Does anyone else have really thick hair

Hi does anyone else have really thick hair - and lots of it?
If so what sort of hairstyle do you go for?
I tried to grow my hair long but find it more flattering shorter. Shoulder length - all the same length -doesn't work at all for me.

Layers are your friend. Get a good hairdryer and a big, round brush (or a Bayliss Big Hair)

Invest in a good hair cut every six weeks and get your stylist to recommend shampoo and conditioner (it does really make a difference).

You wear your hair every day - it's worth spending some money on.

TizzyDongue · 01/06/2017 06:07

I do too.

Have a choppy Bob at the moment - last cut the hairdresser cut the layers too short of me so I look awful!! They stick out and I can't get them to stop looking like I've a mushroom.

I've a double crown too. This really doesn't help!!

I'd say it's only a matter of a few cms so I'm hoping it won't be too long before it grows to the no mushroom length.

Yes, it's a lovely thing to have inherited from a long line of thick haired women! Collar bone length works for me, layered with weight taken out. Babylis big hair is awesome, though takes a little practice!

BusterGonad · 01/06/2017 07:12

Mine is thick, course and wavy! It's the longest it's been in ages but it's very knotty and I just can't handle it. It needs a cut and I'm getting it sorted at the end of the month!

Long bouncy layers seem to be the only thing that suit my hair but it takes a good couple of hours to dry and style properly.

Greycat11 · 01/06/2017 07:29

Yep I've got really thick hair and wish I hadn't. Takes ages to dry, takes more than one box to dye, very annoying.
Tend to bung it up now a lot in a butterfly clip (choice of one for thick hair from Clares Accessories, a standard one is no good for my hair.)

summerbreeze1 · 01/06/2017 07:30

Wow!! I really didn't expect so many replies. I know we should be blessed to have thick hair as at least we can try and do something wi it - as opposed to people with thin hair who can't - I had the hideous triangle/lego haircut last salon I went to. Lego made me laugh.
Ladies who were brave enough to post photos thanks your hair all looks in lovely condition.
Maybe shampoo/conditioner is key but I haven't been able to find one yet.

Even worse in the summer as soon as there is a hint of humidity, just a frizzy mess.

Chaby · 01/06/2017 07:36

Struggle with shampoo and conditioner as my hair is thick but gets really greasy at the roots

BusterGonad · 01/06/2017 07:43

Ha ha Op, mine is in hideous condition, I'm currently living in the desert and it's dry, matted and I'm in desperate need of Ausie 3 minute miracle and I can't find it anywhere. I've been using cheap box dyes too and they've ruined my hair!!!

imjessie · 01/06/2017 08:09

This is my hair 😬

My hair is pretty wavy and thick. I find it needs length to avoid logo hair. My most successful hairstyle is:

Graduated bob, stopping between chin and shoulder length. I use bed head Dumb Blonde shampoo and conditioner and a lot of their after party serum too.

I think a lot of it comes down to having a good hairdresser. I've had some atrocious cuts to this length but when I found someone who "got" thick hair then it's been great.

CocoLoco87 · 01/06/2017 09:17

My hair is long, thick and frizzy. It's a nightmare :( im growing it after an unfortunate bob nightmare experience a year ago

BoredOnMatLeave · 01/06/2017 09:27

Yep thick long and a bit frizzy here. Lego man when its shorter. It looks nice when I spend time on it but I don't have time to wash, dry and style with a 1 year old as it takes well over an hour. Sometimes I leave the house with it slightly wet thinking I am looking very beach babe chic, only to look in the mirror and hour later and cry.

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 01/06/2017 09:39

Mine is a Vic Beckham style Pob at the moment. It's chin length at the back and cut really short - shaved - at the back. My hairdresser always spends longer cutting into and ruining my hair once he's cut the style than actually cutting the shape in.

ButtonLoon · 01/06/2017 09:45

Thick and med-curly. I like short and layered and have it undercut at the back only to take out volume. It sticks out but the layers stop it from going all triangle.

Brogadoccio · 01/06/2017 09:52

Barchester, i thought that was the back of my head.

Tricks ive tried in the past; getting a thinning scissors and thinning the underneath section. You know, not as severe as an undercut but going through that nape of your head section of hair layer by layer thinning it with a thinning scissors. I like the effect, it sits well, not like a big triangle, but hair dressers will reprimand you for going rogue

HairsprayQueen · 01/06/2017 10:14

brog I'm tempted by that- how does it work in a hair up though, will I have lots of choppy bits falling down or sticking out?

ThisisrealityGreg · 01/06/2017 10:22

My hair dresser thins my hair through the underneath which helps. I tend to just have mine all one length-ish. If I have proper layers I would have to style it properly whereas I just tend to blast it with the hairdryer to get it straight ish.

I hated having thick hair for years but now I'm in my late 40s I'm really happy about it as my granny who also had really thick hair and is now 98 still has a decent head of hair - she wears it short but has never had to perm it.

ThisisrealityGreg · 01/06/2017 10:23

Oh and I use L'Oreal lipidium which isn't cheap but is really good.

summerbreeze1 · 01/06/2017 13:02

Here's mine after about an hour of straightening. Am going to a new hairdresser tomorrow so am hopeful she can do something better with it.

Hairspray, i section off a cm of hair around the area i thin so when i put it up it looks normal. No bits hanging out. It works well for me because my hair is mutantly thick but i warn you, hairdressers will react in horror!!

banivani · 01/06/2017 13:49

Me too. It's difficult to style ... I'd like to go quite short but I think I'd end up looking like a toilet brush, everything on end - unless I cut it every week and I can't afford that! If I grow it long it just hangs really flat with the weight, and it has to be verrry long to be able to put up in anything besides a ponytail. :/ Atm it's kind of bob length. It's just growing out to the length of lying heavy and flat. eyeroll

Ktown · 01/06/2017 13:52

Course thick hair
Long layers - really long ones though
And also razored a bit
Length weighs it down in a good way
I use hairspray so it is less pouffy!
