Where to find NICE boys clothes?

HGisme · 07/06/2017 11:56

They all look bloody awful in the shops.

I found out DC was a DS last week and had a little cry about clothing options Hmm

I'm thinking for a baby first and foremost but also older children, too.

I love white, maybe grey and beige on babies so that's fine for blankets and baby grows etc. Not a fan of the Spanish baby clothes look either Confused It all looks badly made and very fussy.

But how about when they're a little older? Everything looks naff, all these stupid slogan tees.

All my styling ideas are going into his Christening gown, of which I'm getting made since we cannot find my Mum's.

We have a 15 month old boy and we have just accepted that we can't buy him very much in store other than in John Lewis and JoJo - although the latter tends to be expensive. We buy in sales and second hand from the following places:
Little Bird
Maxomorra
JoJo
Boden
Frugi
Mayoral
Tutto Piccolo
Petit Bateau
POP
Pretty Originals
Ancar

SimplyNigella · 07/06/2017 16:15

I despise slogans and sludge coloured clothes so I do spend more on my son's clothes than I ever imagined I would, however they all have an excellent second hand value and sell well on Facebook groups (which is how I justify the cost).

DS is 3 and since a baby he has mainly worn brands like:

Mini Rodini
Bobo Choses
Tiny Cottons
Maxomorra
Smafolk
Beau Loves
Indikidual
Popupshop

For nursery he wears Zara, Gap and H&M as he gets far too messy to wear the decent stuff.

d270r0 · 07/06/2017 18:00

Monsoon has some lovely stuff but quite pricey.
Next usually has a nice selection too. Lots of choice if you look online.
Boden, again pricier.

KimKardashiansArse · 07/06/2017 18:27

John Lewis
Marks and Spencer

Nice clothes and decent quality.

Chrisinthemorning · 07/06/2017 18:39

DS wore a lot of Jojomananbebe when he was little.
I like him in Boden, Joules, Sainsbury's, John Lewis, Hatley and Frugi.
I never at full price for any of his clothes.

Chrisinthemorning · 07/06/2017 18:40

YY to Little Bird, we love their stuff, also Monsoon (usually via eBay)

wobblywonderwoman · 07/06/2017 18:46

I am in full agreement. Very hard to get nice stuff.

I tend to dress my two dcs (2&3) in clothes from next (plain t-shirts in packs of four) boots have nice long sleeve tops - foxes, orange and no silly slogans.

H&m and primark - non slogan types. Got a beautiful black jumper in h&m last year. I tend to find late August best for stocking up on nice clothing as crappy stuff a lot of the year.

Really lucky in matalan for boys trousers and Zara for something special- grandad caps or occassionwear that is not too grown man type.

Pants - tesco boxers wash great and some of their tops are OK.

mimarbia · 07/06/2017 20:00

It totally depends on what you have to spend, I love smart and occasion stuff from Boden, Monsoon and Jojo, for everyday I like H&M and Matalan have some surprisingly good stuff. From the supermarket range by far the best is Nutmeg from Morrisons. I don't see the point on spending loads for everyday clothes as they grow so quickly it doesn't last.

00alwaysbusymum · 07/06/2017 20:27

Sorry I disagree I've got two boys and love the clothes.

They wear Sainsbury's, gap, H&M, boden, next, primark & m&s. Loads of choice lots of colours.

Lovely shoes from geox

So much easier to dress than my daughter - I hate sickly pink and hate purple and you need so many colour tights/ shoes to go with everything, so much is not practical for playing outside

Pistachiois50pmore · 07/06/2017 20:36

I find the gendering of baby clothes maddening. Like, I just want a t-shirt. How is a plain white t-shirt covered in grey elephants "for girls"?

It just means you end up having to search any given website twice.

There is loads of good stuff out there that I happily dress my son in. I lean towards gender neutral but we wear a lot of navy too.

H&M for cotton basics (search both boys and girls, it's totally random how they divide it up)
GAP if you just want a plain pair of shorts
Little Bird for primary colours (doesn't change much season to season)
Indie brands like Turtledove, Tiny Cottons, Tobias and the Bear, Mini Rodini - often in sales, Instagram is a great way to find these

imjessie · 07/06/2017 20:37

I find it easy to dress my boy . Usually all from Next . You just avoid the slogan stuff and buy the plan stuff . Also h and m but only both online as the range is way better on line !

missyB1 · 07/06/2017 20:46

In afraid it just gets harder as they get older. Ds is now 8 and obviously grown out of jojo and also little white company (they only seem to be going up to 6 now). Basically I have to pay more to find nice clothes.
Joules
Gap
Some John Lewis stuff
Possibly the odd thing in Next

LoadsaBlusher · 07/06/2017 21:22

I get my DCs clothing from
H & M , Next and Zara.
I also hate slogans / characters/ cartoons / animals etc on their clothing.

I like plain , simple grey , black , Denim , white or khaki etc.

Pair this with white or black converse .

(They do get to wear wild and wacky pyjamas at bedtime and have a huge pyjama collection with Disney etc Grin)

But totally agree there is far more choice for girls and a lot of retailers think we want to clothe our boys in Full on character outfits or outfits emblazoned with whales / dogs / trucks

Not enough plain basics

MrsDustyBusty · 07/06/2017 21:27

Definitely frugi. The clothes are brilliant - bright and colourful and really fun. My toddler loves them, never refuses to wear. They are more expensive but wash and wear really well. The sizing is great too, we get ages out of everything.

I also like boden, jojo and molo.

Firenight · 07/06/2017 21:27

It's getting harder as DS approaches 8 but H&M are good, I buy white Tshirts to dye nice colours and make some things myself too. Family knit jumpers. We like cheerful colours in this house so just keep an eye out for things.

PickAChew · 07/06/2017 21:30

I don't think I've seen Landsend mentioned - lovely soft, hard wearing cottons, lots of bright colours and great sales. DS2 has got a few Landsend tops which actually survived his brother.

Fatface has some cute stuff.

I find Next much better for bottoms than tops. Their knitwear is still good, mind.

WhooooAmI24601 · 07/06/2017 21:39

Mine wore a lot of Polarn O Pyret, Gap, Zara, H&M, Boden and La Redoute when they were tiny. John Lewis' boys trousers, cords and jeans are utterly invincible, M&S pants, socks and vests never lose shape or colour and their pyjamas are usually those Next snuggle-fit ones (which, frankly, are the only thing worth buying from Next any more).

Now that they're older they wear a lot of Abercrombie, Hilfiger and Lauren stuff, with Gap jeans. DS1 has recently discovered River Island's boys range so he has a nasty pleather jacket from there he'd live in given chance.

NC4now · 07/06/2017 21:41

I've just discovered Abercrombie for my older boys.

Jfw82 · 07/06/2017 21:43

I was convinced ds was going to be a girl
Pre 20 week scan. Post scan it took a while but he has FAB clothes I love shopping for. My fave is the baby ted baker range at Debenhams (tho expensive so only bits!) also gap, next, John Lewis (including Waitrose) some m&s also (unexpectedly) peacocks for some of his t-shirts.
I sympathise in that I didn't 'get' shopping for boys and now I can I'm lucky to come home from town without something little for him these days!!

OrlandoTheCat · 07/06/2017 21:45

My fave brands for boys are:

Mayoral (Spanish) and Name It (Danish, I believe)

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 07/06/2017 21:46

My boys are older now, 19 & 15 but always shopped in John Lewis, marks and spencer, boden, joules and gap mainly.

Next can have some good stuff and even primark. I think is easy to avoid slogan tops and branded tracksuits. My goddaughter has just had a boy and I've been pleasantly surprised at the lovely stuff out there for small boys.

Oh H&M have some lovely clothing, zara and even Asda! Like with people avoiding link and sparkles with girls you just need to look around. Primark have great little striped tops without slogans.

NameChange30 · 07/06/2017 21:49

Frugi is my favourite. Also like Maxomorra and Joules. All three brands have bright colours and fun prints. I've got some nice stuff from John Lewis too (good quality neutrals).

I've avoided buying anything blue but we did get lots of blue clothes as presents (predictably) and it turns out blue does suit DS! Typical Grin I obviously do put him in blue but in other colours too.

AuntPol · 07/06/2017 21:52

Lands End often have some nice stuff (sign up to emails and wait for a big discount code!)

But on the whole, yes, boys clothes are terrible. I really struggle to find things for DS1 (10yo).

NameChange30 · 07/06/2017 21:55

I'm surprised so many people rate JoJo Maman Bébé. They have some very cute unisex babygrows, but the vast majority of their clothes are annoyingly gendered IMO. They even sell two different sets of wooden letters; "for girls" (pastel colours, mostly pink and purple) and "for boys" (strong colours, mostly blue and red) - why not one set of wooden letters in different colours?! Gah.

Sorry, rant over. I actually just wanted to add that I buy my Frugi clothes from Babipur, they often have sales/discounts and their customer service is very good.

SimplyNigella · 07/06/2017 21:58

I agree Name they are so pink and blue it drives me crazy.
