Face care at 50 to Botox or not to botox that is the question....

Hello girls
What to do?? Having looked pretty good on minimum input all these years I am now finding myself more than a little fed up with bloody annoying lines on my face. The ones from my nose to my mouth are the worst, very aging (having just seen some awful photos recently taken - very depressing). Also, I spend a lot of time working outside which I love, but feel I am now looking less sun-kissed and more weather beaten. I have no idea where to start when faced with a menu of choices at the vanity parlour, I'm open minded to anything right up to a full sandpaper and face lift but would love some advice from those of a similar age who have already tried these things (ps I'll post on Gransnet as well to capture the right age group Wink TIA

I'd go for a consultation somewhere OP to see what they recommend for you. My friend is a skin specialist and she does programmes with clients where they gradually look at all different areas and treatments. Some of the before and after pictures are amazing. Eyebrows, lips, botox and HiFu seem to make the most difference to people's faces.

I lost about 1 and half stone post divorce aged 46, great except that my skin hung off me like an elephant, the veins showed up more on my legs and the lines showed up more on my face. Its not fair!!!!

piddleypower · 26/04/2017 12:10

I didn't have any sort of skin care regime until I was 47. For the last three years I have been using one with help from the threads on here and it has made a massive difference, I am glowing! Plus I had microdermabrasion which made a massive difference and am now having micro needling which has really firmed my face up. Maybe botox isn't what you need - might help the wrinkles but no good if you still have a dull and dry face. Maybe give that a go first. Depends what you are after and what your problem areas are.

ArtemisiaGentilleschi · 26/04/2017 12:53

Can I ask the million dollar (hopefully not!) question...how much are you paying for fillers? Am contemplating marionette lines...

Newtssuitcase · 26/04/2017 17:44

I had my lips filled today. £150. I now have a top lip!

ginorwine · 26/04/2017 22:05

I've had them for 8oo - cheeks lifted which in turn dealt with nose to mouth line s - this lasted 2 years
Have just had a fluid facelift which involved small amounts of fillers all over and was v v expensive but has taken poss ten years off me and will last 18 months to 2 years
Some clinics who are also training clinics offer discounted treatments if you model - I'm thinking of doing that next time ....

ginorwine · 26/04/2017 22:07

What is hi fu
I think it's amazing to get lips done for£ 150 !!!!!

RiseandGrind · 26/04/2017 22:35

The problem with Botox is that everyone reacts differently and you dont know how you'll look until a couple of weeks later and then youre stuck with it for months if you dont like it. Ive had it several times for forehead and crows feet at very reputable places but it really dies depend on so much (facial architecture, expresiveness, skill of practitioner etc.) as to how it turns out.

Each time Ive had crows feet done, it's made me unable to smile; I snarl instead. My face is very expressive though. Each Dr said they'd never seen tgat outcome before. Ive had some dodgy Botox in my forehead too; the spock eyebrows, the glass-like forehead and the heavy brow.

Worst of all with crows feet though is i get fat/muscle atrophy around my eyes through lack of use so be careful. If you do something there are consequences, maybe not immediately but down the line. My first Botix at age 34 was beautiful, at 48, not at all nice.

Have a look at the Real Self website/app for some sobering reviews on Botox treatment.

owenjonesismyhero · 26/04/2017 23:08

I was thinking this today. Hate looking like I've got a cob on. I'm derma rolling, followed by a serum and got a face massager. Problem is time / remembering to do them all!

Newtssuitcase · 27/04/2017 07:05

HiFu is another name for Ultherapy. Gets rid of the jowls. Its a non surgical skin tightening method. I know two friends who have had it and look great. I'm a bit of a wimp though and have heard it hurts a bit.

My lips are swollen today and so I look odd. Fingers crossed they go down soon. Supposed to be 48 hours ish. Dh keeps staring at me and saying that I look the same but different.

I only went in for a botox top up!

Truckingalong · 27/04/2017 07:13

Hifu has got some really awful feedback. I'll try most things and I wouldn't go near it. Don't be tempted until you read more about it.

diodati · 27/04/2017 07:22

I'm 54 & am starting to think my age is showing too much. Wrinkles under eyes, thinning lips, jawline drooping a bit. My mum has had 2 facelifts in her late 50s / early 60s (I didn't find this out until recently) & I'd like to do the same. Botox scares me but surgery doesn't. Anyone had a facelift?

Ineedagoodusername · 27/04/2017 08:02

Interested in this. I have 2 deep vertical lines between my eyebrows. How do I start finding somewhere reputable?

Delatron · 27/04/2017 09:30

That's what I'm worried about with Botox RiseandGrind, that other muscles compensate for the frozen ones and I get new wrinkles that I never had before. The rest of my face is ok, apart from 11's. Fen the fir head down I'm happy and I don't want to do something that changes that.
I've talked myself out of Botox again! Off to get a fringe..
I too think a facelift at 50 might be the answer rather than all the injectables...

Delatron · 27/04/2017 09:31

From the forehead down (fat fingers)

OldnKnackered · 27/04/2017 09:45

Ineedagood - research the doctor who will be giving you the treatment, not just the clinic. How qualified are they? How long have they been doing it? What are they qualified in? What products do they use? (There are a number of different brands/types of filler and muscle relaxant, botox is a brand, different types of fillers are used in different areas and some are cheaper than others. There are some unscrupulous practicioners out there who will maybe use filler meant for the body on the face because it's cheaper, which obv will not give the desired effect). Can you see/speak to some previous clients. I've been having botox for about a year and have only ever had good results but the two people I've been to are both highly qualified (one a surgeon and one a dermatologist), have been doing my chosen treatment for years and I'd seen their previous work. Both take the 'less is more' approach.
Botox cannot be reversed you just have to wait for it to metabolise naturally which usually takes about 3/4 months when you first start getting it done. Fillers can be reversed if you're not happy with the result.

Truckingalong · 27/04/2017 11:09

I've been having Botox for my 11s for about 13 years now. It's so routine for doctors. The only thing that's ever gone wrong for me is a bit of spocking, which is easily corrected and a bit too much put in, which made my forehead feel tight but that's it. My current doctor is the best I've ever used. He flies all over the world to practice and teach and is lovely too. He has clinics all over uk and you can follow them on Instagram and Facebook to see their work. He is streets ahead of the 2 main recommended doctors in cheshire.

LightYears · 27/04/2017 11:49

Jessica Tandy. I don't think she had any work done and look how beautiful she is.

Face care at 50 to Botox or not to botox that is the question....
AgathaF · 27/04/2017 12:23

LightYears some of feel better with a little help though.

Chippednailvarnishing · 27/04/2017 13:13

If I looked like Jessica Tandy does at her age I would be pleased. However I'm looking like her at 40!

LightYears · 27/04/2017 14:23

some of feel better with a little help though. You won't when it all starts to melt.

MissMuppets · 27/04/2017 14:33

I don't know who Jessica Tandy is, but she looks old. She has good bone structure but that's all I can say. She looks about the same age as my mum and her friends who are mid-80s and early 90s.

squoosh · 27/04/2017 14:36

Jessica Tandy died about 20 years ago. But she did look good up until the end!

MissMuppets · 27/04/2017 14:38

God bless her then, but in that photo she is terribly lined and looks pretty old.

There is nothing wrong with a tweak to your face. If you have your hair coloured, paint your nails and so on, what's a bit of filler or Botox?
