Are these dresses too Boobylicious for a meeting?

UnGoogleable · 02/06/2017 11:57

I've recently changed jobs, and while my usual work clothes are very much casual (skinny and jumper, or tunic dress with leggings and boots), I need to attend a few meetings which will need something more 'smart casual'.

I've also recently got my figure back, and kind of want to celebrate that a bit rather than perpetually hiding under baggy tunics. I'm 5ft10 size 12, decent set of boobs but also still a bit of a tum which needs disguising.

I've been looking at these:

Navy Blue Pencil Dress

Green V neck dress

Red Bow dress

I'm a big fan of that particular brand, as I have a couple of their dresses already (see my previous thread here!), so I know they fit ok. But are they a bit too 'sexy' for a work meeting??

I'm also keen on trying the cigar trousers / top look, but I don't know what to wear on top that doesn't look frumpy.

Any suggestions?

Those look extremely formal to me but it depends which industry you're in?

Hoppinggreen · 02/06/2017 12:02

I like the dresses but in a formal environment I wouid worry about boobage ( mine are quite large)

UnGoogleable · 02/06/2017 12:05

Civil Service. But most people dress casually for normal work. High level meetings, people might wear a pencil skirt or wrap dress, but others will also wear jeans and a blouse.

The men usually wear jeans and a shirt. Is this overdoing it then?

One of the meetings, I'll also be going straight out for dinner afterwards, so I want the look to carry through to evening. I was thinking of adding a casual jacket like a denim jacket or something.... but is it still a bit too over the top?

Also, I don't have great legs, so I'd want tights. Maybe it's a bit too much faff.

Yeah Boobage might be a bit much for a meeting

Also sweat patches. I'm a sweaty person and will have to travel by public transport to get there. I will inevitably get a sweat on... and then I get cold once sitting in a meeting. I need flexibility.

Would skinny trousers with heels and a nice top be better?

The dresses look fine to me!

Ditsy1980 · 02/06/2017 12:11

They're all lovely but the red one is lush! That would work well for going out afterwards too.
Very va-va-voom though, I had a lower level HMRC job once and never saw higher managers etc in dresses like that.

Girlywurly · 02/06/2017 13:02

They're all lovely, and I don't think any of them look especially booby. Thanks for linking to that brill site as well, OP - I can feel my credit card twitching!!

I don't really get the anxiety about boobage: you're a woman, you have a job AND breasts. So what? But then I'm flat as a pancake so WTF do I know?! Grin

UnGoogleable · 02/06/2017 13:53

The red one is a bit more modest isn't it, so I might get away with that without looking too 'Hey Boys!'

Yeah, I know what you mean Girly - why do women have to hide their curves, I don't know. But I'm also conscious that some of the other women at the meeting might be a bit more understated in their clothes, so it might come across as a bit much if I turn up in a tight fitting dress.

Any suggestions on tops to go with skinny trousers then to broaden my options??

Hi. I'm 44 with 34ff boobs. Go to formal meetings in public sector. Depending on fit I would wear the first two, third not my style but nothing wrong with it. My rule is no actual cleavage, but I've got boobs and folk can get over it Smile.
I see a wide range of dress at these meetings, these fit within. Good luck

Hoppinggreen · 02/06/2017 14:06

No issue with announcing I have boobs while at work ( not much choice with mine) but I don't do cleavage in the same way I wouldn't do a bum crack!! Also, a lot of people are taller than me so looking straight on in a mirror my boobs might not be too much on show but from above or leaning forward they probably wouid in those dresses.
Don't think it looks professional

originalbiglymavis · 02/06/2017 14:10

Lovely. If you've got good posture then they will look lovely and office smart if you go ain on the accessories and make-up.

I'm amazed when I go onto the city these days at the shoes the young 'uns wear - sky high party shoes (in my day you'd get told off for wearing these).

burnishedsilver · 02/06/2017 14:12

They're lovely dresses but they're not "smart casual'. They wouldn't look out of place at a wedding.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/06/2017 14:21

Surely sweating is an issue, if you're a sweaty person, you're going by public transport (TUBE? ) and you may be in tights, and you're a bit self conscious. There is a lot of polyester in some of those dresses!

Yes, I routinely look at the polyester content of all clothes.

EmmaC78 · 02/06/2017 14:29

Think they look fine. They are probably not smart casual but always better to be slightly over dresed than underdressed and I am sure you would look fab in them.

QuackDuckQuack · 02/06/2017 14:46

The last one is a bit air stewardess for me. The others are nice, but perhaps a bit smart compared to what the others are wearing.

Ladyformation · 02/06/2017 14:49

Ooh I like them all. I'd always rather be one notch overdressed too though.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 02/06/2017 14:54

I think they look great. The red one is beautiful. I work in the civil service and it's a real mixed bag clotheswise - I wear swing style dresses most days but have colleagues who wear jeans and t shirts.

OlennasWimple · 02/06/2017 14:58

I don't think they look like they would put your cleavage on display, but they are very close fitting and will show every lump and bump. So if you want to disguise a tummy, you might need Spanx underneath, and they will accentuate your bum very much.

Personally, I think they are not very civil service office appropriate (though they are lovely for the right setting)

Trousers, top and great shoes is a safer combo, or there are lots of other lovely day dresses that would work as well

UnGoogleable · 02/06/2017 15:34

Ok mixed result, I'm thinking they might be a tad too overdressed for the setting that I'm likely to be in. Although I love them, and I really want one!!

So any suggestions on decent top / trousers combos? Or other day dresses?

90% of my wardrobe is jumpers, so I really don't have anything to wear!! eeek!

I have a pair of trousers that are a bit like these:

Slim leg trousers

But they end higher up the calf. So I could potentially do those with some heels and a smart top... but what kind of top is appropriate?

Dafspunk · 02/06/2017 15:37

Kind of off-topic but I think it's good to occasionally dress smartly when you don't particularly need to because one day you may want to sneak off to an interview.

But I'm all devious like that.

UnGoogleable · 02/06/2017 16:01

Daf good devious skills there - I often wonder how I would do that, since I usually wear jeans to work. So if I came in wearing interview clothes, I'd stand out like a sore thumb. So yeah, I can see how with a bit of careful groundwork by making interview clothes the new norm, you could hide in plain sight Wink

OlennasWimple · 02/06/2017 16:07

What's your budget OP?

specialsubject · 02/06/2017 16:07

Cleavage of any sort has no place in an office, but don't think those would show that. However for a smelly sweaty badly ventilated modern office, dresses are impractical.

UnGoogleable · 02/06/2017 16:14

Hmm yeah cleave and sweat, not a good look.

So what about a pencil skirt Pencil Skirt with a more sweat friendly / cleavage controlling top?

I absolutely HATE 'blouses' of any type, so I'm a bit stuck here...
