I'm a rectangle, same size both top and bottom, I'm also petite. Cannot dress myself at all, can anyone advise what I can wear and not look like a sack of spuds.

Height, size, looks that you admire/like?

Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 20:11

I would not go for things that accentuate your waist (or lack thereof), rather things that are lengthening - so layering a long drapey tunic over skinny jeans with a cropped jacket on top to create texture and interest and the illusion of a waist. Leg lengthening ankle boots or wedges if you do heels.

Do you have nice arms/shoulders/collarbone? A lot of rectangles do. If so draw attention to these areas with interesting necklines, short or no sleeves (weather permitting). I would be tempted to stick with a fairly simple colour palette to start with and add pattern and colour with accessories.

Although this stands for everyone not just your shape, I would try and find one pair of jeans that you love everything about and stick with them. Levi's do lots of good styles for rectangles.

FlourishandBlotts · 02/05/2017 20:27

Bit more info I'm 5ft 1 and size 8/10 on top with a 32B bust. I have no collar bones :( I find it really hard with skinny jeans, I can't get my leg length right at all.

I'd also like a neutral colours. I'm quite dark haired but fair freckled skin.

Skinny jeans - just roll them up or scrunch them up if you struggle with leg length
Leggings in a good black thick material, no see through ones!
Long tops - don't have to be tunic style, you can get long tshirts and blouses, Asda have some nice ones at the moment if you're on a tight budget

UppityHumpty · 02/05/2017 20:31

Tunic style mini dresses. A line dresses. Clever layering to give you a waist.

Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 21:19

Just a note but it's unlikely you are 32B if size 8/10 and 5'1". I'm a 30G and am size 12, 5'10"!!! If you get the bra right everything will look nicer. Try a back size down/cup size up for starters. Agree on nice shirts and skinnies or leggings that sounds good! Might be worth starting a petite skinnies thread as I bet someone on here has found perfect length skinnies...

Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 21:31

Hush is expensive but has lots of things that would suit rectangles and comes up extremely short IME. You could use for styling ideas and then recreate on high street... Eg this dress or this one (I bet h&m do dupes of those

FlourishandBlotts · 02/05/2017 21:35

I'll have to go get measured, does 32B really sound big? I struggle to find nice bras in that size in the first place. Will have a look at all the suggestions. I find it such a chore to try and work out what to wear so I'm appreciative of all your help.

OP posts:
Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 21:38

Yep it's a pain and I think us larger ladies have more of an incentive vecsuse having an ill fitting bra is so uncomfortable. A question, can you fit you hand under your strap easily at the back? If so it's probably too loose and the overall effect will be a bit - droopy! As a rectangle having your boobs in the right place makes all the difference!

UppityHumpty · 02/05/2017 21:38

I think you're probably smaller than 32B. I'm a 32EE and can wear a size 10.

FlourishandBlotts · 02/05/2017 21:50

Yes I can, now I'm looking, a 32B is maybe too big, a bit gapy at the top. It's also annoying that one breast is slightly bigger than the other Grin I quite like the first hush dress, been looking on h&m. Find all these dress and Jean combos quite bizzare..

It sounds like the style doesn't work too well for you either- perhaps a plunge or something that 'lifts and scoops' again I am no expert but there are people on here who are...

FlourishandBlotts · 02/05/2017 22:30

It's just an asda basic t shirt bra. But I'm going to look into getting measured properly, not at M&S.

Could I go for anything high waisted or would that just cut me in half? I have an a line skirt that I wear a t shirt tucked into, is that the same, is it wrong with my shortness?

OP posts:
Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 22:43

I think high waisted with tucked in tops is ok if you tuck and pull giving the illusion of a smaller waist. I think a line may not be the best but would defer to other petite commenters on that. Generally I think fitted/ruched or flowy would work better

Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 22:43

Tuck in pull out a bit I mean

Swimminguphill · 02/05/2017 22:44

But also I firmly believe if you like it, wear it because life is too short!

FlourishandBlotts · 03/05/2017 08:26

I do understand your point that life is indeed too short :) I just want to look a bit more put together and put a bit more effort into what I wear :)

Skinny jeans that are cropped on other people are often the right length for petites, try Topshop for petite range too. Or just cut them off, the raw hem look is in!

FlourishandBlotts · 03/05/2017 11:47

Haha knowing me if I was to cut them they'd end up being lopsided. Topshop have lots of different style jeans, which ones are the best?
I went and got a bra fitting today, really pleased with it and currently looking at bras!

Swimminguphill · 03/05/2017 14:11

Great job!

BagelGoesWalking · 03/05/2017 14:46

Where did you get the bra fitting done? Thanks to MN I've gone from a 36B to a 34D/DD and should probably be in a 32 (I'd got so used to a loose bra that 32 seemed v tight).

Search MN for the recent bra intervention threads and measure! Makes a huge difference.

FlourishandBlotts · 03/05/2017 15:01

I got it done at Mish :)

I would think about a shortish structured blazer that will give you a waist/shape, like this www.marksandspencer.com/grosgrain-trim-single-button-blazer/p/p22490952?image=SD_01_T59_1520J_F0_X_EC_90&color=NAVY&prevPage=srp&pdpredirect
Blazers go with everything from jeans to dresses and make all sorts of dress-down outfits looked pulled together IMO.
A-lined skirts will create an in-out silhouette too.
Knee-length shirtdresses?
There's lots of rectangle inspiration on Pinterest too.

FlourishandBlotts · 04/05/2017 07:03

Hmmmm I've always worn dresses/skirts above the knee because i think anything longer would make me look shorter? I've been having a look on Pinterest, some good inspiration :)
