Best lifestyle choices to look youthful?

sleepysusie · 02/05/2017 15:39

Inspired by another thread where a woman said her friend never drank and was child free and looked 25 at 40 I am wondering what the best lifestyle is to stay looking young.

I do drink (too much) and I have 2 kids and at 40 I defiantly feel booze and being a mum with all the stress and lack of sleep have aged me the most although I wouldn't change it.

What do you think are the most aging or youth boosting lifestyle choices smoking or not, having kids or not, stress, water intake, diet, exercise etc what makes the most difference besides skin care?

I'm 52 and look a lot younger, mainly through not sunbathing and using sunscreen.I've smoked for years but it hasn't really affected me. However I've also not had kids which I think helps too!

BathroomOnTheBroom · 02/05/2017 15:44

Smoking and not using sun cream I reckon. I'm not perfect, I don't wear suncream every day but I do use a moisturiser with SPf and am careful with shade/suncream when it's hot/am on hols.

Stress effects and lack of sleep/exercise or too much booze I reckon are more reversable.

KoalaDownUnder · 02/05/2017 15:44

Sunscreen. Lashings of.

Maintaining a healthy weight by eating a varied diet of fresh, unprocessed food.

An active lifestyle.

I reckon they're the top three.

Wear sunscreen, don't smoke, drink plenty of water, and wear sunglasses all year round if it is even vaguely bright outside (squinting causes terrible wrinkles!). I do all these and people often think I am 5-10 years younger than I am.

ScarlettFreestone · 02/05/2017 15:51

Get lots of sleep. Drink lots of water. Use sunscreen.

Therealslimshady1 · 02/05/2017 15:52

The most ageing thing is... living

So if you avoid heartbreak, stress, having kids, booze, parties and sunlight you can look younger ;)

Is it worth it?

wickedfairy · 02/05/2017 15:54

I'm sure I'd look better if I drank less and didn't get so stressed with 3DC's!! Have just had surgery😆, so chilling for a bit before I get back to exercising a little.

Generally taking care of yourself, I think works. Good diet, low booze, plenty of water and good skincare.

wickedfairy · 02/05/2017 15:56

Oh yes - I forgot the sunscreen!! Very important, Elsie silly if you see pale skinned and susceptible to burning like me!

buggerthebotox · 02/05/2017 15:57

I think having kids is ageing. Your body isn't the same afterwards imho.

Of the people whom I know who are older, the ones who seem most youthful are those who are slim. I include myself in that groupWink.

The most youthful friend I have is childless AND slim. She's 70, with the body (and attitude) of a girl.

Smoking/stress/self neglect all play a part but the effects are not obvious til later in life imho.

I'm always sad when I see young people who are very overweight; they are storing up problems for the future if they are not very careful.

Thefabulousfeminist · 02/05/2017 15:58

Not smoking - fags definitely age people
Lots of sleep
Not much stress
Not much booze, ditto sugar
Eating healthily
Being happy

HerRoyalNotness · 02/05/2017 15:58

Increase water intake
Cut out sugar all together
Reduce meat and processed foods

I should take my own advice

Nettletheelf · 02/05/2017 16:00

Sunscreen and getting enough sleep. I never believed the latter until I started a really full on job and started looking older after six months of burning the candle at both ends.

I'm not giving up boozing and sugar for anything, though.

MyBeautifulSquid · 02/05/2017 16:06

I would rather have my kids and enjoy a drink often occasionally and risk maybe look a bit haggard tbh

I am told I look younger than my age though and I have 3 dc. I have used sunscreen since my teens (religiously since mid 20s) don't smoke and drink a lot of water. I do pilates as well I think that helps.

KatherinaMinola · 02/05/2017 16:19

I think it's not too difficult to look 25 (at first glance) at 40. The bugger is once the menopause hits - then everything goes to hell in a handcart.

But yes:

Don't have dc
Don't smoke
Don't drink, or drink very little
Go to bed early, sleep 8-9 hours
Don't work long hours or have a stressful job
Use sunscreen
Eat lots of tomatoes! And fruit/veg in general
Drink water
Don't drink too much coffee (terrible on the teeth and skin)

Niminy · 02/05/2017 16:20

Be rich. It really does help. And you actually live longer too.

piddleypower · 02/05/2017 16:43

Sorry to say it but I think being overweight probably does make you look older. Certainly less stylish. I have been trying desperately hard to shift two stone before I hit the menopause and am stuck with it!

retainertrainer · 02/05/2017 17:30

Oh I don't know,I think so much of it's down to genetics.

I'm in my 30's and I look it. I don't drink any alcohol,I only drink water,I've never smoked,I always wear spf,I don't eat refined sugar,I maintain a healthy weight,I've only got 1 child.

Non of it's working miracles for me!

Botanicbaby · 02/05/2017 21:03

I really think it's genetics that determine how well you age.

Lots of sleep helps, healthy diet & exercise too.

I find plumper people look younger though (in general, not always) and some people just dress frumpily no matter their age.

People I know who tend to look older than they are are very often likely to be smokers, Sun worshippers, always on sunny holidays and those on faddy diets such as the Dukan where they cut carbs and lose loads quickly but makes them look haggard and unhealthy, in my mind anyway.

ItsTheGenes · 02/05/2017 21:18

I think it's mainly to do with genes. Will find photo to post....

Apparently I look younger than I am. I'm 38. It tends to come up when I say I have a 12 year old DC and people start looking confused, so I guess they think I am 20s or something.

I don't smoke (but did for a number of years)
I don't drink, never really have, used to a bit at uni but never liked it and haven't touched alcohol now in many years
I hate the sun so naturally avoid it!
Always wear sunglasses as hate the glare
Love skincare, still use the same products I have used since age 18 (Lush Angels on Bare Skin and Ultrabland)
Love my "good fats" - extra virgin olive oil on pretty much everything, nuts, nut oils, coconut oil etc.
I drink water because I like it, always have since I was a kid

WaxingGibbous · 02/05/2017 22:07

100% with the sunglasses. I learnt that too late and have a few wrinkles from squinting for years. Despite that I'm often told I look younger than I am. I'm slim with A cup boobs though so that may have something to do with the illusion.

I would say lots of water, no booze and a good diet. Sleep really important too, when my dc were young non-sleepers I looked awful.

Not sure if it is counted as lifestyle but taking care of your teeth in various ways.

PollyPerky · 02/05/2017 22:33

The drink lots of water is a myth.
As long as you drink enough fluids and that's not booze, it's fine.

  • avoid sugar (in foods and drinks)
-avoid the sun on your face and use spf 50 all year round
  • do not smoke- biggest ager of all
  • eat loads of veg, fruit, nuts, good fats, oils, not too much red or processed meat
  • exercise
-sunglasses all year round if sunny
  • have happy relationships
  • drink booze only now and then or not at all
StaringAndSquinting · 02/05/2017 23:40

Water
Exercise (cardio and weight training)
Yoga
Low sugar diet
Happiness
Sleep

Chickydoo · 03/05/2017 06:23

I am 50
I sunbathe, I drink alcohol (a few days a week) I drink coffee, I have 4 children, I eat what I fancy and stay up late.
Last week someone told me I look 10 years younger 😁
Secret is I smile (good teeth) I am happy and enjoy life. I exercise every day. My BMI is 19, I wear clothes that look reasonably decent.
I love being 50! Mainly because I can be happy in my skin & don't really care what others think.
