Summer chinos for the large of bum and thigh?

minipie · 16/05/2017 11:40

I have a smallish waist, but short legs with ample bottom and thighs. Most trousers I try on are gappy at the waist though less so since I had DC and much too tight over the thighs. This is especially unflattering in chinos given the pale colours and lack of stretch.

I am desperate for some summer trousers though. Has anyone found any that might work for my shape recently? Don't mind spending a bit if they are good...

I'll report back! But they do seem to have very good reviews as well.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 23/05/2017 13:00

minipie I kept meaning to come back and say I have the joules Ines too in both colours. They're currently too tight on my wish but I'm hoping to lose some weight by summer! What are you wearing on your feet with them?!

minipie · 23/05/2017 13:08

Yes it's the Hepburn chinos. They definitely had them in khaki in the shop so if you really want khaki it may be worth calling branches? (SW11 branch was the one I went to). I am ordering the pink as we speak.

They do look a little erm tighter on me than on the model online. But not in a bad way. I think.

On my feet... errrr ballet flats/flip flops ... haven't thought really!

Henry good point, I do have some fat face linen trousers from a few years ago that fit fairly well, though they get quite bagged out. I will add fat face to the list.

You can't have that ample bottom and thighs if you fit a size 8?!

What heels would you wear with chinos ? I've never seen them worn with heels ? I always wear pumps or flip flops .

minipie · 23/05/2017 18:34

Burning the Boden lightweight boat neck t shirt is good. Sadly the crew neck is not. For cheaper, H&M has a few good cotton t shirts, you have to filter through a lot though. I live in t shirts so no idea about other sorts of tops sorry!

Windy I'm quite slim but have relatively large bum and thighs for my size iyswim. Trousers mostly seem to be cut for people with the opposite, broad middle and slim legs. (and so do tops).

Wedges would be ok with chinos I reckon

I hadn't thought of wearing ballet pumps with chinos, would they look ok dyou think?

EleanorRigbysNeice · 24/05/2017 11:35

I bought a pair in Dorothy Perkins at the weekend. Haven't shopped there in 20 yrs! However, they fit fairly well and I am a true 🍐 They had in all colours so I chose a dark sand pair (as I'd look frightening in pink/peach or white. Also tried on (in the same shop) some Principles and and Whistles. Principles pretty OK too.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 24/05/2017 11:36

I found the Boden material a bit heavy/lack of stretch (for me).

minipie · 24/05/2017 12:16

Tried some in White Company ("clean chino") the cut was not terrible, but the material was too thin and showed all my lumps. Pale colour whilst pretty didn't help with that! Bit of waist gappage too.

sowhat I think they look fine - I know ballet pumps are not cool but then nor are chinos really so it matches Grin I gave up being cool a while ago anyway

Ooh Eleanor I forgot Dorothy Perkins. They always used to be quite good for pear shapes. How's the fabric? Thick enough?

Yes, and with some "give" but so far, not baggy. I look shocking in any trousers and mostly live in skirts and opaques but, I HAVE to give in, at this time of year!

Bit late to the thread, I have the same problem and was going to recommend esprit chinos. However, last week I discovered a game changer- I'd bought some boyfriend jeans having sent about 10 pairs back for fitting like skinnes on the thighs and a sack around my waist. They were a pretty good fit when I tried them on but lo and behold, within a couple of hours of wearing it was obvious they were too big on the waist. Since I couldn't send them back I took them to my local alterations shop and she said they're a pain to take in and you never get a very good shape but the best thing for a baggy waistband is to put elastic in it. I was sceptical but they weren't really wearable anyway so I thought it was worth a shot. IT IS BRILLIANT. You can't tell they're elasticated when they're on, the baggy bit is neat in my back and they don't fall down. And it cost £7.50. Genius! (Jeansius?!)

woollyminded · 24/05/2017 21:16

I have limited sewing skills but can adapt my big-gape (waves to the sisters in the round bums and generous thighs club) by inserting 3cm elastic to the back of the waistband. Did it last week after I got a pair of men's chinos out of Tesco to cut into shorts.

Tay Bert is right, looks great and comfy too. I can dig out the instructions if anyone's interested.

mirpuppet · 24/05/2017 22:26

Yes instructions on elastic would be greatly appreciated.

Just arrived at this thread to discover that, Woolly you are a star!!

I do sew from time to time, and spend every day - as an hourglass figure- pulling in my trousers with a lumpy belt.

I'm even doing something similar to a pair of Lycra leggings that won't stay up I'm my dance class, but never thought to apply it to my proper trousers.

I'm off to buy some more elastic.

woollyminded · 25/05/2017 08:16

Good luck! I hope you find it as successful as I do. I know what you mean about the uncomfortable belts and constant hoiking.
