Can you find a tightwad like me a dress for a wedding?

I have a fairly unconventional, outdoorsy wedding coming up.
I have squillions of clothes but fancy something new.
It has to be in a sale because I can't bear to buy anything full price.
I am 50, 5'7" size 10.

I haven't had much luck in S&B before and would love to see what you lot could come up with

Please? Flowers

I prefer the blue one too. The swallows one is very really pretty but, from a distance, I think it'll just look like any other patterned dress. The shape of the blue one is more interesting. Sorry never bought from them so can't help re sizing.

MrsDV, I've recently discovered a great charity shop on Upper Street, nearer Highbury & Is end, Save the Children. Have you seen it? Nice fitting room, small selection of well chosen clothes. It's definitely worth a look if you're okay with 2nd hand. I picked up a couple of dresses the other week which I'm really pleased with.

Floisme- I agree on the shape, really interesting. Also would look particularly good on 5ft7 and size 10 build like OP.

TheFirstMrsDV · 01/07/2017 13:12

I will try and check that out onwego I know that one. Its near the big one on the corner isn't it? Or is it that one?

thanks for the reminder.

I am a bit annoyed with Finery. they clearly know what sort of customer they want. FIVE quid delivery and only free returns if you spend over £100. You cant use your new customer discount in the sale and you have to buy two items.

Lovely clothes but my tightwaddiness is really holding me back

In the meantime I have just bought 4 lovely items from a charity shop but none of them are weddingy

I need help Grin

I am off to paint the kitchen now so apols if I miss anything Flowers

John Lewis stock Finery, limited range though.

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2017 21:17

That swallow print dress is 94% polyester. Just in case that matters to you.

MorelloKisses · 02/07/2017 08:37

Buy £100 of stuff (get free deliver and returns) and return all but one item.

TheFirstMrsDV · 02/07/2017 17:37

what a great idea!

It does matter Bike, well spotted.
If I am buying into the whole upmarket thing I expect nicer fabrics tbh.

In my experience Finery come up big.

BikeRunSki · 02/07/2017 18:02

I was very disappointed by a Finety dress I ordered. It was horrible polyester jersey, a bit like a cheap school sweatshirt but not fluffy on the inside. Would have been lovely on cotton Lycra, but as it was it would have pulled terribly and been really sweaty.

TheFirstMrsDV · 02/07/2017 18:14

I am beginning to think they are all about the marketing. The £100 rule says a lot about how they want to present themselves.

My very best wedding outfits have come from Peacocks of all places!

I like that shirt dress.
I wouldn't wear it to a wedding but would wear it to work.
I find the fabric a bit problematic at Peacocks. I can't really wear anything too nylony because I get so hot

I am going to pop in next time I pass though.

I am in sa.e position and tempted by this: www.silkfred.com/boutiques/lanti/clothing/cobalt-blue-a-line-midi-dress

TSSDNCOP · 03/07/2017 22:11

I like both the Finery. Get both in a couple of sizes and you'll go over the £100 easily.

NC4now · 03/07/2017 22:49

Would you consider a jumpsuit?

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/07/2017 08:26

Never worn one but not against them

Like the Finery dresses but also not keen on synthetics. Have you looked at Boden? They also have a sale on at the mo.

Blogwoman · 04/07/2017 08:40

Aspire Style also worth a look for quirky dresses www.aspirestyle.co.uk/products/dresses

rookiemere · 04/07/2017 08:45

Go to the charity shops in posh part of town.
Last year I bought a beautiful monsoon silk dress for £20 for a wedding - was planning to wear it again but ended up buying a gorgeous sheath dress for £12.99 (it was incorrectly sized and looked as if someone had taken it in hence so cheap) both in our local charity shop.

Likelihood is occasion dresses will only have been worn once maybe twice so effectively you're getting a 80-90% discount because of it. Plus there's less choice which suits me well.

rookiemere · 04/07/2017 08:48

See that you are already a veteran charity shopper.

Have you tried Ebay? I googled coast size 10 and some lovely dresses popped up - could get something very cheaply if you time your bid right.

Floisme · 04/07/2017 09:39

Sainsbury's / Tesco / Asda? I'm not normally a fan cos I find they look like crap after a couple of wears but for one-off occasion dresses I think they're quite decent. I agree about not spending much on wedding outfits - I can never tell the difference in photos plus there's a fighting chance someone will tip their drink over it.

(Unless my son gets married in which case all bets are off.)
