Toenail fungal treatment

upwardsandonwards33 · 18/06/2017 21:18

I saw this in Boots but it cost around £25. Has anyone tried it? I like the idea of it as it has nail polish and no filing. I have been avoiding doing something to my not so lovely toes due to this faff but this heat means I need to get going. Sorry about not being good at doing links properly.

I havent tried that particular product but I have tried 4 or 5 others. In the end it was vicks vaporub that finally sorted it out.

BusterGonad · 19/06/2017 06:33

Burnished I only came on here to say Vicks as well! Grin

AGapInTheMarket · 19/06/2017 06:40

I had mine lasered three times and it STILL didn't work! The clinic I went to made you sign something saying it was guaranteed so I still had to pay loads of money for it too! No solutions here yet but I did read something online about someone curing theirs by heating up the toenail regularly with a hairdryer (but protecting the surrounding tissue with a thick piece of card) as fungus is heat-sensitive. Worth a try, I guess!

toomuchfaster · 19/06/2017 06:42

Vicks did nothing for me. I used it for over 18months while pregnant and breastfeeding. The best thing to start with is the one that dissolves the nail in a couple of weeks, then use something anti fungal.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 19/06/2017 06:47

If I were you I'd go to the GP and get it sorted asap.

I had toenail fungus on both big toes. One big toe got ingrown too, constantly infected and I had to have the entire nail off... twice. In a very painful procedure. The second time permanently. So no nail on one toe.

The other toenail got the fungus so bad the nail grew on top of itself so many times it's now several inches thick and curled round. Fungus now gone and left with a severely damaged nail that nobody will do anything about because it doesn't actually hurt, it just looks ugly.

If I want it off it'll cost £200 private.

So yes, GP and get it sorted asap. No messing around with homemade crap. If I'd known how serious it would get, I wouldn't have been so casual about it.

I bought these items in this kit separately from Boots for about a fiver..

www.boots.com/canespro-fungal-nail-treatment-10153509

and I am on the way back to normal with 3 nails on one foot.

Its harsh - but it's worked - I would advise you start this in autumn when you wont be wearing sandals anymore,

I'd tried vicks, I'd tried other treatments, I even when to a chiropodist who said the only way was 6 months of strong tablets.

But you cover each toe that needs in urea cream and seal with plaster tape. and change it every day for 2 weeks. every time you can, you nail clip your nail down

    • on my big toe I literally ended up with about 5mm of nail!! BUT it got it. and it's growing back fine.

I at the moment - stick a false nail on it (it;s grown about 1/2 way atm) in the same nail polish as my others and you literally can't tell Grin

As I said - probably better to just paint them over for summer and start this in Autumn.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 19/06/2017 06:55

probably better to just paint them over for summer and start this in Autumn.

Awful advice. You should never paint over a fungal nail, that makes it worse, and if she waits until Autumn that's a much longer time for the fungus to take hold and will make it much harder to tackle.

Silvertap · 19/06/2017 06:59

Only long term antibiotics from the GP got mine sorted. Wish I'd gone earlier rather than spending a fortune on over the counter treatments

Floralnomad · 19/06/2017 07:00

I tried loads of over the counter things but the only thing that worked for me was a hefty course of terbenafine (sp) from the GP , it's not a pleasant drug but it worked for my toe and the problem has never returned , you do need at least 6 months worth though and lots of GPs seem reluctant to prescribe it .

theflickyones · 19/06/2017 07:04

I've tried a few things (though admittedly not for as long as I should have) and Fungus Stop has worked so far on big toes. I file every week or so but apart from that the only faff is waiting for it to dry before putting socks on.

AnthonyPandy · 19/06/2017 07:17

I second terbinafine. Just go straight to the proper stuff or you'll be faffing around for ages.

Hulder · 19/06/2017 15:36

Terbinafine.

I wasted years faffing around with other stuff.

I was fairly sure my GP wouldn't be keen to prescribe so got mine prescribed online from Lloyds chemist.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/06/2017 15:38

Golden seal tincture works a treat. We used that on DS when he was 2 as the GP had said nothing else was suitable as he was so young.

Itsnothingoriginal · 19/06/2017 20:34

I'm using pure Tea Tree oil on mine and it's clearing slowly. GP said try that or Vicks and again wasn't keen to prescribe anything. The Vicks stopped working after a while although it did clear it up for 6 months or so. It's a real faff but I'm scared of trying the long term antibiotic treatment as I know someone who had really awful side effects with it Shock

TheHouseOfIllRepute · 19/06/2017 20:39

I used the canespro which sort of rots your nails away. I did it all properly and for much longer than it said but they grew back just the same
I have it on 3 nails. I then used neat tea tree oil which was amazing
2 nails are completely clear and the other looks much better but is still a bit thick
I'm still putting it on

LokisLover · 19/06/2017 20:44

Furball can I ask what false nails you use and how do they stay on?

My big toenail is about to fall off and I don't want to go through the summer with an unprotected toe. Makes me feel a bit squeamish.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 19/06/2017 20:52

My DS has fungal nail, been to the go who gave him a course of antibiotics a few months ago but they still look bad, what's the Vicks solution? Do I file away the hard extra nail on top?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 19/06/2017 20:53

My big toenail is about to fall off and I don't want to go through the summer with an unprotected toe. Makes me feel a bit squeamish.

How odd. I have no nail on one of my big toes due to having to have it removed (because of fungus which turned into a very nasty infected ingrown) and then acid put onto it to stop it growing again, and it's absolutely fine.

It doesn't need to be "protected" by a nail. I'll never have a nail there again and I'd much rather that than the repeated infections from before.

FreeButtonBee · 19/06/2017 20:55

I went for the hard stuff from th doctor. Worked well but took another 2 years(!) for the nails to completely recover. I keep them well trimmed and afterwards used some of the OTC nail conditioners to get the nail and surrounding skin back into good shape. Was a proper slog

PollyPerky · 19/06/2017 21:10

what worked for me was neat tea tree oil applied at least once a day to the nail and UNDER the end of the nail. Rubbed well in. I also left off nail polish on that toe only Hmm and painted it only for a few hours when feet were on show (then removed varnish.)

Also going bare foot as much as poss in the house, changing socks every day, etc.

upwardsandonwards33 · 19/06/2017 21:23

I have just looked at the stuff the GP prescribed me - Amorolfine. Anyone used that?

OP posts:
Hulder · 20/06/2017 02:08

Is it the nail lacquer?

Was one of the many things (also tea tree, Vicks, other over the counter remedies) that was crap.

Only chance it has is if your toe isn't very badly affected and you've only got 1 toe nail affected, not several. You can buy it and it comes with a nice diagram explaining whether it might work or not.

Didn't apply to me so unsurprisingly it didn't work.

Want2bSupermum · 20/06/2017 02:15

We are here in the US and the doctor prescribed fungal treatment is expensive (but covered by our insurance) which is probably why GP's don't want to prescribe it.

Want2bSupermum · 20/06/2017 02:19

DH had the most hideous nail infection which was at least 10 years old. Total cash cost was about $2500 in copays for doctor visits over 24 months and $275 for the prescription. Our insurance covered most of it. So far it hasn't come back.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 20/06/2017 02:20

Yeah, the nail lacquer didn't work for me.

Neither did the Terbinafine, which I was on for many, many months, but it really is your best bet.
