Wedding outfit - will this do?

We have a wedding to go to over Easter, and I've totally failed to sort out clothes.

I have a white dress with lots of grey swirly stuff on it (doesn't look like a wedding dress!), and some beading. It's below-knee length. Empire waist, short sleeves. I have, somewhere, a big black and white hat, from another wedding. And I have some black Mary Janes. I guess I'd buy white tights? Not sure what to do there, don't think I can go without tights, the wedding is Easter and England.

Anyway, does this sound formal enough? The dress is here .

Wouldn't have white tights personally - I am scared of them (not sure why). I'd go for nude tights myself.
I think that sounds formal enough. Would you wear something over the dress?Might still be chilly at easter.

oooggs · 17/03/2007 19:31

I think it looks fine and I really like it. Not sure of white tights though

brimfull · 17/03/2007 19:35

no to white tights, you'll look like an american nurse.
Mary janes ?? are they flat.
Better off ith heels or knee high boots imo.

dress is lovely btw

LaDiDaDi · 17/03/2007 19:38

Dress is lovely but definitely no to white tights, not sure about the shoes either to be honest.

Ceolas · 17/03/2007 19:38

Dress is lovely. I'd go for a heel personally and what about black very sheer tights?

chocolateshoes · 17/03/2007 19:41

Love the dress, def not white tights though, & yes to heels. How about a black shrug or bolero to go with? Monsoon have got quite a good range.

MrsBadger · 17/03/2007 19:41

lovely dress!
sheer nude tights (ie looks like you're not wearing any)

white tights are not done at all in the UK - have never understood why they're so big elsewhere as they're monstrously unflattering.

Have the shoes a heel and/or any inkling of delicateness or are they chunky?

janeite · 17/03/2007 19:43

Love the dress. No, no, no to white tights! Nude fishnets could look nice with the Mary Janes.

PeachyClair · 17/03/2007 19:45

Depending on the white tights, you will either look like you just had leg surgery or have severe cyanosis. Avoid!

Definitely think about a wrap- accesorize have nice ones, but so does E-Bay for a quick and cheap fix. Maybe some kind of pashmina shawl (about 8 quid on ebay ime).

Heels definitely, for a wedding.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 19:46

I am very very pale, so 'nude' tights generally scary, aren't they?

The shoes are flat, look a bit like ballet shoes I guess? I have v big feet, and will be chasing after DS1 and DS2, so heels aren't really an option (also, haven't worn heels in 10 years or something!).

I have some wrap type things that would work, or maybe a cardie, will have a dig. Not a huge fan of shrugs etc.

I'll have a look for tights that would work. I only own opaque black, which I know wouldn't go with this.

(if you want a black pash I have a spare one I brought home from a party I didn't take one to)

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 19:47

Oh, the shawls I can think of are:

  • purpley, silky
  • grey, woolen
  • white, with sequins
  • purple with gold bits (Indian)
Sure there are more.

(I never wear any of them. Go figure.)

MrsBadger · 17/03/2007 19:50

good dept stores will have a range of 'nude' colours - and the finer they are the less scarily coloured they look once you get them on.

brimfull · 17/03/2007 19:50

couldn't you wear just a little heel?

PeachyClair · 17/03/2007 19:50

Depending on shade obv, I'd go purple for a sht of colour but you might want to keep it monochrome.

Kitten heels? No height but some heel.

But ballet shoes should be OK.

Nude always better than white imo, but there are loads of more delicate shades and designs around atm, even in Asda.

MrsBadger · 17/03/2007 19:51

the grey sounds most likely - let the pattern of the dress do the work.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 19:52

I really like my flat shoes - I have had some weird leg/foot problems, so flat is really better. They are pretty orthopedic, these shoes, but pretty nonetheless.

I do own some reasonably comfortable heels, will see how they feel before the day, maybe take two pairs of shoes? We're staying in the hotel the wedding is happening in, so changing shoes might be an option.

The dress is really sweet. I didn't buy it specifically for the wedding, but it fits very well and is really pretty. It was actually linked to by someone here when I had a 'find dresses for me' moment, and I rejected it because of the trim. But when I tried it on, I changed my mind!

We have a Black Tie do (maybe White Tie?) later the same month, might wear this dress for it again? Or I could dig something out of the closet.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 17/03/2007 20:00

don't think it'd cut it for black tie (and no way for white tie)
ideal for wedding though

NB MyTights has a fab 'find by colour' feature where you tell it your skintone (English rose, tanned, Asian etc) and it finds the tights that best match your legs

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 20:02

It's black tie. I need a longer dress? Or what?

I do still have a ball gown, must try it on.

Other options:

  • get my wedding dress dyed. It's empire line, silk, long, simple.
  • I have a black shift with beads. It's ok. Long. Not that nice, though.
  • go shopping (ugh)
OP posts:
LaDiDaDi · 17/03/2007 20:04

I would really hesitate to get your wedding dress dyed.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 20:06

Arse, there's at least a 1" gap on the ball gown, at my ribcage. Unlikely to be fixed in a month, that. Pity, because it's lovely.

I have a black silk mannish sort of suit that might work? But I guess I really need a bow tie etc too?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 20:07

Oh, my plan was always to get it dyed, it's in silk so it's dyable.

Problem is, I was an 18 back then, am now a 14/16, so it might not fit anyway.

OP posts:
PeachyClair · 17/03/2007 20:07

What size are you, for black tie dresses ?

LaDiDaDi · 17/03/2007 20:09
