Embracing the curly hair

So I'm embracing my file hair. I bought boots curl cream (pick pot) and I was impressed with the curl I got (plopped it while wet).

My question is how to you keep your hair looking nice if not washing every day.

I also got a salt spray to try and curl be ends a bit more after a day. What does Everyobe else do

Try British Curlies website, they have the Low poo method!

Ollivander84 · 13/06/2017 21:26

Make sure your products are curly girl safe if you're doing the whole thing. The pink curl stuff isn't CG safe

I'll be interested in the answers as wash day is definitely my best hair day. The others are a bit meh

Stickmangate · 14/06/2017 05:18

I got the boots curl cream after seeing it recommended on here. In my ignorance I did think it was curly girly friendly will have another look.
Will try the Moroccan oil thanks.

What shampoo conditioners do you all use. I had been using body shop rainforest but it started to make my hair feel horrible so switched to boots own coconut one

My hairdresser recommended Shu Uemura shampoo and conditioner. It's expensive but it lasts a really long time and the conditioner leaves your hair as light as a feather and really silky (called velvet something) although you have to pick the right one - when I ran out of shampoo I stupidly picked the wrong one and my hair turned to a crisp! Otherwise I use the Extraordinary Oil from L'Oreal.

Also a fan of MoroccanOil curl control mousse. It really tames the frizz without being sticky or heavy. I've always been curious about using the actual oil from their range - does anyone have experience of it or their shampoos and conditioners?

ZaraW · 14/06/2017 06:34

Try the As I am Range it's fab. Superdrug sell it.

QueenoftheAndals · 14/06/2017 06:35

The Morrocannoil isn't actually an oil, it's a silicone-based serum like Frizz-Ease.

SingaporeSlander · 14/06/2017 06:44

I saw I think on one of the curly girl websites about having a bottle with some water and drops of essential oil mix and using this to spritz on the second day to freshen it up.

Haven't tried it yet!

Stickmangate · 14/06/2017 06:49

Thanks all I will. Zaraw I will have a look at as I am range

I dampen my hair and put some natural gel on. I used to use a spray bottle, but now just wet my hands under the tap and scrunch my ends up.

My natural gel is aloe Vera or flax seed gel.

QueenoftheAndals · 14/06/2017 07:07

The Umberto Giannini curl jelly is the best thing for my hair and it's very lightweight. I diffuse the roots after using it and then scrunch out the crunch when it's completely dry. I'd heard good things about the Cantu curl activator cream but it just turned my curls greasy and limp. I think it'd be fine for thicker hair though.

mathanxiety · 14/06/2017 07:14

placemarking

tabulahrasa · 14/06/2017 07:24

If you're going to do curly girl, you need to do it properly or it doesn't work... I say that because I've tried it before and not done it properly, so I was inadvertently still using stuff with silicon in it.

tabulahrasa · 14/06/2017 07:28

Oh and currently on non wash days, I use cantu curl cream, then water and Tesco mousse and plop for 20 minutes, then scrunch out the crunch when it's dry.

As someone said the cantu is quite heavy, but I only use a tiny amount.

QuentinSummers · 14/06/2017 07:29

Pink creme is curly girl safe (unless they have changed the ingredients)

Ollivander84 · 14/06/2017 08:06

Ingredient change Sad it's got a drying alcohol in it now

margaritasbythesea · 14/06/2017 08:19

Sorry for hijack but can anyone recommend a silicone free deep conditioner please? I do curly girl but my hair is still really dry. I've tried the masques on the British curlies website but no joy.

Hulder · 14/06/2017 08:26

Moroccanoil is just silicones. Marketing genius to convince people it's argan oil Angry

Very much not Curly Girl method.

How often you can get through without washing will depend on lots of factors, crucially the thickness of your hair. If you have fine hair, you will likely end up washing everyday or every other day as it will accumulate oil and flop. You probably will need a lowpoo rather than just co-washing with conditioner too.

I've got fine hair, I can go every other day washes. On non-wash days the stuff I did on the previous day sees me through i.e. no brushing, comb only with fingers, gel and dry naturally. I then have enough curl and body to go another day but if necessary spritzing with water will wake it up.

silkpyjamasallday · 14/06/2017 08:58

My hair is quite a lot more curly than yours but advice is the same for all textured hair really, my DP has Afro hair and does the same as me. I have silk pillowcases and a silk turban I wear in bed and it means my curls don't get matted and the ringlets stay nice for a good few days. I also use hair oil, current favourite from Show Beauty, smells amazing and good texture. Plain Moroccan oil is good too.

silkpyjamasallday · 14/06/2017 08:59

Kerastase curl cream is also really really good

littlebillie · 14/06/2017 13:56

Check out Cantu range it's in boots and it's very reasonably priced

daimbardiva · 14/06/2017 14:28

I think it's all a matter of trial and error as far as CG etc goes. I have wavy hair that can go curly or straighter depending on products, weather etc. I've found that cutting out sulphates and silicones, using less shampoo and more conditioner and washing less often (once every three days-ish) has made a big difference to condition and frizzibess. On non wash days I spritz w water (I used to put lavender oil in but don't bother now) to perk it up and sometimes use a wee bit of hair moisturiser. Lush' r and b is good and shea moisture's red tea one too.

I've tried all sorts of products - boots coconut shampoo and conditioner as good as any. I find I do need a small amount of shampoo or my hair gets greasy and lank the day after.

I like umberto gianni's curlfriends jelly, I also really like lush' s hair custard though finding it too heavy at the moment. Keracare do a good hair custard or pudding (some sort of dessert !) too.
