Dressing for TV - who gets it right?

BeautyFromTheBlock · 02/05/2017 12:00

So I've got a small part on camera - think Time Team stuff, and as a lumpy, 40 something I'm struggling. Nothing fits, the shop mirrors are cruel, etc. etc.

So, who gets it right, who always looks good. At the moment I'm struggling to find inspiration.

I was just thinking the other day how Fiona Bruce always looks good, always smart and professional but never overdressed imo. Good luck with the tv piece!

DatsunCogs · 02/05/2017 12:59

But Fiona Bruce wears awful trainers! Go for a block colour, no stripes/patterns, that's usually a good option. Something that fits well and you won't have to keep fiddling with.

BeautyFromTheBlock · 02/05/2017 13:19

I've Google images various names - your right block colours work. Nothing too fussy.

Rachel de Thame, the gardener looks good. The men all seem to have a uniform going on, Kevin McCloud is formal jacket, open shirt.

Having looked through Sarah Beeny's Google pics, a jacket is a must, she looks frozen in those jersey tops.

Fiona Bruce has a good figure and looks very tall and elegant in everything! She's 53!!! I never looked that good at 30.

How about the panel on Loose Women as inspiration? I like how Jane More and JSP dress. They seem to do a block colour top, minimal accessories.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/05/2017 14:23

Lorraine Kelly and Holly Willoughby always look lovely.

NevermetaGilesIlike · 02/05/2017 15:43

Prof Alice Roberts, Alys Fowler and Lucy Worsley get my vote.

NevermetaGilesIlike · 02/05/2017 15:46

Also Dr Janina Ramirez if you favour a more gothy vibe

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/05/2017 15:47

If the person is interesting (Carol Klein, Christine Walkden, Mary Beard) I honestly don't take much notice of what they are wearing. I'm sure you'll be great OP.

NevermetaGilesIlike · 02/05/2017 15:50

Ooooh! I was just coming back to say Mary Beard. She likes Toast stuff apparently 🙂

I think she has great style.

ThatsNotMyMummy · 02/05/2017 15:51

Oh exciting!! I'll put my pennies worth in, but i look like I've been dragged through a hedge most days.

What are you doing? Roughly
As in, stood in a muddy field or in a studio?
Muddy field, dark skinny jeans, wellies / good mucker type boots and a white / pale shirt.
Studio pencil skirt heels and shirt/ nice top

BeautyFromTheBlock · 02/05/2017 17:30

I like loads of those presenters and yet a quick google reveals that they are always 100% successful in their fashion choices but I still like them because I'm interested in greek life, gardening, etc. That is there job and I'm being slightly stupid worrying about this.

I will be outside, hands on practical stuff and a bit of being interviewed. Need to be prepared to for sun and full on rain!

Sally Nugent looks great. Simple colours and shapes. Wouldn't maybe work outside though.

Jeans and a jacket or coat if it's bad weather? Keep it simple?

Also Sophie Raworth. She does Chelsea so might be worth a google.

Fiona Bruce had to wear trainers as she had hurt her foot.

BeautyFromTheBlock · 02/05/2017 18:39

Sorry I was multi tasking on the last post.

That was supposed to be not always 100% successful...

Right I'm googling all those names tonight in an attempt to narrow down what 'works'. Then I can get on and concentrate on my expert area!

Gawd not Sarah Beeny. I love her but she has zero style.

Go for a top with a bit of thickness to it so it sits on you rather than clings and not too low a neckline. Add necklace and jacket to liven up. Good, well fitting and invisible bra essential.

SemiNormal · 02/05/2017 18:50

I like Andrea Mcleans style. She always looks lovely. Emma Willis also looks drop dead gorgeous. More outdoorsy and casual I would say Ellie Harrison from Countryfile.

ThatsNotMyMummy · 02/05/2017 18:50

Joule have got some beautiful shirts in. I know the general consensus was to stay away from pattern, but some of these floral ones are lovely

Theres relaxed or smarter depending what look your going for. The smarter ones you could get a nice v neck jumper to go over the top like the crew ones. Dark jeans and whatever footwear is suitable to what your doing

carrie74 · 02/05/2017 18:52

If outdoorsy look at Julia Bradbury and Kate Humble?

ThatsNotMyMummy · 02/05/2017 18:55

Or black top and mums net scarf Wink

Teardropexplodes · 02/05/2017 18:59

Kirsty Alsop wears a coat and boots well. For more outdoorsy, Helen Skelton?
I always think Susannah Reid is very stylish too.

CurlsLDN · 02/05/2017 18:59

Hello! As part of my job I have prepped people for tv appearances many times.
Rules of thumb are no small/busy patterns and definitely no stripes (tight stripes will strobe on camera)
Nigella is good inspiration - plain colours that suit her colouring, simple shapes that slim her figure.

Jackets can look great if you keep to simple lines and block colours (e.g. Mel and sue!)

Bear in mind if there will be any strong colour themes behind you - e.g. A red carpet, or if the show has strong backdrops like on bargain hunt. Get a colour that compliments but is not the same!

Generally steer clear of anything too fussy or too trendy, including in your jewellery. Of course some tv personalities break all these 'rules' and look AMAZING but they/their stylists are very experienced and confident on what will suit that particular person.

Take multiple options, on the day the directors will help you narrow down the best choice as they have the eye for what will look best in context

Teardropexplodes · 02/05/2017 19:01

This is a nice look, I think...

Joules always do a jersey blazer, which I found flattering as a roundy, well upholstered person.

So colour block trousers & jacket, some kind of top that skims the collar bone, delicate accessories?

ThatsNotMyMummy · 02/05/2017 19:03

Yes joules jackets are very very flattering

MrsChopper · 02/05/2017 19:06

The presenters on Countryfile always wear practical stuff but look alright I find. How exciting for you, OP Smile
