if I haven't a spare gram. It's my shape. I'm quite straight up and down, but it's only when I'm confronted with my measurements that i realise that. The starlet, 1950s, ideal 36-24-36 sounds so caricature to me.

SorrelForbes · 07/07/2017 19:51

I'm 35/27/38 (30FF bra). I went dress shopping today and fitted into a 10 in every shop (Reiss, French Connection, Hobbs, Coast etc.). I have a feeling that I'd be a 12 in places like Top Shop!

buggerthebotox · 07/07/2017 20:14

I'm a 10 in skinny jeans from Tu and Tesco. The last jacket I bought in Tu was a 10 and it fits, even though I'm 32E.

In "older" jeans (say bought from a charity shop) I'm always a 12. Jackets bought on eBay too.

Hairq · 07/07/2017 21:10

Also, things for different body types completely differently regardless of the measurements. For example, a pair of jeans can have a waist that measures an inch or two more than my waist, but still won't do up on my waist because I'm an hourglass and my bigger bum and hips steal fabric, making the waist not fit me.

BlackStars · 07/07/2017 22:33

Also using bust measurement is pretty pointless as a 32G is going to need something a bit bigger than a 32B.

BeepBeepMOVE · 07/07/2017 22:45

26 waist should be a ten but now everyones fat it's 28 but bust and hips have stayed the same. Annoying for people with a proper shape.

Waxlyrically · 08/07/2017 09:00

In the 80's (pre kids and middle age) I was 34 24 34 and used to buy an eight. Interestingly that was about the smallest size there was at that time - you rarely saw sixes for example. Now I'm more like 36 30 36 and wear anything from an eight to a fourteen with twelve being my average. To me this all suggests sizes have gone up and the "new" small sizes are the eights and tens of old.

FrowningFlamingo · 08/07/2017 11:00

I consider myself a 16. My cousin is almost exactly the same size and shape as me and wears a 12. Depends on the shop and the style, there's very little consistency imo.

Ktown · 08/07/2017 11:03

Size 10 is/was a 27 waist and very slim.
I am a 'size 10' but certainly couldn't sit down in a 27 waist. Am 5'5 and 8 stone /51 kg
Sizes are non standard now.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 08/07/2017 11:17

How strange! I'm 35 26 37 and I wear a 10 or 8 in topshop - a size 12 hangs off me. But then I'm short so there's more fabric. Are you measuring round the widest part of your bum and doing the boobs by leaning forward a la bra intervention method?

Fozzleyplum · 08/07/2017 12:57

I tend to ignore the size on the label, except as a starting point. I carry a tape measure, so that by the time I try on clothes, I already know they are the right size - it's then just a question of whether they look good on.
