Toenail fungal treatment

I saw this in Boots but it cost around £25. Has anyone tried it? I like the idea of it as it has nail polish and no filing. I have been avoiding doing something to my not so lovely toes due to this faff but this heat means I need to get going. Sorry about not being good at doing links properly.

Oh, and absolutely no nail varnish on toenails until you are sure the infection is totally gone. It really does make the problem worse otherwise.

Sycamorewindmills · 22/06/2017 19:46

I have it on one toe nail only. Tried neat tea tree oil for a while but it brought the skin around my toe up into red itchy blisters, it felt like it was on fire. Took a long time to get better. Just ordered lamisil once so will see how that goes.

FozzieMK · 23/06/2017 12:10

I used Lamisil Once a year or so ago and not long after started seeing quite a bit of hair loss. I googled the product, as it was the only 'different' thing I had taken, to find out it is a common side-effect with this medicine. I had no idea.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 23/06/2017 15:39

FozzieMK That sucks.

I took Terbinafine (Lamisil) tablets for nearly a year with no hair loss (or other side effects, and it didn't clear up my nails either as they were too far gone).

OpenMindedSceptic · 23/06/2017 16:40

I had severe infection on 3 toes for 7 years. Tried every single natural remedy going.
Tea tree - did nothing apart from giving me an awful skin reaction.
Coconut oil - no improvement
Apple cider vinegar soak - turned all of my toenails brown/didn't work
White vinegar &listerine soak - (I did this one for 16 months (!!!) every single bloody night) - marginal improvement after 6 months but not enough to beat it.
GP prescribed some anti fungal tablets but one look on side effect and I didn't want to start the course.

This is what worked for me:

Kerasal nail solution followed by Lamisil cream. Morning and night.
Took a year but it's gone ! I am wearing sandals again.

OpenMindedSceptic · 23/06/2017 16:43

one look at side effects

FloatyCat · 23/06/2017 20:41

Don't bother with any of the laquer treatment. The infection lives in your nail bed, lawyers simply do not penetrate through.
I had a very serve infection and terbinafine was the only thing that worked. One of my nails dropped off in the end, but wearing sandals again this year.

FloatyCat · 23/06/2017 20:41

Laquers not lawyers!!

MrsBadger · 23/06/2017 20:47

Tried Vicks, tea tree, orange oil, all the lacquers.

I read up in the Canespro stuff but couldn't face the price - and am currently having success with Flexitol to soften nail, penknife (I know, I know) to carve away excess, and Daktarin Aktiv i.e. miconazole all over whatever's left, and all over rest of foot too.

6m worth of healthy growth, looking forward to sandals next year!

(Oh, and GP refused to give oral antifungals because cultures came back negative Hmm. Ever tried to culture a nail fungus in the lab? It's really really hard.)

taybert · 23/06/2017 20:59

The thing is sometimes nails just are yellow and thickened and it isn't a fungus- hence some people saying the oral terbinafine didn't work. It's a potentially toxic drug to take for a long time without being sure it is that so the advice is only to prescribe with a positive culture/microscopy. You do need a good sample though, a good amount of nail and some of the soft stuff from underneath. It isn't really a cost issue, it isn't that expensive, but it's a treatment of several months with potential for serious side effects so you don't want to take it if it isn't the right thing!

MrsBadger · 23/06/2017 21:04

(I can't believe there wouldn't have been positive microscopy on mine but they won't even try, it's culture or nothing. Still, am getting good results with the miconazole / urea combo)

I was prescribed Terbinafine after a positive culture; it still didn't work for me unfortunately. But, my nails really were too far gone at that point that I don't think anything short of removing them (and using phenol to stop regrowth) would work.

taybert · 23/06/2017 21:22

Hmm. Fungi are tricky buggers alright. Our lab gives us a microscopy result within a few days then the culture in about 3 weeks. For me fungus under a microscope and something that looks like a fungal nail infection is enough to prescribe the oral stuff once we've had a good chat about risks etc but some places will be more black and white.

AdoraBell · 23/06/2017 21:26

I'm using the Schols (so) one. It's working really well so far. Pharmacist told me it takes a year's continued treatment to clear it.
