Wedding outfit - will this do?

We have a wedding to go to over Easter, and I've totally failed to sort out clothes.

I have a white dress with lots of grey swirly stuff on it (doesn't look like a wedding dress!), and some beading. It's below-knee length. Empire waist, short sleeves. I have, somewhere, a big black and white hat, from another wedding. And I have some black Mary Janes. I guess I'd buy white tights? Not sure what to do there, don't think I can go without tights, the wedding is Easter and England.

Anyway, does this sound formal enough? The dress is here .

I'll try on the fancy silk outfit. It is lovely. The shop is so nice, I went in, tried on something and it wasn't quite right, so they just made me one to my spec, same price. Really nice place.

I have to try to get some lacy camisole type thing as part of my shopping spree, so I can wear low cut things without dying. (not that this would work with the silk thing, obviously)

Oooh, found this . Not sure about the ribbon, but otherwise perfect ...

Oh dear, and I found this ...

this from a woman who hates shopping...

Debenhams one looks good - won't date and will be useful for further weddings, black tie dos etc. And the ribbon comes off.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/03/2007 12:47

I see your strategic lack of comment on retro ebay dress ... I'm still tempted to buy it though ... It's already dated, so it can't get more dated, right?

I do hate shopping, but this isn't shopping, it's web browsing.

(I got contacts today! I might stop wearing glasses! It's all very strange.)

Didn't feel qualified to comment on the ebay dress!

I have contacts for special occasions only (don't need specs for peering at computer at work) but they're a bit selfdefeating as I only wear them when going out, which usually means I'm wearing makeup and drinking... and getting contacts in whilst doing eye makeup and out when you're drunk is less than ideal.

and web browsing is shopping

(I've just discovered the newly-released Next summer matwear collection and earmarked this on the grounds I might have the norks to keep it up by July)

Formal mat wear is a nightmare, well particularly if you're biggish. I had a wedding to go to when 7 months or so with DS2. Ended up with a bright red sleeveless stretchy dress (with bolero), really really nice, if slightly loud.

I used to own some v strange vintage polyester stuff. Very hard wearing, and interesting-looking.

I am v v shortsighted, -6 I think? So I wear glasses or contacts all the time. Haven't worn contacts on a regular basis for ten or eleven years - kinda damaged my eyes by overwearing. Hoping I will be more sensible now, I spend less time staring at computers now, and anyway, contacts are better, so combination ... hopefully ...

Contacts are so much better than glasses for cycling, and probably for running, too.

currently scouring ebay for said formal matwear - will be 7.5 and 8months for Henley and a wedding respectively - and can't quite bring myself to shell out £140 for this unless it actually makes me look like Rachel Weisz (unlikely).

skirmish · 19/03/2007 16:52

sorry to jump in on your thread, but have you tried 'isabelleoliver' for mat dresses mrsB? they do some lovely dresses and have sale items all year round

MrsBadger · 19/03/2007 16:55

oh yes, skirmy, have bookmarks in all the normal places (IO, Crave, Push, HomeMummy, FunMummy, Seraphine, Formes, Blooming Marvellous, La Redoute, Vertbaudet, JoJo etc etc) but am still keeping my eyes open.

Am also cheapskate which doesn't help.

skirmish · 19/03/2007 16:57

well, if you are a cheapskate head to debenhams...i got a lovely black/white patterned empire lined dress from there last year (bargain price £35) which saw me thru 3 weddings!...if all else fails, you can borrow it

MrsBadger · 19/03/2007 17:02

...and I am fussy re colours and want something on the brown / green spectrum and def not black

thanks for the offer though - I know I'm picky which is why I am looking 4 months before I need it...

skirmish · 19/03/2007 17:03

well, i'll keep my eyes peeled...though you are the style guru so if anyone can find it!

NotQuiteCockney · 19/03/2007 17:06

Ebay, or here, are good options. I had two formal maternity dresses (wedding, and associated brunch) and unloaded them here (along with a bunch of other mat wear) for £25 or something.

(The other was lovely, empire line, knee-length, and a sort of blurry mixed green and purple colour that sounds horrific but was really nice.)
