Are fascinators still in fashion?

Going to a wedding, don't want to wear a hat so bought one & now very unsure how to wear & does it look silly! Long straight layered hair with side fringe I'm wearing down.

Help!

Errr.......... not really.

miwelaisjacydo · 03/06/2017 19:18

Depends on what it looks like really.

OlennasWimple · 03/06/2017 19:18

Short answer is no

The longer answer is that the little, half-hearted fascinators much beloved of women of a certain age who thought that they were being youthful by having a fascinator rather than a hat were never fashionable and are now quite naff. The big ones that are practically hats (check the Royal Ascot dress code for sizes etc) can be lovely if they a) match your outfit and b) match your hair / face

birdspooping · 03/06/2017 19:19

Can you show us a photo of said fascinator?

taybert · 03/06/2017 19:19

They get slagged off on here all the time. I don't think they are fashionable. There will be loads of people wearing them though. I have a theory that wedding fashion is a bit different to normal fashion.

Any other ideas for my hair instead?

I think it's nice, I've seen that one in real life and I think its very pretty

DirtyBlonde · 03/06/2017 22:10

Fairly substantial fascinators are fine.

Wispy ones which, like clips, make it look as if something random has just landed on your head, probably aren't the best look.

TheFaerieQueene · 03/06/2017 22:10

I haven't ever liked them.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/06/2017 22:49

I don't like them at all (apart from well matched almost-a-hat ones). I'd go bareheaded rather than wear a flimsy one.

ThouShallNotPass · 03/06/2017 23:01

I like them. They make me feel all weddingy. Wink Nothing wrong with going all out for an event I reckon.

bojorojo · 04/06/2017 00:57

The saucer hat as worn by Carole Middleton is fine. They are held in place by a headband. A pill box is fine. Royal Ascot requires a 4 inch crown for a hat.

I think the one you have linked to is a bit flimsy. Wear nothing in your hair or get a decent hat. Royal
Ascot starts on 20 June so check out the photos. Or last year if your google. Quite a few good looks at The Derby today.

Nettletheelf · 04/06/2017 00:58

Can you return it?

Buy a 'hatinator' instead (see Oleanna's post). That peach fascinator just looks a bit tentative and apologetic. If you aren't bothered about being fashionable, fine, wear it ( you asked whether fascinators were fashionable). If you are bothered, wear something different. You can do better.

Hotwaterbottle1 · 04/06/2017 05:35

Thanks all. I'd like to look fashionable but can never quite pull it off! I'm going to a wedding where I know no one except my partner in Essex and so have no clue what other guests will wear! I'm also on a budget of very little!!

This is the dress which I love, looks nice on & dressy with gold accessories.

I wore one for my sons wedding in April, it looked great. But I opted for quite a big hat type one.
Debenhams have some lovely ones.

Your dress is very pretty, don't detract from it with that peach fascinator.

Almahart · 04/06/2017 07:29

That's a lovely dress, the fascinator is too small and fussy for it

MrsDc7 · 04/06/2017 07:30

I don't mind fascinators but I don't think that colour dress with gold jewellery needs it. I also don't think the peach will go massively well with the dress, especially if your shoes and bag are also another colour

goldenretriever1978 · 04/06/2017 07:31

No. I went to a wedding this week in the South West and only a few women over 60 (and me 😶) wore them.

Millybingbong · 04/06/2017 07:34

I think you need to put your hair up in a chignon, but you get need to practice.

mistermagpie · 04/06/2017 07:38

That dress is fashionable, the fascinator is mimsy and just not.

You need something bigger and more hat-like. Like my first image below maybe (you can find nicer, that was just a quick Google for the idea). With your dress though I would be tempted to go the full 70s floppy hat like the second image!

I would take your cue from those 'women of a certain age'. They may not be at the cutting edge of fashion but they've probably been to more weddings than you have and learned (as Taybert) says that the normal rules of fashion or even good taste don't apply.

Wearing at least one silly thing at a wedding is just basic good manners. Look at the bride - are you really going to leave her to wear that ridiculous outfit all on her own?

Hotwaterbottle1 · 04/06/2017 13:59

Lol Flo! I think I'm going to take it back and just not bother!

Love the dress, hate the fascinator, sorry OP

I wouldn't try to match that colour - unless it's perfect, it will look a little odd. A contrasting, big fascinator like this could work.

If you aren't feeling that brave, a lovely hair band or hair clip (depending on how you are going to wear your hair) would be nice and more dressy than a normal posh outfit
