Where to find NICE boys clothes?

They all look bloody awful in the shops.

I found out DC was a DS last week and had a little cry about clothing options Hmm

I'm thinking for a baby first and foremost but also older children, too.

I love white, maybe grey and beige on babies so that's fine for blankets and baby grows etc. Not a fan of the Spanish baby clothes look either Confused It all looks badly made and very fussy.

But how about when they're a little older? Everything looks naff, all these stupid slogan tees.

All my styling ideas are going into his Christening gown, of which I'm getting made since we cannot find my Mum's.

I have a little boy (6 weeks) and I love his little bird by Jools outfits. They are a very colourful retro style and can be bought in Mothercare a s online.

Much preferred dressing my DS to my DD1 and DD2. Little Timberland boots and Ralph Lauren polo shirts.
Passing Monsoon this morning, they had the most gorgeous short sleeve shirt with little Land Rovers! Don't know how I managed to resist buying it the fact he was doing his economics alevel this week may have swayed me somewhat.

MrsAmaretto · 07/06/2017 22:14

It's been okay to find things for my son until recently - he's 7, but nearly 140cm so 9yr height. I'm struggling to find little boy clothes for skinny all boy!

But I've bought from

  • mini club (boots)
  • some Blue Zoo (Debenhams)
  • Sainsbury's
  • frugi
-boden
  • John Lewis
  • jeans with elasticated waists Next

My daughter is wearing a lot of my son's old clothes as they are gender neutral & better cloth than a lot of girls pink stuff

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 07/06/2017 23:16

I think it is easier to spend less on girls. Supermarkets do some lovely girls clothes but I struggle to find nice cheaper boy's clothes aside from the odd thing in Sainsbury's or Waitrose

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 07/06/2017 23:26

I am interesting to see Monsoon mentioned as they have so little in store when compared to girls. Often it is occasion wear too.

Somebody also mentioned that JoJo is quite limited . I have to admit that I rarely buy it new as it is so expensive. This summer our boy has some trousers from their in a few colours and a stripy hoody.

MrsJamesMathews · 07/06/2017 23:34

When my DSwas a baby I'd get his clothes from John Lewis and Gap and Boden.

Now he's 5 and I still get most of his stuff from Boden but also a few outfits from Joules or Monsoon. Occassionally the odd piece from Polarn o Pyret.

PickAChew · 07/06/2017 23:42

Mayoral is really weird stuff.

mumtomaxwell · 07/06/2017 23:44

I've got twin boys and they're 9. Their clothes now come from Next, Asda, Joules or Debenhams. Asda's jeans are better than anyone's - last for ages and are so cheap! They wrecked their Ted Baker and Junior J ones in just a few weeks.

My boys really love 'smart' shirts from places like Ted Baker or Joules.

I have a daughter too and thought it would be so much easier but actually it's not and the actual quality of her clothes is rubbish compared to her brothers'!

Blankscreen · 07/06/2017 23:53

ds is nearly 7.

We get bits from Frugi amd John Leeis and a lot from Fatface. It washes briiliantly my ds is wearing t shirts from last year and they still look.nice.
The hoodies are lovely and soft.

Starts at age 4.

burnishedsilver · 08/06/2017 00:08

Ds only wants to wear clothes with either Ninjago or Mincraft on them so that narrows the options considerably 😐

MrsPear · 08/06/2017 00:15

At the moment ds 7 is in

Underwear Next

Jogging bottoms and drawstring shorts Next as they actually pull in rather than decorative

Jeans, jumpers Polarn O Pyret

T shirts, fleece lined zip ups and swim shorts are Lands End

So three shops Hmm He browses and chooses. He has a thing for orange ...

DaisyFranceLynch · 08/06/2017 05:36

Most of my toddler son's clothes come from John Lewis but we also have bits and pieces from a lot of the shops mentioned above (lots from Ebay or occasionally TK Maxx).

Apart from those mentioned already, I really like Trotters - I don't think there are that many shops but they have a website (www.trotters.co.uk).

Very sweet, classic clothes which I think have a similar vibe to the Little White Company. They might have little pictures like a train or animal or soldier, but no garish patterns, characters or slogans. They have a lot of traditional "boy" colours - red, grey, navy/blues - but also some brighter colours, especially in summer.

In a similar style, Cath Kidston also has some nice classic pyjamas, tank tops etc.

Mummyamy123 · 08/06/2017 05:43

Jasper conran
John Lewis
Boden
Frugi ❤️
Cath Kidston

Teabagtits · 08/06/2017 05:52

I love how the brands mentioned are so expensive excluding those of us on low budgets. When stuck with choice of Asda or primary maybe H&M you're left with insipid blue or grey which is so depressing. Even the second hand sellers charge more for the desirable labels than buying new from cheap pkaces.

I'm tempted to make my own prints and clothes for baby boys as I get so sick of pastel and muted blues and bloody checked shirts. Colour ranges do seem to improve slightly post Baby years but then come the slogans.

In our local Asda there are 2.5 rows for baby girls clothes mostly pink but a wider variety of colours whereas boys get 1 row of blue and white dungarees. It's a shame as new parents want to buy for baby boys too!

NameChange30 · 08/06/2017 07:55

Teabag
I've seen some nice colourful baby clothes in Boots - they often have 3 for 2 offers as well.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 08/06/2017 09:23

I find shopping for ds, 3, surprisingly easy because I have to veto 95% of the clothes I see due to tacky slogans or awful colours so just pick the 5% left in bright plain colours.

OrlandoTheCat · 08/06/2017 09:59

ooo, I second Maxomorra too...

weebarra · 08/06/2017 10:03

My boys are 6 and 9. They wear Boden, Maxomorra, Metsola, Frugi, Fat Face, Lands End and Gap.
I buy a lot second hand or in sales.

relaxitllbeok · 08/06/2017 10:20

Don't think I've seen Jako-O mentioned but their stuff is good quality and good value. Really sad DS is about to be too tall for them!

TheWeeWitch · 08/06/2017 10:29

John Lewis is my go-to for my boys. I check online regularly for promotions and buy more expensive things like trousers and winter coats when they are on sale. The quality is very good so I'm re-using almost everything of ds1's for ds2.

Naughty1205 · 08/06/2017 10:32

Name it is brilliant for toddler clothes for boys, their clothes are super stretchy and so easy to get on a wriggling child. Also organic cotton. More expensive and not a massive selection but would buy everything there if I could afford it.

Ohyesiam · 08/06/2017 10:34

I've totally avoided all slogans, and pictures of stereotypical " boys " stuff, have got plain t-shirts from Matalan etc.
I'm not a huge Boden fan, but their boys stuff is their best range, and their look seems to be slowly seeping out into high street stuff.

I rarely pay even supermarket prices for my son's clothes because most of his wardrobe is second hand. It takes time to hunt the bargains but they are there

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 08/06/2017 13:55

@DaisyFranceLynch Trotters looks lovely

DaisyFranceLynch · 08/06/2017 14:17

@Tw1nsetAndPearls it is, and the clothes last for quite a long time, so good to pass on/buy secondhand.

I've found some good things in Asda too - shorts and t-shirts etc in plain bright colours.
