Is this dress too young for me?

I'm a (so I'm told Grin) young looking 40.

I showed a friend this dress and she said it's a bit mutton dressed as lamb.

I like it, dh says it looks great but now I'm a little paranoid.

Is this dress too young for me?

I think it's not about you're age, more if you've got the figure for it. Personally I would never pull it off, my boobs and strapless bras are not friends!

Juliancopescat · 05/06/2017 21:57

Op if you like it you should wear it.

That being said I'm 37 and would feel it's a bit young for me. It's not the length, it's the length plus the very trendy off the shoulder thing. I could wear it....but I wouldn't. Well maybe on a beach in Spain...maybe.

eurochick · 05/06/2017 22:06

I'm 41 and I think it looks a bit teenagery.

RickOShay · 05/06/2017 22:09

god well said Kate.

nina2b · 05/06/2017 22:10

The dress is aimed at teenagers. I think it would look wrong. Sorry!

PovertyJetset · 05/06/2017 22:14

I think if it suits you wear it. With some white trainers and a big raffia tote bag it would look great.

crazymissdaisy · 05/06/2017 22:18

I think the style would suit your shape! Go for it! Sometimes if "young" clothes are worn with more expensive accessories they somehow look totally fine, expensive looking sunglasses, raffia espadrilles, gold bracelet, raffia bag with a leather strap, glossy hair. With plastic flip flops its seems more "young" and more appropriate for the beach, but still nothing to stop you going for it!

neveradullmoment99 · 05/06/2017 22:22

I really dont like the dress. I think its really unflattering if you have a medium to large bust. It looks a bit tent like, so shapeless imo.
However, i think age has nothing to do with it. I dont even think it looks nice on the model.

Allthebestnamesareused · 05/06/2017 22:32

I thought it was a maternity dress so maybe be a bit careful if you say you have a bit if a tum!

PickAChew · 05/06/2017 22:36

I think it would look like a floral lampsade on anyone who isn't super thin and well toned. And not much better on anyone who is super slim and well toned.

apricotmoon · 05/06/2017 22:40

I personally do not subscribe to the whole "mutton dressed as lamb" point of view because to me it's more about the individual's style/shape than some preconceived notion as to what type of clothes suit what age ranges. However, that being said, I'm not a fan of that dress. Something with a tapered waist and flared skirt will look more universally flattering IMO.

BringMeTea · 05/06/2017 22:46

No way are you too old. Wear what makes YOU happy.

RhythmAndStealth · 05/06/2017 22:49

If it suits you, go for it.

I don't think cold shoulder is super trendy, it's been around for about three summers now. As such it's definitely more "it's sunny and I'm not dead yet" than reserved for youngsters only.

I think it's because they've become something that looks summery and relaxed without being overtly sexy sexy (e.g. Legs or boobs out).

And no-one needs friends who compare women to livestock.

pieceofpurplesky · 05/06/2017 22:52

If it is for holiday/beach then great. If it is for drinks in town then it is a bit young.
I work with teens and some of them wouldn't wear it as not sophisticated enough! We can't win Smile

AcrossthePond55 · 05/06/2017 23:01

If you have the body for it, why not? I think what makes it look 'too young' in the photo is the shoes. Dress and trainers says 'teenager' to me. Just wear different shoes (strappy low sandals, maybe?) and I think you'll look fine.

squoosh · 05/06/2017 23:02

It's the kind of thing I'd wear if I was going undercover as a lampshade from the 1970s.

It would be okay I suppose on the beach paired with some sandals. Not sure it would work worn with heels out and about in town. Very billowy and shapeless.

AteRiri · 05/06/2017 23:36

I think it's fine.

lobsterface · 05/06/2017 23:40

I'm late 20s and it's too young for me...

burnishedsilver · 05/06/2017 23:41

Looks ok to me.

TheDowagerCuntess · 06/06/2017 05:58

Looking at the pic, the model's waist is the largest part of her silhouette.

My thought process is, if it looks like that on a beautiful, lithe young thing, then what hope us mere mortals.

defineme · 06/06/2017 06:06

I think it's a perfectly ordinary pretty dress and, if it suits you, can see no reason not to wear it. Cold sholder is hardly a teen trend. I think negative posters are projecting the fact that it won't suit many people because it's not figure hugging anywhere and the model has trainers on...switch to converse and it looks like something most age 30/40 mums were wearing on my school run in the heat we had recently.

Floisme · 06/06/2017 07:10

When someone says a dress doesn't suit you then I think it's worth listening. When they say it's too young then I find there's normally something else going on and that 'something' is often more about them than it is about you.

It's hard for us to tell whether that dress would suit you because 40 is an age, not a look. It would show off your legs but might also draw attention to your stomach and bum. But, if you were happy with it before your friend's piece of snippery then I would trust your instincts. We all have opinions but anyone who talks about women as if they're pieces of meat is not someone whose opinion I would worry about.

Tanfastic · 06/06/2017 07:17

I'm 44 and I'd wear it if it suited me. But probably only on holiday with well thought out accessories.

It really depends if it suits your figure and what you wear it with. We'd need a pic of you in it to make a final judgment Grin

FreakinScaryCaaw · 06/06/2017 07:21

It'd suit someone short, slim and petite.

I don't think age matters too much.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 06/06/2017 07:23

Yes take a photo. Not necessarily to post here but I find it gives you a better idea.
