Anyone have problems with self tan but found an amazing one??

I have hated all fake tans that I have tried despite following the correct guidance, exfoliating etc etc. I have tried at home and also had spray tans. Always the same. Horrible smell you can smell for ages and ALWAYS horrible at the knees and goes patchy or streaks.

Do I give up forever or has anyone actually found one I should try? I have pale skin that does not tan so I wouldn't want to be too dark?

Hmmm. Sweating it off overnight is a possibility! Maybe I should wait until a day when I haven't got to go out and apply it in the morning. The moisturising is done 30-45 mins beforehand and it's only lightly apart from knees and elbows which I apply a little more liberally. Is there a chance I'm also using to less tan? Like I'm spreading it too thinly perhaps?

Crushsick · 21/06/2017 16:14

but the skin is definately coloured underneath .

It definitely isn't. Especially on my legs. They literally look exactly the same milky pale shade they started as! Sad

WellTidy · 21/06/2017 16:18

I've tried loads of fake tans - gradual ones, wash off ones, the lot. I am quite pale, and my knees are super dry, even after loads of exfoliating and moisturizing. The only fake tan that works well for me is the st tropez in shower one. No streaks, no patches, very believable light tan colour. The bottle says to use it every 3 days or so, but I use it daily for 3 days to get the colour going, then every 3 days or so to maintain it.

CalmShambala · 21/06/2017 16:28

Clarins radiance drops on face.
Bondi Sands on legs.

PoniesandProsecco · 21/06/2017 16:36

I absolutely love b.perfect 10 second tan! It's an Irish brand but you can get it online. It literally dries in 10'seconds and develops over the day then shower it off next time you're in an lad it lasts over a week!

TheNewMrsTomHardy · 21/06/2017 16:36

I've used this one from Xen Tan over and over again. I love it, it gives you a beautiful colour.

franciemczoo · 21/06/2017 16:45

Sorry to hijack. Can I ask about the St Tropez in shower one?

I bought it in the winter in afford to maintain a bit of a glow.

So I get in the shower, apply as instructed. I then get out of the shower and wash my hands in the sink and dry them. Then set my phone timer to 3 mins. Stand there like a lemon freezing to death for 3 mins and then washed it off.

Is this what everyone does? It seemed a bit uncomfortable and annoying to do on a regular basis so haven't used it since.

But I'm thinking of using it tonight. It's boiling hot here today so I'll enjoy standing in the bathroom wet for 3 minutes!

franciemczoo · 21/06/2017 16:46
  • afford should read in an effort
Hammybear · 21/06/2017 16:48

Bondi Sands Liquid Gold every time!!

Tippitoesandbuttonnose · 21/06/2017 16:53

Serial false tanner here. After years of botching my knees I can now tell you if they're coming out darker and patchy you're simply not exfoliating properly. Try a scrub on dry skin then in the shower shave your knees (trust me this rid of the dead skin you've just scrubbed) then go in again with the scrub. When dry if knees still feel a little rough, use pummace (sp) stone over it and moisturise. DONT put tan over moisturiser that's not soaked in

pandorawithtreaclecolouredhair · 21/06/2017 17:29

Arealhumanbeing: yes, the Clarins drops do have a slight fake tan smell.
I use them at night, usually every other night, and have my shower the following morning, so the smell is then washed away.

Ineverdidmind · 21/06/2017 17:35

I like the garnier spray, I just spritz myself a few mornings in a row after my shower and after about three days I'm a nice colour. I think because I layer it it reduces the potential for patches.
Also like the St Tropez shower one, and tan wipes.

alabasterangel · 21/06/2017 17:38

Please someone say which bondi sands - milk, foam, lotion? Or are they all good?

And define 'leave on for several hours' - would 5 hours work?

Tatlerer · 21/06/2017 17:58

Following as would also like to know more about Bondi Sands. Presuming it's sold in Boots?

Kennethnoisewater · 21/06/2017 18:23

I buy the light/medium foam. Ive currently got it on my legs right now if you want a pic!

Kennethnoisewater · 21/06/2017 18:23

P.s. I buy it in Superdrug as it's usually on offer!

Purplerainbow · 21/06/2017 19:56

kenneth yes please!!

Tatlerer · 21/06/2017 20:04

Thank you kenneth and thanks OP for the thread!

Kennethnoisewater · 21/06/2017 20:05

Ok here they are!
Things to bear in mind; I am whiter than white! So this is enough colour for me, if you want darker then buy the darker foam. This is only one coat, if yo want more intense colour then apply, wait half an hour and then reapply a second coat.

Purplerainbow · 21/06/2017 20:16

Thank so kenneth!! How is it on your knees, it looks good? Or did you have good knees to start with?? My knees naturally are a bit red, they always look awful with fake tan Sad maybe I'll wait until this stupid heat drops a bit so that I can wear trouser if this one blotches aswell like the others!

Kennethnoisewater · 21/06/2017 20:35

I give my knees a good scrub beforehand, but it's very important NOT to moisturise before you put the bondi sands on.

JohnCheese · 21/06/2017 20:54

Mainly placemarking as I'm on th lookout for a good fake tan too.

But Crushsick, DON'T moisturise before you apply. (Except knees as elbows) Tan won't develop at all.

Purplerainbow · 21/06/2017 20:55

Don't moisturise before??? But my knees are bumpy? How long to leave not moisturising?

OP posts:
JohnCheese · 21/06/2017 21:00

Moisturise your knees and elbows and anywhere you don't want tanned. Exfoliate before, moisturise only after the tan has developed. Moisturiser blocks the fake tan reaching your skin.

I only don't moisturise the day of tanning. (Awful sentence, apols) Exfoliate before tan.

Taranta · 21/06/2017 21:17

I've got a sandal strap mark issues - reckon I need to try and self-tan that ankle strap mark unless I want to carry on wearing saltwaters for the rest of the summer Hmm
