Does anyone else have really thick hair

Hi does anyone else have really thick hair - and lots of it?
If so what sort of hairstyle do you go for?
I tried to grow my hair long but find it more flattering shorter. Shoulder length - all the same length -doesn't work at all for me.

Yes.

I've all sorts over the years but find that having it long (it reaches my back bra strap) and layered works best for me.

The length helps weigh it down and the layers take out a lot of bulk.

When it's shorter I tend to get a triangle head iyswim as it just fans outwards unless I use huge amounts of product and straightners - which quite frankly I'm too lazy to do and it just wrecks my hair.

Ktown a hairdresser once told me that using the razor on thick coarse hair wasn't good, I don't know how true this is though!

MrsJamin · 04/06/2017 07:12

What shampoo / conditioner /serums do you all find work well? I just tried some shampoo & American dream conditioner from lush which was dreadful, unfortunately, I think I'll take it back to the shop. I like their pre-washing fluff-ease stuff though.

I have really thick hair. I find Cloud 9 Magic Potion significantly reduced my drying time although I do now section it to dry too. I got a parlux hairdryer and I can get a good finish without straightening if I out a bit of time in. I swear by Morrocan Oil too. I use it after blow drying and I put a smidge through my ponytail ends too.
I love Loreal Ultimate Liss deep conditioner too.

Oh well I have been having a little razoring towards the ends of my long layers for years!
I really like cheap sulphate free shampoos and Aussie conditioners
For me it was hairspray that really makes the difference

Me too, I have boob length hair with lots of layers. I never dry it with a hairdryer as it takes too long, I wash it at night and it's almost dry in the morning. It's in great condition and I just use whatever shampoo/conditioner is on offer. For years I styled it with an uber large curling tong but have recently switched to large rollers that are a lot quicker. just put them in go and eat breakfast when I take them out my hair is done. My hair is my thing.

I have enough hair for at least five people, but for the first time in my life I'm happy enough with how it looks.

The first thing that happened was I got a new hairdresser, who suggested thinning my hair using a technique called slithering which removes the bulk (can also be done with thinning scissors for the same effect).

The second thing I discovered was the Curly Girl method, and now I realise that the frizz I've been fighting all my adult life is actually a strong wave and the SLS in my shampoo was making it frizzy. I've got SLS free shampoo (and silicone free conditioner) and my hair is a hundred times better, and I wear it down every day now.

I would definitely recommend both!

Mine's wild unless I use straighteners on it. So it's either long, layered and straight, or in a messy bun or gym braids.

Cellardoor23 · 04/06/2017 12:31

My hair is a real pain. I have fine hair, but lots of it. Continuously shreads ( it gets everywhere) even with regular hair cuts. It's wavy, but frizzy wavy rather than nice healthy curls. Plus my roots get greasy the next day after washing, but the ends are still very dry.

I straighten my hair, which I know probably isn't helping, but I can't seem to get out of the cycle! It's just below my shoulders now, but I'm thinking of getting it cut a lot shorter, maybe into a long bob.

I found layers helped, but I still feel the need to straighten it as my hair can get quite flat at the top then bush out at the bottom.

Cellardoor23 · 04/06/2017 12:35

Meant to add I bought a conditioning treatment from Philip Kingsley called Elasticizer and I've noticed that my hair isn't as dry at the ends anymore. It's still not great, but seems to be a bit of an improvement!

specialsubject · 04/06/2017 12:40

Thick and fuzzy - and no one makes products to make hair thinner.

Thank goodness for wella straight and xtenso. I am no longer remembered only for my hair!

HairsprayQueen · 04/06/2017 14:31

I bought some thinning scissors today and have watched a few tutorials on YouTube.

Haven't quite built up the guts to have a go yet but probably will tomorrow.

shesabrick · 04/06/2017 14:50

I have absolutely no experience of this and I am envious of you all as I have the complete opposite problem.

However a family member of mine is like you and has taken the, somewhat drastic, step of getting an undercut. While if I'm honest (although wouldn't say to her) I really don't like how it looks underneath, her hair now looks AMAZING when she wears it down as it's quite long and now sits beautifully without the bulk. And she can pin it back in a low ponytail which looks fine too.

ahipponamedbooboobutt · 04/06/2017 15:00

Yup ridiculously thick hair here too. Every hairdresser I've ever been to has commented on how thick it is, like it's some kind of blessing. I'm sure it will be when I'm older (my 87yr old Nan still has thick hair that isn't completely grey!) but I used to really hate it.
It's naturally wavy so I keep it long. Currently down to my bra band. That way I can just tie it back. I have tried being shorted before but that always needs styling and I don't always have the time with 4dc and a full time job!

HairsprayQueen · 04/06/2017 16:02

So I've just thinned out half a carrier bag full of hair (and it's only down to my shoulders so that's not made out of length).

It still looks as thick as ever I reckon, goodness knows how! I've given it a wash now though so I'll see how it dries, dh says it looks thinner but he'll just say whatever he thinks is the right answer sometimes!

RhythmAndStealth · 04/06/2017 16:11

Mine is curly til it's chin length, then is bushy/wavy til my shoulder blades, and is straight when longer than that. So I just need the weight of long hair or it's a nightmare. It takes ages to dry, and I don't like using the hair dryer on it as it dries out the ends. Upside is it only needs washing every 2-3 days when it's longer.

Recently realized though that if I wash it just before I go out, I can just jump straight in the car and put the heater and fan on, cuts the drying time right down. Need to be in the car for 30 minutes at least though. But I live rurally so that's pretty much a given anyway.

raindropstea · 04/06/2017 18:24

I have very thick hair and I keep my hair long. Right now I barely have any layers, but I prefer to have some subtle long layers. All one length and shoulder length would be horrendous on me. It tends to take on what I call the "Christmas tree" effect... you know how it looks thicker at the ends when it's all one length... really bulky looking. The problem is, I find not many hairdressers really know how to cut thick hair well. Only washing it about 3x a week instead of every day also helps tame it and calm it down iykwim. :)

angelcakerocks · 04/06/2017 21:21

I've got thick hair too, a bit wavy bit straight Confused and what has really worked for me is a blowdryer brush thingy - it's like a big paddle brush which blowdries basically (Revlon perfectionist) Cuts down my drying time and hair looks much better. Worked a lot better than the BBH which is a faff and dried my hair out too much.
