Graduation outfit

I really need some help in finding what to wear to my graduation ceremony.

It's on the 12th of July so expecting hot weather. Ideally I want a blouse which has detailing on the sleeves/cuffs to show through the gown and some on the front of the blouse as well. I don't want to be too boring and go for white so was thinking a blush colour blouse with black trousers?

Where can I find a blouse like this? I feel like I've checked everywhere, but can't find any! Prepared to spend about £30 on the blouse.

The trousers I will probably get from Zara; smart and tailored trousers and then for shoes a mid-heel (so I don't trip on stage). Does this sound like a good outfit? It's my first graduation and I'm also the first graduate in my family so everyone will be expecting pictures. Thanks in advance.

"is a collar really necessary? a lot of people have said its much easier to wear the gown"

You need something to attach the hood could pin it, or risk it loose, but anchoring to a shirt button is securest (and you don't want to come adrift during the formal bits).

Plain white btw, isn't boring in this context, it's the irreproachable classic.

But you will find all sorts of stuff under a gown, so unless specified (as it is at say Oxbridge) it's fine to wear what you want.

leghoul not too keen on the monsoon designs but thanks for looking

AnguaResurgam thats what ive been told so i have been looking for a collared shirt. i think a white blouse with black slim trousers is the most classic look

How's this shirt? I think the lace adds something different to the bottom and its collared.

I'm an academic so wear a gown for graduation every year.
Whatever blouse you wear the weight of the hood will pull it up. To get round this use safety pins on the under side of the hood to pin it to the gown. Then it won't matter how lightweight the blouse is / whether it has a collar etc.
Definitely think black trousers, low heels and pale coloured blouse will work well.
If you pick a blouse with colour, make sure it won't clash with the colours on the hood.
Also, don't forget the hair grips to weld your mortar board to your head.
Hope you have a fantastic day!

igivein do you think the river island shirt is OK? I've ordered it fir Sunday hopefully looks good.
I will be taking safety pins and bobby pins with me on the day

Might interfere with the hood though

velvetroses · 06/07/2017 19:15

gamerpigeon I've ordered the river island one. Will be getting the trousers and heels this weekend and that's me sorted. Would anyone recommend taking a clutch or a slightly bigger bag?

Sorry, had to do life for a bit!
The river island blouse is perfect - it's right on trend for now and classic enough that your kids won't say 'what were you thinking?' When they look at the photos in however many years time Grin
I'd go for a small clutch - quite often the sleeves of the gowns form a really handy 'pocket' that it will go in when you don't want to be holding anything.

velvetroses · 06/07/2017 20:52

igivein not to worry! I can't believe I didn't see that short before in river island but in ordered it to be delivered in store on Sunday thank goodness for that. Massive weight of my mind. Next is my sister's outfits but I'll just get them dresses from next or something

Since I'm wearing black trousers with black heels I'll just get a black clutch to match as well. But I was going to wear a nude or taupe coloured hijab...will that look out of place?

You have to leave your bag on your seat when you go and get your degree. Assuming you have drinks and food after, I think a clutch could be a bit awkward. If you are having a mortar board or cap, how will that work with a hijab? Make sure you order the right size.

velvetroses · 06/07/2017 22:51

BubblesBuddy so maybe something like a cross body bag? I'll have a look while I'm in town tomorrow.
I measured my head while wearing my hijab like I would do on the day. I did my hair a little bit lower so the cap will fit comfortably. If on the day it's not right I can go to the toilet and redo my hair and hijab the see what the cap is like.

Do you think I should get Nude heels or black? As I'm either wearing a Nude hijab or a taupe kinds of colour.

If you have people coming to watch you, leave your bag with them so you're not fretting about it in the ceremony, or if you don't end up back in the same seat.

velvetroses · 06/07/2017 23:23

EduCated yes my family are coming. I was thinking I might not take a bag I can just put my stuff in my mums bag. All I'd need is my phone, portable charger, pins and makeup I'm wearing. Although I was thinking of taking flats to wear on the way and changing into my heels
