Very sad to read about this.

I agree with that even though I've been critical, and I hope something can still be pulled out of the fire. A company that looks after its staff ..... now there's a thought. I just hope Philip Green doesn't end up buying them Shock

rubybleu · 15/04/2017 15:47

I work in funds management in a front office role, don't wear suits (don't own one) & without blowing my own trumpet, am doing very well compared to my male peers.

Best mate does a similar role at a different house & is literally storming up the career ladder in very similar attire. I'm foreign and do generally think that British women dress far too casually in the office - short hems, ditsy florals and tatty flat pumps annoy me - but suits are so 2002.

I wear some kind of jacket if I'm client facing to match the sea of ties, but would never dream of wearing a matching suit - it looks very dowdy 99% of the time.

Anyway, Jaeger was very nice but didn't invest enough into their marketing. I never open their emails as they're so boring (ditto Reiss). I wear a lot of Hobbs so presumably I'm their target market.

PaperdollCartoon · 15/04/2017 18:39

Just to chime in - I'm in my twenties and work in professional services, none of the senior women wear suits. Lots of Hobbs, Whistles, Phase Eight dresses. Sometimes with a suit jacket. I'm looking at a new job where I'd be more client facing, when pondering new workwear I'll need it hasn't included any suits. Definitely smart but with more personality than a suit.

Want2bSupermum · 15/04/2017 19:18

ruby Yes I wear dresses with a jacket. Not matching. Jaeger was great because you could get 4-5 dresses that could be worn on their own, with a cardigan or a jacket.

My Hobbs suits are all dresses which have a different color dress with a jacket. So my navy suit is actually a tweed navy and white dress with a navy jacket. The same navy jacket is also worn with a cream dress with navy piping as well as a jeans and a silk bow tie top from jigsaw for evening events that I have to accompany DH. The other women are housewives and generally speaking wear slouchy top with skinnies and a pair of flats because they are European. The American women dress really well, housewives or otherwise.

Bejazzled · 15/04/2017 20:08

Some lovely pieces on their website...do you think it's safe to order still?

FreeButtonBee · 15/04/2017 20:17

God I haven't had a suit since I was a trainee solicitor back in what? 2004?

I wear a lot of dresses and tailored trouser with blouses. I never wear a jacket. And neither do many of my female colleagues or client on the business side (in house counsel now). Doesn't appear to have some me any harm as I'm on the promotion track for this year.

I have a beautiful jaeger full dress coat from about 10 years ago which is still in excellent nick; beautifully cut, wrap around style with a belt. But mostly I find the sizing is for giants so it doesn't suit me. The boutique range from a few years ago was v nice.

DH liked their shirts though. Nice heavy weight cotton and good for his role (when, like suits, double cuffed shirts would be way over the top).

JaceLancs · 15/04/2017 21:00

I'm early 50s in senior management and haven't owned a suit for 10+ years however I do still wear jackets mainly with dresses or contrasting trousers
I've had a lot of jaeger over the years and will particularly miss their coats and handbags especially when there's been a sale
DC bought me a grey leather jaeger bag from outlet for my birthday a few weeks ago and 3-4 people within first few days said how much they loved it
DS has to wear a suit on some work occasions and shirt/tie smart trousers every day
We went to jaeger outlet yesterday to stock up on shirts for him, sadly no suits to fit
I ended up with a black cardigan, cream silk blouse and a sweater dress

Zxyzoey31 · 15/04/2017 21:37

Plenty of ladies in the city wear suits. It is not old fashioned to do so and isn't going to stop any time soon.
Personally I always find hobbs a very odd fit (thought it might be good for petite people) and terrible quality trousers.

Catsize · 16/04/2017 11:39

This thread shows why it is so hard to find suits. Until my professional dress code changes, I'll have to keep wearing one. I went to Jaeger on Saturday and bought a suit I already have. I think I'll have to get them made in a few years. 🙁

ExConstance · 16/04/2017 12:05

I had a jaeger suit years ago, lightweight white wool with a pattern like black scribble all over it, very striking. It had a tight pencil skirt and short jacket. Once tried to climb a fence in it and got stuck. Jaeger knitwear ids lovely.

Floisme · 16/04/2017 12:14

This thread has inspired me to dig out my one and only Jaeger buy: a linen shirt dress in deep (not navy blue) from a charity shop. I don't know how much it had been worn prior to my buying it but it still looks as good as new and hangs beautifully. It's proper, heavy linen not that saggy shit they churn out on the high street these days.

I feel bad for criticising them now Sad

Bejazzled · 16/04/2017 14:03

Yes Floisme their linen is particularly good. I didn't realise linen could be like that until I owned a couple of Jaeger dresses.

RedLollipopShoes · 16/04/2017 21:22

I'm early 40s only just and have a few recently acquired Jaeger pieces that I wear for general smart days. Meetings, christenings, ceremonial stuff etc. All fit beautifully and look classic in a good way IMHO. They had become my new wardrobe staple. I'm genuinely gutted.

Fozzleyplum · 17/04/2017 09:03

I am sad to hear of Jaeger's (likely) demise. The clothes are not a good fit for me, as I'm tall, and almost everything they do is too short for me - except for the amazing alpaca "dressing gown" coat I bought a couple of years ago.

DH likes their suits and shirts, and our local outlet has been a great source of formal clothing (eg school suits) for my very tall and thin teenage DS.

It's interesting to read what people wear these days in a corporate environment. I'm a lawyer and for the past 7 years, I've worked as a consultant to a niche practice where the female lawyers don't wear suits; the usual office dress is tailored trousers with a silk shirt/ smart jumper. I dust off my suits on the occasions I go to court or tribunal, but have noticed that even there, some of the female lawyers are quite casually dressed compared with the days, in the 1990s, when I spent every day in court.

Fozzleyplum · 17/04/2017 09:04

Just to add, the time I'm most unsure what too wear is when I go to see a new commercial client. I usually bottle out and wear a suit, but I'm never sure if this is overkill.

ppeatfruit · 17/04/2017 10:23

A company that looks after it's staff I'm not sure it does any more though Floisme.

I was talking about the early 70s Shock It shocks me how long ago it seems.

To derail a little, ref. jackets, does anyone know if the broad padded shoulders are back in ?

Floisme · 17/04/2017 10:35

You're right ppeat I also remember when M&S was known as a really good employer but those days are long gone, although I still think some companies are better than others.

I've seen the odd shoulder pad around recently so I think they might be on the way back - but nothing like the excesses of the 80s.... yet Grin

ppeatfruit · 17/04/2017 13:11

Thanks Floisme I think that John Lewis are better than most atm., which is not saying much any more sadly.

I do remember noting that the padded shoulders were on the way back a couple of years ago but obviously have been dropped or they haven't been picked up by the majority yet. (I've hung on to my 'real thing' just in case!).

OlennasWimple · 17/04/2017 16:24

I'm very sad that Jaegar have gone into administration - I love their stuff, especially their boutique line.

On suits in the workplace, I haven't seen Hillary-style pant suits (or the equivalent with a knee length skirt) for many years, but professional women who are going places are definitely wearing smart, tailored clothes with a jacket

SeaRabbit · 17/04/2017 16:45

I still wear a suit occasionally: I have a classic Margaret Howell navy pinstriped skirt suit that must be 20 years old, but shows no wear, and still looks good, plus a couple of others. Usually it's because I'm seeeing a new client, but sometimes it's just because I fancy wearing a suit.

shinynewusername · 18/04/2017 08:02

Not surprised about Jaegar. I'm in my mid 40s but 90% of their stuff seemed frumpy to me whereas I remember my (stylish) mother at the same age having some great Jaegar outfits. And the whole ambience of the stores: dark and old-fashioned, as well as the sizing and pricing issues PPS have mentioned, put me off completely.

CycleHire · 23/04/2017 09:08

Sad too. I didn't realise. I've bought quite a few Jaeger dresses in recent years, but as mentioned I only buy in the sale so I'm probably part of the problem.

Dontlaugh · 09/05/2017 20:42

Just bumping this as the outlet site seems to have massively reduced their prices, lots of silk, cotton and linen bits. Lots of navy!

squiz81 · 09/05/2017 21:03

I saw loads of Jaeger in TK Maxx last week if you're a fan and want to stock up!
