Best lifestyle choices to look youthful?

Inspired by another thread where a woman said her friend never drank and was child free and looked 25 at 40 I am wondering what the best lifestyle is to stay looking young.

I do drink (too much) and I have 2 kids and at 40 I defiantly feel booze and being a mum with all the stress and lack of sleep have aged me the most although I wouldn't change it.

What do you think are the most aging or youth boosting lifestyle choices smoking or not, having kids or not, stress, water intake, diet, exercise etc what makes the most difference besides skin care?

jane I agree and I think the issue is that telling people they look younger is almost on a par with talking about the weather- it's just what you do to be polite.

' I've got two children who are 12 and 16'

Correct response: ' no!! You don't look old enough'

Plus if anyone asks me how old I think they are I always take off at least 5 years to be on the safe side, even if I know how old they are'

Cantsee - agree with your post!

Floisme - pop onto my thread where I'm, sort of, celebrating older women who look their age!

Floisme · 05/05/2017 13:57

GreatAunt I will but first I've got to get some work done Grin

Exactly Flo. We're obsessed with youth, beauty, perfect bodies....the pressures are enormous. I've seen photos of my Nan when she was 38+ and she looked old. She worked hard, there was little leisure time, no makeup, rarely went to the hairdressers. She always had beautiful skin because lying about in the sun was not done (she was born in the 19th century!). Now, we're supposed to look amazing. All the time. If you don't do makeup or go out (as I often do) in your scruff, you've "let yourself go".

Honey quite right Smile

I am very Hmm at stylists who don't seem able to give you a cut/colour that flatters. I am still bitter about the bleached, side-parting crop the stylist at Vidal Sassoon inflicted on me...it might have been a technically superb cut, but it made me look like one of the Hitler Youth...

Destinysdaughter · 07/05/2017 17:45

Oh dear, Hitler youth isn't a good look at any age! ( although Emma Willis seems to pull it off quite well, but then she's so beautiful, she could pull off anything!)

I've always worn makeup which I genuinely believe has offered a level of protection to my skin!

I have cleansed and moisturised and used SPF since I was a student, religiously.
Stayed a stable weight (BMI 21).
Eaten lots of veg and fruit.
Exercised moderately but regularly.
Never smoked.
Hardly drunk alcohol.
Drunk mostly water and green tea.
Eaten nuts, avocado, oily fish regularly.
Been a good sleeper.

I look exactly my age :)

Maybe I'll blossom in my 60s.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 10/05/2017 11:22

Hippo... it's like when people say "my grandad smoked 60 a day, he was as fit as a dlea and died at 95". Sometimes, it just IS as it IS. Im noticing changes which really i shouldnt have having never smoked and due to allergies, have stayed out of the sun. It's shite.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 10/05/2017 11:28

Ma Grin. That's a good point. To my credit I have (or had) good hair. Last week I went to have a few highlights which I've done for several years and showed the Colour Specialist 3 pics of what I like (I was new to the salon) and a couple of what I absolutely didn't want, just so she was absolutely clear. I had to go back yesterday as I was ginger and my hair was like staw. The manager took one look and gave me a full refund, Redken products to use over the next month and an appointment with HER to sort it out. What a total fuck-up. 😡 This is my HEAD!! On full display to the world, 24/7

Best lifestyle choices for looking youthful?

  1. Laugh

  2. Laugh some more

  3. Smoke as many fags as you can get in your gob

  4. Whilst cackling

  5. Then drink. Tons.

Mominatrix · 20/05/2017 06:28

I definitely look much younger than my age and the principal reason is....genetics. My mum at 70 is still without deep lines whilst my mother-in-law at the same age looked like a prune. Other reasons why people are always more than 15 years off in guessing my age:

  • good skin: I have never been a sun worshipper, never smoked, always had a skin routine, put a priority on sleep, drunk plenty of water, and have a good diet full of fruit and veg and low on processed food.
  • physically fit: exercise has always been a priority so I am toned and slim.
  • dress well in non-frumpy clothing
  • good hair: again another genetic thing. My hair is very thick (too thick!) and shiny

I need to see the hitler youth haircut.
I choaked on my breakfast because of that!
